Presidential Debate Thread - Obama vs. Romney (1 Viewer)

So we've watched Romney in 3 debates. In each one he's been the moderate guy I've been hoping for all along. He understands what McCain did not: that the Tea Party- base idiots will vote for him anyway, despite the fact that he takes every opportunity to repudiate their views. I think Romney has a decent chance of winning. And guess what Max Threshold, Double G, Jim11 and Boneyard Dog: if Romney does get elected, he's not going to do anything you guys want. He's a centrist and he can't stand your wacky views.
Not at all concerned that he really is closer to the right wing, and is merely moving to the center merely to win people like you over?
At this point, I think we can all agree Romney is anyone he wants to be at anytime he wants to be it.
And Obama isnt? Right down to using the appropriate accent, depending on which group he's speaking to.
Not everything is a comparison. HTH.
It doesn't help at all. It merely shows that you will call out Romney, but not Obama,
Your logic is poor. It shows no such thing.

Looks like I need to update my Republican debate excuse list:

A) The questions were geared towards Obama Barry.

B) Barry got more time.

C) The moderator cheated.

D) Those questions came out of left field.

E) Actually, Romney won.

F) This debate wasn't as important.

Yes it does. That you can't see that is telling.

What difference does it make...the world is due to end on Dec 21st anyway. Don't even bother voting.

In presidential debate, Obama takes Romney to school

By: Roger Simon

October 22, 2012 11:47 PM EDT

BOCA RATON, Fla. - - At the very beginning of his third and final debate with Barack Obama Monday night, Mitt Romney turned toward the president and said: “Mr. President, it’s good to be with you again.”

Fact check! Ten Pinocchios! Five pairs of pants on fire!

And I would bet that, about 90 minutes later, even Romney would agree that it was not that good to have been on the debate stage with Obama once again.

At age 65, Mitt Romney probably thought he was done with school. But he got schooled by Obama on foreign policy at what will be their last meeting before Election Day.

Romney wasn’t terrible. But he was on the defensive for much of the evening, a fine sheen of sweat popped put on his forehead long before the debate ended, and - - worst of all - - Romney was repeatedly forced to say he agreed with Obama on policy after policy.

This may not have been so bad, but Obama chose a good evening to be good. Having learned his lesson in Denver, having sharpened his skills at the second debate in Hempstead, N.Y., Obama unloaded on Romney in Boca Raton with a prepared theme: “Wrong and reckless.”

“I know you have not been in a position to execute foreign policy,” Obama said snidely to Romney. “But (yours) is wrong and reckless leadership that is all over the map. It is not recipe for American strength or to keep America safe.”

And what could possibly be worse than being wrong and reckless with American lives?

Being like George W. Bush and **** Cheney!

“He’s praised George Bush as a good economic steward and **** Cheney as somebody who shows great wisdom and judgment,” Obama sneered. “And taking us back to those kinds of strategies that got us into this mess is not … going to maintain leadership and take us into the 21st century.”

Romney swatted back, but a little feebly. “Attacking me is not an agenda,” Romney sniffed.

Oh, yeah? Since when? In what country is he running for president?

The subject of the debate, which was very ably moderated by Bob Schieffer, was supposed to be foreign policy. But both candidates managed to pivot to domestic policy time and time again, and for the very good reason that domestic policy is far more likely to decide the election.

And there is another problem with foreign policy, which Romney demonstrated when he twice mentioned Mali.

Mali? Is Romney not aware that in an oft-quoted Roper poll sponsored by the National Geographic Society in 2006, 75 percent of American young people couldn’t find Israel on a map - - which might be understandable considering it’s pretty small - - but also that 50 percent couldn’t find Ohio? Or New York?

And he wants people to know from Mali?

Obama stuck to digestible bites. Regarding Iran and its possible development of nuclear weapons, Obama said: “The clock is ticking. We will not let Iran perpetually engage in negotiations that lead nowhere.”

And: “There’s no reason Americans should die when Afghans are capable of defending their own country.”

But Obama also showed emotion. (Real or not hardly matters. This is politics, after all.) When Romney criticized him for having made “an apology tour, criticizing America” as president and also for having skipped a visit to Israel, Obama pounced.

He pointed out that as a candidate running for president the first time, he had gone to Israel, and, unlike Romney, “I didn’t take donors. I went to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum, to remind myself of the nature of evil and why our bond with Israel will be unbreakable.”

And that may be when the sweat first started glistening on Romney’s forehead.

Even when Romney tried prepared lines that had worked so well in his debate prep sessions, things still went wrong.

Romney was obviously prepared for Obama’s statement that he had killed Osama bin Laden.

“I congratulate [Obama] on taking out Osama bin Laden,” Romney said, “[but] we can’t kill our way out of this mess.”

