Prime Revis vs. Prime Jerry Rice (1987-89 with Montana) (1 Viewer)

I can't remember guys like Deion Sanders or Rod Woodson ever being thought of as totally unbeatable. But Darelle Revis is thought of as totally unbeatable right now.

Just as a thought exercise ... how might Revis have competed against a prime, late-1980s Jerry Rice with Montana slinging the rock? Is Revis good enough to have been able to consistently goose-egg Rice in his prime?

Assume 100% health for both guys.

 
Apparently Revis is now the most overrated player in the NFL. Deion and Woodson were both FAR better than Revis.

One-on-one for a whole game. I'd give Rice 8-140-2, and that's assuming San Fran didn't have to play from behind.

Remember what the Patriots did to the Jets defense on MNF two weeks ago? That's what the 49ers in their prime would do.

Rice would kick Revis off his own Island and make him swim back to the mainland.

You probably need to jog your memory then, because Sanders was absolutely considered as unbeatable as Revis is right now. Probably even moreso.

I remember Rice doing very well against ATL so I did a quick check. I was too lazy too look up everything. But in 4 games in 1990/91, he had 3 monster games including a game with FIVE touchdowns (YES FIVE!!!!!) and one bad game. Unless you think Revis >>>>>>>> Sanders then I'm going to say Rice would do just fine against him.

They were not FAR better. If you want to say better, fine. But Revis belongs in the discussion provided he has another few great years and can stay healthy.That being said, gimme Rice.

Yes they were.We're not talking best corners in the game at the time. We're talking two of the best cornerbacks of all-time and absolute walking pick6 game changers.

Revis is great but right now he is not in Sanders or Woodson's class. He's not even in the tier below them yet.

 
Turns out some of Revis' accomplishments supposedly establishing his bona fides are not really that big of a deal. Yes, in the last two seasons he has had impressive games against the likes of Moss, T.O., and Ocho Cinco. It's apparent now that this is no big deal. I'm not saying he is not talented. I'm not saying he is not one of the best out there right now. I am saying he is way overhyped.

Revis' 2009-10 year was as good as any ever. If he does that a few more times, he will be in that class. I don't see a reason, barring injury, that he won't. So I will agree he isn't in that class yet. But Revis' year last year can be put up with almost anyones.

LOL-- Montana to Rice-- two of the top 5 players of ALL TIME-- would blow right through Revis... People always elevate the best of the present day in their minds. He's great- but as others have shown, he's not THE BEST, and Rice had great success agaisnt THE BEST.

 
I'll take the guy who lost an ACL, came back the same season, broke his kneecap, then put up 1100/9 the next season at age 36 over the guy that faked a hammy pull because Moss toasted him for a TD.

So, if Rice played against Revis for an entire season, he'd have 2,240 yards and 32 TDs?

Revis isn't doing it this year, and that was half the season where he may not have even been the best CB on his own team. If we are just judging current players by how their primes were, Revis isn't even the best active CB, he's barely top-5. I think Champ Bailey at his peak is better than what Revis has been. Ronde Barber too. Asomugha and Charles Woodson are in the discussion as well.

ETA: Also, as great as Deion was, I always felt like Rod Woodson was the better player. Not as flashy, but better all around.

If you're talking about Revis in the beginning of the season, coming off a hold out, and with a bad hammy, then yes, I agree. If you are talking about the Revis over the past 6/7 weeks, then you are sorely mistaken. Two different players and he's been about as good as he was last year. Best CB in the league when healthy, and time will put him near the top of all time.

According to the averaged stats, if Rice played against Deion for 16 games he would have put up 1,700 yards and 22 TD's. Basically the greatest season ever. A lot of that was because Deion never got help on anyone. If the Jets played Revis on Rice one-on-one for 16 straight games, I don't think 2,240 and 32 TD's are that unrealistic.

No it wasn't. There are probably a number of examples of better CB seasons, but the first one that came to mind for me was Champ Bailey's 2006 season. I would guess that other players like Deion, Rod Woodson, and Mel Blount probably also had better seasons.

As a Jets fan, I love Revis...today, he is one of the top 2 corners in the league...but just because he is today, does not mean it translates into his being one of the best of all-time. When Sanders and Woodson left the game (Woodson switched positions), Bailey was the early-mid 2000s' "best corner"...I am sure there were "best corners" in the early 80s, late 70s, etc. who were not named Blount, Sanders or Woodson.

He is excellent at what he does, but I always pause when teams still throw at him...no one threw at Nnamdi in his best couple of years, no one threw at Woodson, and no one even bothered to look at one side of the field when sanders was there. Revis is very good at reading and staying with guys...he does hold great receivers (at a time where there are more than EVER before), but until he starts turning some of those ill-fated throws into pick6's, he is not in the class of Woodson and not sniffing Sanders.

I will agree with this. But as someone who watches every snap, I don't even see balls being thrown his way. That being said, I'm not sure there will ever be a corner with Primetime's ability to take a ball back the other way.

had to, although I am not sure I would entertain a debate as to why. This just seems like the appropriate answer.

I don't disagree, but consider the all time ranking for interceptions returned for TDs:Rod Woodson - 12Darren Sharper - 11Charles Woodson - 10Deion Sanders - 9Ken Houston - 9Aeneas Williams - 9That said, Sanders scored 22 career TDs, including TDs on receptions (on offense), punt returns, kickoff returns, interception returns, and a fumble return. He definitely had a great ability to score when he touched the ball.

I'm glad someone else remembers the biggest risk with Sanders was not being shut down but the risk of a turnover if you threw his direction. Of course Sanders played in an era when there were more rules that protected the receivers...oh wait...other way around.I'll take Rice on this one.
 
Joe to Jerry all day. Revis is good and all, but he's a product of the NY blowhard hype....and this talk about him being on par with Woodson/Deion is ridiculous.

BTW--Jerry's 5 TD day vs Atlanta was against Charles Dimry, not Deion.

 
Revis is great. He has great technique and balance and he does a great job of keeping WR's from catching the ball.

But in his prime, Deion was so good that he could fake getting beat to get QB's to throw his way. Then he'd intercept the pass and take it the distance.

Revis just knocks those balls down.

You are getting sucked into the wrong argument. We are talking about Revis' prime, which as of now is 2009. Even if Revis doesn't play another down of football or becomes a crackhead or something, his 2009 season is a great one. You compare that and only that to Rice's prime.If you want to dream about how wonderful of a career Revis will have, that's silliness. And chances are he won't come close to Woodson/Sanders or Darrell Green.
