Punt and Kickoff Returners 2009 (2 Viewers)

After one game, what are people's thoughts on Cribbs? He was used a great deal throughout this game - even getting a couple of snaps in the wildcat while at the goal line.

How did he LOOK running routes? We could easily be looking at a top 10 wr this year...

What does one have to do with the other? McKelvin plays for the Bills....Maroney is on the Patriots.
 
Eddie Royal was on both PR and KR duty for yesterday, and all the depth charts I can find list him as doing both. I think this is a relatively recent development.

Anyone know if this is expected to continue all season? Calling all Bronco fans!

Ware got hurt yesterday? Wasn't even aware, heard it on the radio this afternoon. Also, shooting from the fingertip here (hehe sorry...but it sounded like nothing serious).Anyway, I think the deal is Danny Ware is KR1 and Nicks is the backup. The rookie WR got one yesterday after the RB was dinged up.

I would like to know this as well. Royal was on all of Denver's PR/KR duties yesterday, but that's a recent change on the official depth charts (I think). Any Denver fans know if Royal is on PR/KR full time for the rest of the season?
 
I have been wondering the same thing as I have him in a return yardage league.

He was dinged up in the preseason so my hope is that they took him off return duties in week 1 to ease him back into the lineup. I am hoping that a Falcon homer can give some info on this as I cannot find anything online.

Miami only scored once so there weren't many chances and the two returns that Atl did have were for 6 and 14 yards. Doesn't sound like an upgrade from a guy (Norwood) who averaged 25.7 yds/return last year.

 
Eric Weems took the opening kickoff. Not sure if Norwood was on the field. Other than that though, MIA only kicked off one other time (onsides).

I think they may want to see what Weems can bring to the table to protect Norwood, but would not be hesitant to go back to him if they felt he was a drop-off.

Didn't they actually have Norwood out there, and then pulled him for Weems? Weems is the punt returner for sure. If they can get weems to do kick offs, seems like they would, so they could give Norwood more carries.
 
I am trying to compile a list of players that return punts or kickoffs as well as play another WR or RB position.

For example...

Wes Welker

DeSean Jackson

Devin Hester

RB Ahmad Bradshaw, who was New York's leading rusher against Washington, will likely return to his previous post as the club's primary kickoff returner due to the injury to Danny Ware.

WR Bobby Wade has been signed by the Chiefs. He's a potential PR.

Darius Reynaud had not returned a punt in a game since high school when he assumed that role against the Dallas Cowboys in the Vikings' final preseason game. If there was any apprehension on his part, it certainly didn't show on an 81-yard touchdown return. Catching the ball near the Vikings sideline, Reynaud made three defenders miss, gave a nifty move at midfield and then finished it with a somersault into the end zone. Reynaud wasn't quite that spectacular returning punts in his first "real" game Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, but he demonstrated some more playmaking ability in the Vikings' 34-20 victory.

The combination of Reynaud and rookie Percy Harvin on kickoff returns makes the Vikings special teams return units potentially more dangerous than in recent seasons. The Reynaud/Harvin tandem showed some flair and ability to change field position in the season opener. Reynaud returned two punts for 54 yards, which included a 36-yard return in the second quarter, the team's longest punt return ever in a season opener. Harvin returned three kickoffs for 99 yards, including a 41-yarder at the start of the second half. His 33-yard average was the third-best effort in the NFL in Week 1. Granted, it was only one performance, but the Vikings return game at least looks capable of being more dynamic with those two on the field. "I'm doing a pretty good job on punt returns and Percy's doing a really good job on kickoff returns," Reynaud said. "The guys they have back there can really take it the distance."

But the Vikings return game probably didn't strike fear in opponents last season, which could change with Harvin and Reynaud. The coaching staff also believes Jaymar Johnson, who was inactive Sunday, is capable of producing big plays as a returner. "They all can interchange and I am not going to lock any of them in," Childress said. "The great thing is that all those guys have that ability along with Bernard Berrian or Jaymar Johnson if he happened to be up."

Norwood is still the KR. He was back deep on the first kickoff, but the kick went to the up-man Weems. The Dolphins did not kick off again other than 1 onside kick.
 
Any insight as to the kick return jobs of these two? Ginn returned the first few kicks but gave way to Patrick Cobbs after a sub-par performance.

McKelvin had the key fumble at the end of the game. Will these guys still return kicks next week? I am in a 10 Ret Yard = 1 point league, so this kind of stuff is critical!

Mckelvin is the bills kick returner. He will still return kicks.I know Ginn had the job early on last year and lost it. Don't know much about his situation in Miami right now though.
 
McKelvin is an elite stud returner. He was one of the best in the history of college football, and had an outstanding rookie year, racking up nearly 1,500 yards after he replaced former KR pro bowler Terrence McGee (5 career TDs).

It was one bonehead play. Doubt it will affect anything.

Mckelvin is the bills kick returner. He will still return kicks.I know Ginn had the job early on last year and lost it. Don't know much about his situation in Miami right now though.

Wide receiver/kick returner Nick Miller was a feel-good story coming out of training camp, going from an undrafted rookie from Southern Utah to the 53-man roster as the starting kick returner. Miller missed the opener with what was described as shin splints, but now he is on crutches with a hairline fracture in his right ankle. He's out 4-to-6 weeks. That means Louis Rankin will continue returning kicks, assuming the Raiders don't go out and re-sign Justin Miller after cutting him in training camp. Rankin could also become the punt returner. Johnnie Lee Higgins missed practice with a shoulder sprain, so Rankin and Hiram Eugene took turns fielding punts at the start of practice Wednesday.

