Punt and Kickoff Returners 2009 (2 Viewers)

Per Rotoworld via philly.com/Daily News:

Eagles S Quintin Demps will be the Eagles primary kick returner with Ellis Hobbs (back) out for the season.
He didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday, and is listed as questionable after practicing Friday.Any Brian Witherspoon updates from Jacksonville? They seem pretty content with Mike Thomas (24.6, 44 yarder last week) handling kickoffs.

Rex Ryan told Newsday Friday Dwight Lowery will start over Lito Sheppard at CB. Lowery could also be asked to help out on kick-returning duties...

The coach said it’s “a real possibility” that either he or Brad Smith will handle the kick-returns instead of Justin Miller.

“We’re always going to do what’s in the best interest of us,” Ryan said. “If we think Lowery or Brad Smith gives us the best opportunity to be successful in our return game, then that’s what we’ll do.”

Can anyone shed some light on the SF return situation? Robinson was the guy for the last 3 weeks and then this week it was Battle. Robinson was active and had one carry.

I didnt see the game, due to the lack of opportunity because of Cutler's 5 picks I think there were only three KR for SF in the whole game. (2 FG and the opening kick). Were those kicks away from Robinson or has Battle just replaced Robinson as the KR for SF?

Thanks for the assist

I did not get to watch the game so I'm not sure if Robinson was on the field on kickoffs but this is what espn has as how the kickoffs went. The first field goal that Chicago made they kicked off on what I would guess was a muffed kick or squib kick because it only went 41 yrds to the 29 and was returned by K. Balmer for 4 yards. The kick after half time was to Battle for 24 yard returnAnd the last field goal they made went to battle again for 26 yards.I am not sure if this means Battle is the surefire returner but to me it would look like he was in this game, you would have to talk to someone that watched the game to see if Robinson was on the field at all. But I do remember hearing a while back that Battle was going to be there returner.Hope this helps you out.

I read on a thread here that Choice has been working on returning kicks. Is there any truth to this? One would think it would be Rossum, but is his injury more serious that what was first thought?

Amendola has a few things going for him today as long as he is fully recovered. his horrendous defense faces a awesome offense that should provide like 10KR opps. game of course in dome and looks like Carney handling all kicking duties. Carney's weak leg should provide returnable KO's. Amendola has a nice role as the Ram's slot Wr as well. the Rams should be playing catchup after the Saints 2nd possession

Jordy Nelson back today as well. James Jones did provide a few really big plays but he didn't produce so well where i think Nelson is completely out of the picture on offense. after the Bucs put up 38...........safe to say the packers defense is in freefall and KR opportunites may be boundless

Playing Amendola over Roddy White based on those thoughts as well. Here is hoping for 10 KR opps.....

I'm liking Amendola over Cribbs this week because of the matchup... I'd be happy if Cribbs runs the wildcat but not sure it's this week... return yardage = receiving/rushing

Greer and Sharper down as well. nickel package and secondary definetly weaker for today's matchup. of course that's all dependent on Bulger and the OL to actually get the ball out

Bernard Scott returns the opening kickoff for the Bengals. Is Andre Caldwell done as KR?

Edit: Well i think Scott's return for a TD answered that question.

I am assuming that with Chris Henry out with a broken arm, Caldwell is even more involved in the offenseWitherspoon active and returned the first 2 KR, and Thomas the PRSame game...Justin Miller is a healthy inactive today, Lowery on both KRs, but they were a squib kick and failed onside attemptFYI - Thomas just made a terrific 3rd down catch and then later a 4th down throw

from ESPN Dallas Monday:

Returner Allen Rossum said he's waiting on the trainers to allow him to start running this week. Rossum hasn't played since pulling his hamstring in his first game with the Cowboys on Oct. 25.

"I feel as good as I can feel," Rossum said. "I don't want to go out there and run half speed. They're letting me rehab more and more each day."

There could be a change on kick returns. Felix Jones, who averaged 19 yards a return Sunday, still looks tentative. Kevin Ogletree returned one kick for 22 yards, but Phillips said he didn't see much difference.