That was early in the debate. Later in the debate, asked by Schieffer if he would continue Obama’s frequent use of drones to kill terrorists, Romney said, that he would because it was an effective technology. Which pretty much sounds like killing our way out of a mess.

And Obama’s prepared lines had a boom-lowering quality to them. Romney has frequently complained that our Navy has fewer ships now than in our past.

“We also have fewer horses and bayonets,” Obama mocked, pointing out that time moves on and presidents must do more than play giant games of “Battleship.”

Was the evening enough to be, in the now-favorite term of the press, a “game changer”?

Perhaps. Perhaps not. But Schieffer ended the debate by quoting his mother. “Go vote. It makes you feel big and strong.”

Landsburg's comments.

Limited commentary this time, partly because I am no expert on foreign policy so there’s no reason you should care about most of my opinions. On the other hand, the candidates had an exceptionally broad definition of foreign policy, which included trade, deficits, unemployment, education, etc. Commentary also limited by the fact that my attention wandered from time to time. That said, here are my comments, typed in real time, unedited, not carefully thought through, perhaps in some cases ill-advised:0. Romney in red tie, Obama in blue, as in first debate; this was reversed in the second. I still want to know if they coordinate this.1. Romney: “Attacking me is not an agenda.” Good rhetorical move.2. Obama nodding too much. Also blinking more than Romney.3. Romney, I think, looking more like the grownup.4. Loose hair on Romney’s forehead is a distraction.5. Romney finding excuses to bring up the economy, job market, etc. This was inevitable, I guess.6. Now Obama finding excuses to bring up tax policy. Also unsurprising.7. And…….Romney talking about unemployment, balanced budgets, road to Greece, etc etc. Maybe they should schedule a fourth debate so they can get to foreign policy.8. Oh my lord! Romney off on his “small business” fetish again.9. Obama: “If you talk to teachers, they’ll tell you class sizes make a difference”. Yes, and if you talk to disinterested researchers, many of them will tell you otherwise (or at least that the difference is too small to justify the cost). If you talk to oil execs, they’ll tell you how important it is to subsidize oil, but maybe the folks with skin in the game are not the best sources for this sort of thing.10. Obama, who threw a trillion dollars at his friends, bailed out his buddies in the auto unions, etc, says that his budgets are not driven by politics. This is gagworthy.11. And now Romney gets his info on how many ships we need by asking the Navy — much like getting your info on the importance of class size by asking teachers.12. Obama: “Sure we have fewer ships now. We also have fewer horses and bayonets.” Great great response.13. Obama: “I will stand with Israel if they are attacked.” I’m not sure: Is this a major new policy being announced here, off the cuff?14. Romney is starting to look physically uncomfortable.15. Romney criticizes Obama’s “apology tour”; Obama responds by changing the subject 100%, talking about some other trip he took. Reminds me of four years ago, when Jeremiah Wright was in the news, and people were asking Obama why he hung out with this loon; he responded by giving a speech about slavery.16. Obama doing a good job of cataloguing apparent Romney flipflops.17. Obama defending the bin Laden mission on the grounds that the daughter of a 9/11 victim got closure from it. If he’s making foreign policy on the basis of giving “closure” to a few hundred Americans, then he shouldn’t be president.18. I still think Romney looks pale and ill, and is getting moreso as the evening goes on.19. Romney given an opportunity to express qualms about extrajudicial killings via drones; chooses to pass.20. Obama talks about the importance of making sure middle eastern govts “aren’t corrupt”; does this mean, for example, that we don’t want those govts throwing billions at favored industries?21. Obama complaining about businesses and workers not getting a level playing field when it comes to trade. Dammit, what’s the fetish with level playing fields? If American consumers benefit form an unlevel playing field, why should the American president object?22. Level playing fields are for sports (where the competition is supposed to entertain), not for economies (where the competition is supposed to serve consumers).23. There’s been thankfully little China-bashing tonight.24. Now it’s Romney arguing for leveling the playing field (not in those terms, but his meaning is the same).25. Okay, Romney is a total idiot. “They sell us more than we sell them, so it’s clear who doesn’t want the trade war”. I would love to see the argument that gets him from one side of that ‘so’ to the other.26. Obama gets in a cheap shot with “You’ve invested in companies that ship jobs overseas”.27. Obama is also a total idiot: “If we’d taken your advice, we’d be buying cars from China instead of selling cars from China”. Why would that be bad?28. Romney re car industry: “Under no circumstances would I fail to help this industry get on its feet”. Then why should we prefer him to Obama?29. Romney: “I love teachers” repeated a few times, sounds kinda loony.30. Romney’s closing much less effective, I think, than Obama’s.

Romney peaked to early. His lead will dwindle down to nothing by the end of the week. Obama will pull away starting later this week.

