I read this today regarding the practice squad players

Practice squad players are essentially free agents and are able to be signed to another team's active roster.

can someone fill me in as adding the word "essentially" poses questions....does this mean the team who has the player on their practice squad gets compensation for this player if they are signed to another team's active roster or can they just be signed at any time by a team if they are on the practice squad somewhere?

Practice Squad players may acquired by any team without compensation.

Practice Squad players may acquired by any team without compensation.

This is why teams will never stash good players on the practice squad. Even if (for example) the Browns have no intention of playing Brady Quinn this season, if they tried to put him on the practice squad he'd be signed by another team.