Still, the Cowboys have to be slightly concerned with Jones' lack of big-play ability in this area since he hurt his knee in Week 3 against Carolina.
There were rumors a few weeks ago Rossum might be cut, but clearly the Felix situation has them rethinking that one. :blackdot:

Week 10 roundup:

Danny Amedola's involvement on offense was curtailed with the unexpected emergence of Brandon Gibson (7 catches for 93), and he netted just 74 yards on returns. He still managed to top the 1,000 all-purpose yardage mark in only his 7th game since signing with the Rams.
Josh Cribbs has been released from the hospital after being hurt in last nights matchup with the Ravens. Cribbs lateraled the ball after a reception on the final play and immediately was leveled by a defender. He lay on the ground while trainers attended to him, then was immobilized and taken off the field for what head coach Eric Mangini called precautionary reasons.
Quintin Demps was reportedly close to be able to go v. the Chargers, and with Sheldon Brown (hamstring) out this week, he would seem likely to be included in the dime package at Chicago and perhaps return kickoffs with Hobbs on IR. On Monday, however, Andy Reid described his injury as the dreaded high-ankle sprain.
Fred Jackson had a yeoman perfomance: 167 yards on KR, 25 on PR, 8 rushes for 48 yards, 3 catches for 23 yards, and a 27 yard TD pass to Lee Evans. 21 touches for 290 all-purpose yards in the loss to the Titans.
Justin Miller was a healthy scratch, Brad Smith returned one KR 15 yards, and Dwight Lowery lined up deep three times on 2 squibbs and an onside attempt (e.g., zero returns). Meanwhile Darrelle Revis was uninspiring as a replacement for Jim Leonhard on PR. Good luck with all that, Jets.
Jordy Nelson had 4 catches for 32 yards, but Tramon Williams handled both kickoffs and punts (1-24 and 2-25).
Alvin Pearman had another good week for the Titans, averaging 20.3 yards on KR (his best return was negated by a hold) and 15.0 on PR.
Clifton Smith racked up over 200 yards Sunday, 6-171 on KR and 4-31 on PR
Louis Rankin will handle KR, and Burleson will continue at PR for the Seahawks. On Sunday Justin Forsett's role at RB increased due to the Julius Jones injury. The big question is whether the 5-foot-8, 194-pound Forsett can handle a full load at tailback. He carried a career-high 17 times for 123 yards on Sunday. "Good question," Mora said. "I think we'll find out. Yesterday we took him off the kickoff return team in the second half (to give him a break). We're going to find out. He's going to be carrying the ball a lot this week." Expect Forsett to no longer be involved in the kick return game as along as he is the primary RB. Josh Wilson has supplanted Ken Lucas at one starting CB spot and appears unlikely to return kicks any more in 2009.
Brian Witherspoon fumbled his last kickoff, but the Jags recovered. Will be interesting to see if he keeps the kickoff duties (123 yards on 5 returns) or if it reverts back to Mike Thomas, who had the only PR v. the Jets.

Excellent update, thanks.

More info re: the Iggles kickoff returns

Maclin was not very good (4-72), but Macho Harris - the 5th rounder who beat out Quintin Demps in TC for the starting SS position - had two for 57 yards. Not sure that Reid tip his hand who it will be next week.

Anybody think Bernard Scott will still return kickoffs if he is the starting RB? I know Jamal Charles did it last week in KC

(Per KFFL) Joe Reedy, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati Bengals RB Bernard Scott will return kickoffs in place of WR Andre Caldwell.Published Thu Nov 19 9:27:47 p.m. PT 2009

Does anybody know if Johnny Knox lost his KR duties? Danieal Manning has been taking em back more as of late.

Since Derrick Williams may not be a go for this weekend, who's gonna replace him? (Aaron Brown or Dennis Northcutt?)
Williams returned to practice yesterday after sitting out Wednesday.IF he can't go, logically Brown will handle KRs, but he's not a great option. 1) Cleveland's offense isn't just bad, its historically awful, 2) while he did well in college, he lost the job due to poor performance earlier this year.Northcutt will handle punts per usual. He has 3 KRs in 10 years, and 2 of them this year - one was a squib kick, the other was the Vikings game after Williams hurt his hip (Brown was a healthy scratch - missed assignments on offense landed him in the doghouse). No matter who is deep on kickoffs, it is doubtful they'll have much opportunity given the woeful Browns offense.

If someone gets info on Jordy Nelson and if he is going to be returning kicks again I would really like to know.

Hey guys I know this isn'ta WDIS forum but seems to be the only spot I can get decent information on using returners. So my aplogies. I was wondering what you guys thought about benching LT for say Clifton Smith TB vs. NO I have cribbs but due to the injury dont want to use him this week and the matchup is not a good one for a lot of returns. Any help greatly appriciated.

considering the fact that you are the only one of us who knows your scoring system, I think you're probably best suited to make that call.

The scoring system is the same as RB 1pt=10yards 6pts=td

From Yahoo:Nov 19 S Quintin Demps didn't practice again Thursday. He missed last week's game with a high ankle sprain. He isn't expected to play this week. Demps would've been the Eagles' kickoff returner. Macho Harris is expected to handle those chores.