Horses and bayonets.
I thought that was hilarious - something I would say...but might come across as a little beneath the president. Not beneath me, mind you - but pretty condescending. This will play well to the left - piss off the right - and wait to see what it does to the middle.

I dunno. Mitt's measure of "the right number" was based on WWI tallies. By his logic, every president since Woodrow Wilson deserves his scorn. I think stupid statements like this deserve a rhetorical backhand. It's not like he was dropping zingers all night.

just got home from curling. Can someone from the non-crazy demographic fill me in on who won this one?TIA
They mostly had the same positions. Obama attacked more, got in a few notable zingers, and was pretty clearly in control of the debate. Romney tried to just talk about the economy whenever he could and somehow basically failed to bring up Benghazi. Pretty clear victory for Obama, but certainly not a knockout blow or anything of the sort.

Excuses for what? You're looking for me to admit Romney lost in a debate i didn't watch? You'll have to look somewhere else for some positive reinforcement.

Romney won the third presidential debate – and how he did it was encapsulated in a single exchange. The candidates were discussing military spending and Romney had just accused Obama of making harmful cutbacks. The President wheeled out what must have seemed like a great, pre-planned zinger: “I think Governor Romney maybe hasn't spent enough time looking at how our military works. You mentioned the navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military's changed.” The audience laughed, Obama laughed, I laughed. It was funny.

But here’s why it was also a vote loser. For a start, Twitter immediately lit up with examples of how the US Army does still use horses and bayonets (horses were used during the invasion of Afghanistan). More importantly, this was one example of many in which the President insulted, patronised and mocked his opponent rather than put across a constructive argument. His performance was rude and unpresidential. Obama seemed to have a touch of the Bidens, wriggling about in his chair, waving his hands dismissively and always – always – smirking in Romney’s direction. By contrast, Romney sucked up the abuse and retained a rigid poker face all night. He looked like a Commander in Chief; Obama looked like a lawyer. Who would you rather vote for?

Obama may have won the debate on points but lost the war. A classic Pyrrhic Victory. Words describing Obama's debate performance: petulant, small, rude, unpresidential. Biden-like, dismissive, smirky.... Obama's great strength has been his swag, likability and being cool and calm in stressful situations. In short a man who looked like he was in control.. Obama was none of that tonight.

Uh, in a word no. Yes, we want someone in control, but we also want some fire from Obama...something he hasnt shown enough of.

Max posts like he is twelve years old.

Sportsbook line moved considerably from this morning. Romney went from +145 to +170. Obama now at -210.
What do the points mean? So if I wanted to bet $ 100,000 on Romney at Sportsbook and he won the election, how much money would I get back? And visa versa with Obama?
If you bet $100 on Romney at +170 odds, you would win $170.You'd have to bet $210 on Obama at -210 odds to win $100.

Ronald Reagan had fire and he did it in way that was Presidential. He often used humor to illustrate his point. The point is that you don't have to come off as rude, condescending and unpresidential to make strong political points in a debate.Obama lost the debate tonight. Not no substance, but by being unpresidential, petty and even childish which is throwing away his greatest strength from his last election. People buy more on emotion than on substance. People bought "hope and change". They will not vote for this new Obama which is very unlikable.

Psssst - Pyrrhus won the battle and the war. Pretty sure Obama would be happy to settle for a Pyrrhic Victory on Election Day.

Romney won the third presidential debate – and how he did it was encapsulated in a single exchange. The candidates were discussing military spending and Romney had just accused Obama of making harmful cutbacks. The President wheeled out what must have seemed like a great, pre-planned zinger: "I think Governor Romney maybe hasn't spent enough time looking at how our military works. You mentioned the navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military's changed." The audience laughed, Obama laughed, I laughed. It was funny.

Uh, in a word no. Yes, we want someone in control, but we also want some fire from Obama...something he hasnt shown enough of.
Ok, so tell me something. How is an opponent who throws around terms like "apology tour" being Anything but childish and petty. You seem to have your candidates personalities crossed somehow.

"We can't kill our way out of this mess."

Regarding Iran that would be sanctions and negotiation. Romney all over the place. ME is "unraveling" yet he basically says he would have done everything the president has done. Libya, Mubarak, etc.

"And -- and we're going to have to recognize that we have to do as the president has done."

:loco:

Imagine how the right-wing would have reacted if Obama had uttered 'We can't kill our way out of this mess'? After all this saber-rattling regarding Iran. Obama would have been crushed for saying that. The story would have been Obama does not have the stomach and that he is an appeaser.

Poker face? Funny, I spent the last half-hour of the debate wondering how Romney could possibly keep that smirk on his face for the entire debate. ETA: "we have fewer horses and bayonets" is not the same as "we don't use horses or bayonets".

:shrug:It took you 3 debates to figure this out. Mitt is built for the general election.
