Preseason Games Thread - Observations and commentary from the FBG Shark Pool (1 Viewer)

Why the heck is Edelman in the game ? Just banged his injured hand.  Remember when Welker tore his ACL in a meaningless week 17 game.
Remember when Gronk broke his arm on an extra point when the Patriots were up by 35 points with 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter?

Context Matters @dwainmcfarland

James Washington playing week four of the preseason... another bad data point. Playing Z for fourth consecutive game (JJSS role). His chances of playing meaningful snaps (at least early in the season) appear low. Despite strong preseason he is a buy-hold candidate

I don't think Vedvick is making the Vikings.
Be pretty embarrassing to trade for him and then cut him 2 weeks later. I'd think they'd at least keep him around as a kickoff specialist. That's not an ideal use of a roster spot, but I'd be shocked if he got cut.

Speaking of Vikings getting cut, Sean Mannion stinks. How in the world is he ahead of Kyle Sloter, when Sloter is better at everything a QB needs to do? Cut Mannion, promote Sloter, and keep Browning on the practice squad.

Also, I really hope Zylstra makes the team. I think he's their best WR after Thielen and Diggs. Haven't really been impressed with Beebe, and I think its a mistake if he's part of the 11 package, as he's a slot only guy, and I wouldn't want to kick Thielen outside, since he's so dominant inside.

Vedvik kills it in Baltimore 4/4 including 53 yarder they trade him for a 5th rounder and it hits midnight and he misses kick after kick.

Atlanta going to be bringing back Matt Bryant soon too

Diontae Johnson is a lot closer to starting than Washington.

Not sure why that would be.  Johnson hasn't played much at all and when he has I haven't seen anything. I think Washington has earned it, been lights out.

I think it is a terrible idea to keep an additional specialist o the roster when there are many quality players that could be kept instead.

You likely are right though though that the trade suggests they should keep him. He hasn't been with the team long enough to evaluate perhaps?

In any normal scenario it would be no question to cut additional specialist for another more useful player. Teams cut 5th round draft picks often enough that the investment shouldn't matter really. You keep the best 53. The only difference here is that most of Vedvicks camp was with another team.

Sloter started. He should be ahead of Mannion I agree. He threw an interception in the game tonight.

I think you make an interesting point about the personnel packages and Adam Theilens effectiveness from the slot.

Its only preseason but I saw something about the Vikings have only used 11 personnel 13% of the time.

Irv Smith has played great as a receiving option from what I have seen and the Vikings have two really good fullbacks right now too. I do not know how much they will be using that package in the regular season, but it is going to be a lot less than they have recently Maybe only 25% so I do not think the Vikings 3rd WR matters much. I think that is Irv Smith who will line up outside plenty enough so Diggs and Thielen can work from the slot,

eta - it is hard to keep a 3rd QB or extra FB when you are using an extra roster spot on a kicker who doesn't have a full job.

Washington is playing the wrong position and almost exclusively with the 2nd team. Diontae will be playing AB old spot......behind garbage Moncrief.

If Diontae hasn't shown you anything this preseason go look at his 2 td catches a couple weeks back. One was called back on a weak ### offensive PI........he's coming though.

What I don't understand is why JuJu would be blocking Washington. Play JuJu in the slot, where he's dominant. They seem to want to use either Eli Rogers or Ryan Switzer and I just don't get it.

Honestly, their 3-WR set should be JuJu, Washington and Johnson by midseason. Not saying it will, but it should be.

I'm not sure Washington can play outside.......but I know Diontae Johnson can.

Not that anyone thought otherwise, but Tyree Jackson is terrible. I feel bad for any of the bubble WRs for Buffalo tonight because they basically weren't even given an opportunity to show anything.

I may have missed it...but why do you like DJ so much?
You can't press him. That's where he's at his best when you try to press him. He's going to be the Steelers new AB imo. He can win outside. He can win inside. He got hurt at a bad time so it might take a little longer than originally thought but he's going to be starting for the Steelers and a big part of their future. They love him.

There was a nice screen play but other than that not much.

Good punt return. Berchich says that it may have been kicked to the wrong side of the coverage.

Marcus Murphy isn't going to end up a Buffalo Bill, but he's going to end up on someone's roster. He has earned it. He's not a starter, but he's a more than capable backup and guy who can grab 2-4 carries a game and do something with them.

Did you mean inside? Washington plays almost exclusively outside.
Well Steeler WR are asked to learn all the receiver positions but Washington is firmly behind JuJu and Diontae is playing more AB's old role.