"Also inactive for the Titans is kick returner Alvin Pearman.  Fisher elected to sit Pearman because the Texans have only allowed 16 returns for 65 yards this season.  Instead, the Titans likely activated a defensive lineman or linebacker in Pearman's place.  Kevin Kaesviharn will take over the kick return duties, which are expected to be limited." © titansradio.com

Kevin Kaesviharn? So (sorry Jay, I know you're just quoting)...WTF was that supposed to mean? That KK was deep on PRs last night but got no returns. Because Michael Griffin got the KR duties (4-98).

Odd move regardless since Fisher had only positives about Pearman the first two weeks he handled returns.

It's all good. LOL! I thought the same thing. Good thing my fantasy team was winning by 86 pts going into Monday night. All I had was Pearman left and my opponent was done. That still doesn't make me feel comfortable.

I saw that Andre Caldwell returned that kick vs Oakland because Bernard Scott was cramping up. He promptly fumbled that return, as you may recall. Because of his poor performance as a returner and increased role as a WR, can we officially put him to rest as a KR? Anyone got any news?

I got goose egged as well; had high score of the week sewn up (IDP/KR, we start 12), but I saw the inactive list and  Par for the year...had to cut Rossum yesterday, add him to the scrap heap that includes Mark Jones, Will Blackmon, Jerious Norwood, Leon Washington, Quintin Demps...all were stud returners in 2008 who were rostered on my team back in August.Still got Amendola, Hixon, Logan, Clifton Smith and Brian Witherspoon...but its been a scrambling kinda year.

I can't find anything on google regarding changes for Sproles or Naanee on returns. Where are you seeing this?
I think it's because Sproles registered 0 kick returns and Naanee had 1, but it was returned for 0 yards so I'm assuming it was an onside kick. I can't imagine the Chargers taking Sproles off returns considering he kept those duties even when he was starting for LT.Devin Thomas could be a good pickup. Looks like he's returning kicks now that Cartwright is the starting RB, and Thomas is also a starting WR.

Good call on Thomas if he is keeping the job.

I have several players that may/may not be returning kicks because they are more involved in the offense:

Justin Forsett - sounds like JJ might come back this weekend, which would prolly make Forsett the KRer once again? I presume Josh Wilson, when active, will not be on KRs again this year

Johnny Knox - 1,100 all-purpose yards this year, but I never know if he will see many targets (11-110 last 4 games), and worse, how many KRs he will split with Hester and Manning (nice 41 yarder last week, so hopefully...)

Jordy Nelson - another one who is neither fish nor fowl; appears to have wrested the KR away from Tramon Williams, but he was underwhelming last week (4-85), and not much more than the 4th or 5th option in the passing game

Bernard Scott - apparently took the job from Caldwell with the TD v. the Stillers, but starting in place of Benson, Andre was back there (and fumbled) last week

On the IDP side, Witherspoon seems like a safe bet to continue KRs, but not sure who to chose as the other DB - Michael Griffin or Macho Harris. Prolly go with the latter as he did well last week, and Demps cannot seem to stay healthy.

My league is total yardage kick returners are often a better option than all but handful of stud RBs/WRs; but the real stars are elite KRers who get involved offensively (Cribbs, Sproles). Thought I was all set with Norwood & Washington, so its a lot of matchup guesswork.

I realise this smacks of WSIS, but hopefully the info I have relayed will generate some discussion. There are a lot of fluid situations with different teams return games this year, so any homer/inside info would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know if Derrick Williams will do the KR duties for Detroit Thanksgiving Day? I see that he isn't on the injury report but I haven't heard if he will resume his return duties after being out injured week 11. He should get a lot of chances against GB if he is a go.

Doubtful (from mLive...forget the beat writer for the GR Press, Brian VanOchten or sumtin)Aaron Brown -- It was a breakthrough performance for the rookie running back and kickoff returner. He caught his first NFL touchdown pass -- a 26-yard toss from Stafford -- in the final minute of the first quarter. He also had an impressive showing on kick returns subbing for the injured Derrick Williams. He began the season in that role, had issues with fumbling on kick returns, then got a second chance against the Browns and responded with four returns for 118 yards, including a 46-yard effort at the beginning of the second half.

Brown looked so impressive returning kickoffs, it seems unlikely he'd lose that job even when Williams returns to the lineup.

Brown was pretty good in college at KRs; Williams really hasn't done anything to warrant going back to him.

CB KR Dwight Lowery (high ankle sprain) didn't practice Wednesday and is likely to be replaced in the starting lineup by Lito Sheppard, finally healthy after being hampered much of the season by a quadriceps injury.

(Yahoo! Sports)

I would assume David Clowney takes over as KR for the Jets. At least this week.

Has Buckholder now taken the KR job from Royal or do they return kicks together. Royal returned kicks last week, but had 0 vs. the Giants and had 3 punt returns.

Royal got hurt during the game and Buck took over kickoffs after that. I haven't seen anything that says the move would be permanent. Royal's injury isn't supposed to be serious.