Having Bobby Wade available against the Raiders is also a priority for the Chiefs and coach Todd Haley. Haley would like Wade to be available, if nothing else, as a punt returner, where the Chiefs have sorted through several candidates and found them all lacking. But Haley may give a game-day roster spot to Wade only if he can do more than return punts. "We've got to get him quickly into the mix," Haley said. "He's got some punt return ability. He hasn't done it in awhile. He's done it at a high level at times. "We've got to get him going quick. If we are going to use him as a punt returner, he needs to be able to play some other plays. Five or six (punt returns) at the end of the day isn't enough. We've just got to get him up to speed fast." Wade has returned punts at times during his seven-year NFL career with Chicago, Tennessee and Minnesota. He was one of the best in the league for the Bears in 2005. "I'm looking for the opportunity," Wade said. "It's something I kind of got away from last year," he said. "I did it the year prior and all the other years before that. The coach talked to me about it. If that's what they want me to do, I'm definitely ready."

Is anyone worried about Sproles losing his returner duties as his role increases (and probably starts in week 2 with LT out)? Or is this stupid to worry about because his production on offense makes up for the lack of special teams.

Based on this speculation, nothing official:

Sproles believes he can carry a heavy workload each week if necessary. Turner and the Chargers would like to preserve him a bit so he can stay healthy and be fresh late in the season. That means increased carries for Bennett and returns for Buster Davis or Antonio Cromartie if Sproles' current role changes.

"We have to get Darren some help," Turner said. "We have things we can do in the return game if he's more involved in the offense. There are things we can do from a running back standpoint. The thing is that he wants it. He wants to stay in."

this is brutal for IDP/return yard leagues. he dominated in my league last year. finished with 180 pts when number two IDP had 140. also, per rotoworld mckelvin left the game in the first half, as well with an ankle injury. any news?

Tarvaris Jackson has seen action at quarterback in the first two games of the season, replacing Brett Favre at quarterback in the fourth quarter once the Vikings have taken a substantial lead. But that's not the only time Jackson has found himself on the field. In the second quarter of the Vikings' 27-13 victory over Detroit on Sunday, Jackson was the up man for a punt by Chris Kluwe. The look came as a surprise to many. So what did Jackson think about it? "Do I really have to cover a punt?" he said Monday when asked about his debut on special teams. "I guess the more you can do." Jackson wasn't completely surprised because he had been taking part in special teams practices to prepare for the possibility of being used as the player who stands between long snapper Cullen Loeffler and Kluwe. The formation had three players stacked to the far left and three more to the far right. The ball was snapped to Kluwe but Jackson acted as if he was going to get it and then faked a pass to wide receiver Darius Reynaud, who was set up to the left. As the punt left Kluwe's foot, Jackson ran down the field to cover. All the while he was watching his back. "Knowing that I'm a quarterback, I know they'll probably try to take a shot at me," he said. "It was different. A lot different." It remains to be seen if the Vikings would actually use this look to try to complete a pass or if this just served as something for future opponents to worry about. "I guess it's just to give them a different look," Jackson said. "Put it on tape and they have to work on it."

The St. Louis Rams on Tuesday released WR/KR Derek Stanley to make room on the 53-man roster for another WR/KR — Danny Amendola, who was signed off the Eagles’ practice squad. General manager Billy Devaney said Amendola is expected to return punts and kickoffs Sunday, when the Rams take on the Packers at the Edward Jones Dome, in what would be his NFL regular-season debut. “We’re just trying to get some juice in the return game,” Devaney said. The 5-foot-11, 186-pound Amendola, 23, is a Texas Tech product who signed with the Cowboys in 2008 as an undrafted rookie. He spent that season on Dallas’ practice squad, then was signed to Philly’s practice squad in January. Stanley, a Rams seventh-round draft pick in 2007 out of Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater, averaged 12.3 yards on three punt returns this season. In ‘07 and ‘08, he averaged 9.2 yards on 11 punt returns, 25.1 yards on 45 kickoff returns, and caught six passes for 119 yards and one touchdown.

What can Johnny Knox do for an encore? A kick return for a touchdown no doubt would add to his growing legend. Knox should get plenty of opportunities as he has taken over Danieal Manning's role as the primary kick returner. "Johnny's the guy," special teams coach Dave Toub said. "If Danieal is able to handle the defense and all the things we're asking him to do there, occasionally, in a special situation, we'll use him." Manning, who led the NFL with a 29.7-yard kickoff average last season, took over those duties from Devin Hester, arguably the most electric return man in NFL history. "I have two of the best returners in the league, but they're playing offense and defense," Toub said. "They're starters. It's rare. When that happens, you can't ask too much of a guy. You have to have another guy." Coach Lovie Smith said there are no plans to take Hester off punt returns. Manning, who averaged 26.7 yards on his three kickoff returns this season, says he has no issues with Knox returning kicks. Knox assumed the task against the Steelers and responded with two returns for 41 yards, including a long of 26. His 37-yarder in the third quarter was all but wiped out by a penalty on Al Afalava.

WR Johnnie Lee Higgins (right shoulder) was limited in practice but could return after missing last week's game. If Higgins and Hiram Eugene can't play, Darren McFadden will line up as punt returner under orders to call for a fair catch on each kick, Cable said.
