Project-a-Guy - Travis Snider, 1B/OF TOR (1 Viewer)

One of the things in BBT times I liked to do was start a thread in the spring on certain players and ask everyone to post projections for said player.

I think it can be helpful to see if your own thoughts vary greatly one way or another from a group. Of course there's plenty of fun had mocking those with views that differ from your own; and later, retribution or further mockery at the end of the year when we see the results.

That being said, one guy that interests me is Travis Snider. Snider looked like he finally might be ready to make due on a breakout season in 2010, but injuries and a slow start hampered him. He did close out the season pretty strong. In 2011, Snider gets the chance to be the every day left fielder. So, does he finally make good on his prospect status or does his high strikeout rate send him into bolivion?

In 2010:

319 PA, 14 HR, 32 RBI, 36 R, 6 SB, 255 AVG, 304 OBP

Bill James 2011 Projection:

340 PA, 16 HR, 48 RBI, 46 R, 6 SB, 273 AVG, 337 OBP

TRE 2011 Projection:

500 PA, 26 HR, 77 RBI, 72 R, 8 SB, 262 AVG, 335 OBP

DO IT

I don't do projections, but I'm definitely buying into him this year. Horrible timing with that wrist injury last year, he was just getting it together and then that happened. Huge post hype sleeper potential here

:bowtie: Finished up really strong last year, over .300 with 6 HR in September though the K rate was still crazy high. Extrapolating his full season stats over a full season gives you 40 doubles and 28 HR, and his BABIP was pretty normal so the BA shouldn't be crippling. I think with a better lineup slot and a full season under his best, his power will come through.85-30-90-8-.275

Amazing to me that he just turned 23 two weeks ago

I feel like he's been a "prospect" forever

Hell, I am pretty sure we had him on our uber team when he was a teenager

I like him better this year for all of the reasons mentioned already plus one more: Cito Gaston won't be randomly inserting Snider's name into the batting order. I don't follow them closely so I checked Retrosheet to see where he hit last year. I spot-checked a few games and found him everywhere but the middle of the order. Cito batted Snider 8th, 9th, leadoff, all over the place so the noted run producer Lyle Overbay could take his anointed spot.

Cito's departure along with Overbay and Wells should give Snider more RBI opportunities, which should boost his fantasy value.

He's an absolute monster, one of the nicest swings I've ever seen, huge line drive %, ridiculous power. Like I've said before, I think he wins an AL MVP in the near future, but first he has to start striking out a bit less... as for this year.

.260/.325/.495

35 HR's

95 RBI

75 runs

10 SB's

150 K's

He's dropped down to 222 lbs to better play the outfield, and he's got moustache power now. Jays 3/4 hitters of the future

35 homers, but only .495 slugging?

My top-of the head numbers were based on 600 ish AB's, which he probably won't get, so I guess he'll have to slug closer to .530 to get those numbers... :goodposting:

Where are they slotting him in the order this season? You have a best-guess opening day line-up?

As it is now, I'd guess he probably hits 6th. I don't really see Rivera sticking around though, and I think if Bautista gets signed long-term, he'll be playing RF. In that case something likeDavisEscobarBautistaLindHillSniderEncarnacion3B/RiveraArencibia

I thought we were looking at Bautista at 3B this year. No?

Bautista has said he'd prefer to play in the outfield. Whether the Jays roster allows it to happen is a different story, but if he's signs long term, he's said on a few occasions he doesn't want to bounce around the field, he wants one position to worry about and he'd prefer it be in the outfield.

How about take your CASH and play 3B, guy?Lind at 1B right? Edwin DH? Will be interesting to see how that plays out.

It's not a very good defensive team

No, no it's not.

So the Jays just signed Podsednik. Drop the AB projections a little further? 4 guys, 3 spots.

The team could be a disaster defensively. Snider isn't really part of the problem though, he'll be able to play average LF. Davis/Podsednik are both below average in CF (maybe no worse than Wells the last couple years). Bautista/Rivera/Podsednik are likely all below average no matter where they play in the outfield. Bautista is an average 3B (maybe)?

Escobar and Hill are solid in the centre of the infield. Lind is a terrible athlete, he runs like a girl and has the coordination of a stoned elephant. Arencibia is a rookie behind the plate who at best will be an average defensive catcher. Molina is good as a backup. Encarnacion is actually better defensively than either Lind or Bautista, until he has to make a throw.

Corey Patterson is in camp battling for an outfield spot and is probably the best defensive outfielder there. Darin Mastroianni was thought to have a chance as a 4th outfielder but Podsednik's arrival is bad news for him.

I'm with Pickles here. You draft with his projection, and pray for NV's if you end up with Snider.
