Pros and Cons of the FFA (1 Viewer)

Just curious to know why you guys like it here...or don't.

I'm debating trying to cut myself off or not since I've wasted half my day debating whether or not all kids should wear bike helmets. :loco: Yet I find myself drawn to this place constantly and have never been able to bring myself to walk away for good.

Anyway, I thought I'd make a list of pros and cons. I'd like to see some of your lists as well.

Pros:

- I learn a lot from you all. From the NBA to politics to religion to proper care for dogs...I've learned a ton. This is really my go-to place for news and advice. Not that I'd follow it all mind you, but some good info around here nonetheless.

- I hear contrasting opinions. Living in 98% Caucasian southwest Missouri, there really aren't a whole lot of liberal voices round me and even less so in my immediate circle. I only know one person who will admit that they vote Democrat around here and only a handful of non-Christians. My life would be insanely sheltered if it weren't for the FFA.

- The jokes are funny. Lots of quick witted seriously funny people around here.

- There are some good people. I've benefited a few times from a kind word or gesture. I know some have really gotten a lot of support in times of need and I really, really like that.

Cons:

- I waste a lot of time. Having an addictive personality, I will binge post in here some days (like today). This is not a healthy behavior.

- Some of the posters are jerks. Making personal attacks, mocking opinions, trolling and baiting people just to get a rise out of them can be really frustrating.

I have learned that if I don't waste time in here I will waste it somewhere else
Good point.

This place is seriously getting in the way of my clash of clans playing.
The FFA is really just a co-dependency superstore for procrastinating introverts.
I can see this except I'm an extrovert stuck in an office all day.
Extroverts are allowed, but just S T F U every so often, ok?

:kicksrock:

Yes, sir.

Better than Reddit, etc. if I really want to post in a thread on a topic I like or have interest in. There's some level of policing here, and knowledge of the other posters and their tendencies, which is absolutely a good thing vs. the broader, unpoliced internet. Trolls might get some by here and there, but to some extent they are policed by the mods or others in threads. You don't get that on the broader internet, it's every troll trying to out-troll (sp?) one another.

It's like the nice neighborhood with higher taxes and cost of living yielding a much nicer and more laid-back living experience here vs. the lower income neighborhood where there is general lawlessness, etc. in terms of discussing topics on the internet.

Not perfect, but a whole lot better than the other side of the tracks.

You should go, your shtick get's very old.

Wow....that's pretty damn good right there.
Yeah....definite truth to that.
Extrovert here. :hi:

PRO - For the most part I enjoy discussing things like politics, "relations" aka :pickle: that I would never discuss at work.

CON - having to wade through the partisan :hophead: when I just want to have discussions about the topic at hand.

I agree with your pros and cons. In addition, I'll add that it's hugely helpful to be able to argue with highly-educated people in a semi-anonymous setting like this. It's not so much that I change my mind on things because of stuff posted here (it's happened, but it's uncommon). It's more that my own thinking gets sharpened and less lazy.

I am able to have conversations here about topics that I wouldn't normally participate in real life.

If people in my real life talked down to other people the way some posters talk down to other posters, I wouldn't associate with them.

I learn a lot.

I often need to kill time with my job and this place is great at that.

If there is a news story I'm interested in, I can usually get other perspectives on it here and discuss it.

Pros: coming here often reminds me that the unreasonable people I deal with at the office are actually much more reasonable than most of you. that gives me hope.

Cons: coming here often reminds me how unreasonable some of you people are and that I may have yet to meet the really unreasonable people of the world. that scares me.

On the bold part.. if they talked that way "in real life" I don't think they'd still be able to post that way here.

Pros:

Most people here are smarter than me, so I learn stuff.

Some people are more pathetic than me, so I get to make fun of them and/or feel better about myself.

Lots of people here make me laugh.

Cons:

Random moderation; pointless trolls can ruin the place for a few days before finally getting a timeout while solid contributors get a timeout for something really stupid.

Not much new or interesting lately. Not sure if it's the actual content or if I'm bored with it in general. I'm reading fewer threads, finding fewer opportunities to write something good and getting fewer likes. Could be the FFA or me or a little of both.

Pros

always someone that can seriously help with anything auto, construction, computers anything

schtick really fun most of the time

Cons

political

if you have a differing opinion you are considered a moron for the most part

Pro - My wife isn't here.
Not that you know of anyway.

If you ever left your computer logged in and she saw your screen name, she could track your posts, and even bait you into saying things about her.

Uh...............ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

God I hope nobody ever ran into that. That would be a con. But it's only a potential con...........unless it happened, then its a con

I frequent the FFA because I genuinely enjoy sausage fests.

I also needed somebody with whom to share my obsession with hot chicks in yoga pants. My wife was getting sick of me pointing it out in public.
