Pro Football Prospectus (1 Viewer)

Has anyone bought/used the Pro Football Prospectus in the past? If so, what were your impressions? The advertising spiel is intriguing--separating RB performance from offensive line performance, for example.

I've read the baseball version and enjoyed it (I'm just a baseball stat geek, not a fantasy baseball player). I wonder if football can be analyzed statistically to the depth baseball can, though.

I'm buying it this year as well. Reminds me of the old Bill James Abstracts. I imagine there should be some good info that will help in fantasy leagues, but I'm just as interested in understanding the NFL better overall.

I bought the 2004 one used last year. Didn't want to plop down cover price for something that wasn't going to be any good.

Based on that book, I'd buy it again. If you read footballoutsiders, youll like the book.

Absolutely awesome. The day it arrives from Amazon is like Xmas. I can't wait for the family to go to bed so I can read it cover to cover. Great insight. And their KUBIAK stat projection system is getting better every year.

To me, it feels like I am experiencing the Bill James of Pro Football while he was still a security guard at a bean factory. I really think this stuff is cutting edge. They're working out kinks, but I think in 5-10 years, they will be the leaders in the field.

I've loved using their stat projections (which you can buy separately in Excel format) to dominate fantasy leagues.

Got the 2006 and 2007 versions and loved them. But there's no question that the 2008 version will be the Best. Prospectus. Ever. Trust me...

Innovative, and their game charting project generates some of the best stats in the business -- if only they'd release them all. The analysis is always worth reading, though they'll interpret the same stat different ways to meet their subjective beliefs. That's not a major knock, though, as there are very few football statistics that can be interpreted as stand-alone numbers. Too many variables in an 11 man game.

Was happy to get the email this week that the ship date got moved to an earlier date.

So do you get a cut of the proceeds, or was it just one flat fee for your article(s)?

What is the ship date now?

July 9. I think it was around July 21 early last month.

Anyone pre-order?"Your Amazon.com order has shipped"HOORAAY
Did you just pre-order today and got a generic email saying it shipped once the order was pplaced, or did you order on an earlier date? Just seems starnage that it would ship on the 7th when it's not available in stores until the 9th.

I pre-ordered a month or so ago from B&N and it shipped on the 3rd and should arrive on the 9th according to the UPS tracker.

Cool, I should have pre-ordered. I just figured that it wouldn't ship until the 9th and decided to just pick it up at the store on that day.

I bought last years, but frankly didn't have the time to dive in. I only skimmed it over and was not impressed. Is it really worth a full fledged shot for any football diehard?

Amazon started shipping today. Sounds like B&N was faster. But it's in WAY ahead of the July 21 predicted released date!!! And KUBIAK projections are for sale today!

Short answer: YesLong answer: Hell YesReally though, you have to like statistics and all parts of the game, not just fantasy play.

Apparently in some stores now, too, which surprised even the FO guys themselves.

In stores, wow? I don't think I've ever seen it in a store. Hope these guys don't get too big for their britches. But big enough to ensure that the book keeps getting released earlier and earlier. Can you imagine PFP Release Parties with people standing in line to pick up their copy at the stroke of midnight? Ok, maybe I'm the only crazy one....

I'm not quite that crazy. I would stand in line to get a readable and user-friendly database of their game charting project, though. The file they sell for 60 bucks (at least the samples anyway) is impossible to do anything with.

 Mine should be delivered on Wednesday.
:hifive:Are you east cost too? I hate you guys. First you get the sun before us, now you get FOPFP ahead of us :hot:
Quit your whining! Chapters.ca here in Canada is not releasing it until July 22. I think it's all a scam for my American leaguemates to get a leg up on me.

I'm surprised you weren't impressed. Not enough data? You just don't like their methodology?
No, I do like their methodology, that's the thing. In all honesty, I did not give it a fair shot. I guess that I didn't find it to be an easy read. I bought it last August and most of my free time at that time was dedicated to overthinking my fantasy draft targets/strategy. I am going to roll with it again this year since so many here take a liking to it.

Just wanted to add that I bought this in Barnes and Noble today here in Michigan. They have been selling it since Friday. You can check if they have it in stock at a B&N near you on their website.

it came today

I bought last year edition, good insight on the game and make forecast on which players will excell at their positions, got it right with LJ although were totally wrong with Tony Romo and SF.

Anyways I already bought 2008 edition and to be fair it is good to read a different point of view based on stats and not gut feeling.

Got it yesterday, and it's as good as last year.

I think the Cowboys have replaced the Rams as the team that KUBIAK just can't get right. They expected a down year from the Cowboys last year, which obviously wasn't the case. This year they're predicting a barely above 0.500 record, and Romo, Barber and Witten are all ranked lower than I've seen anywhere else. They do have TO ranked near the top.

The projections for receivers look a lot different than last year. They're predicting twelve receivers will score 10+ touchdowns this year, but last year they predicted only one would do it. In reality there were ten.

I'm only about 20% into this thing but it's excellent!!!

I'm thinking about picking up some of the past editions when I'm finished with this year's.

I liked the comment in the book about how the KUBIAK system always seems to over value the Eagles. And this year is no different. :goodposting:
