Punt and Kickoff Returners 2009 (2 Viewers)

Does anybody have any information regarding Jerious Norwood as a KR? I know he's recovering from a concussion suffered a few weeks back...I saw that again Weems did all the returning this past weekend and wanted to see if there was insight as to whether this would be a permanent situation as Norwood as thrived in the past on KR duties
I'm interested in this as well. I won't drop him for a while unless there's some hard info, but I was hoping to see him out there returning the kicks last week.

Would Delaine Walker return punts as well or just kick returns? Either way, could end the year on a very strong note.

Delanie Walker returns kickoffs. Arnaz Battle returns punts. Don't be surprised if Michael Spurlock or Crabtree returns kickoffs following this bye week. I don't think the Niners want a TE to return kickoffs.

Why not? He did it last year. You think they would prefer to have Crabtree returning kicks???

Walker did kickoffs last year when Rossum was injured. I don't see why the Niners would keep Spurlock on the roster and drop Rossum if they don't plan on using him as a returner.

It looks like Jordy Nelson will now be returning kicks and punts. He also gets work in the offense so he's a great option to pick up off the ww.

This week for sure; after that, I wouldn't be suprised if they revert back to Williams for kickoffs. He was pretty effective back around 06-07 doing that, and it was discussed at the weekly presser.Jordy should be the PR either way, and appears from a distance to be the more trusted WR3 option over JJ.

One note on Jamaal Charles. Chiefs RB3 Jackie Battle was placed on IR, which means that Dantrell Savage who has been a game-day inactive and someone who has returned a lot of kicks for the Chiefs the last 2 years will likely be active on Sundays for a while, at least until Kolby Smith is healthy enough to play. Savage could steal some (or all) kick returns with Charles getting more active in the offense.

Guys to watch this week:

RB - Jamaal Charles (see above)

RB - Jerious Norwood (does he get KR duties back?)

WR - Jordy Nelson (slot receiver + KR/PR)

WR - Roscoe Parrish (slot receiver + KR/PR on a team that gives up a lot of scores)

CB - Josh Wilson (will he get KR duties back?)

Guys to watch next week:

WR - Ted Ginn Jr. (WR1 + KR)

TE - Delanie Walker (return guy at TE)

Nice post, I am also interested in Charles, Norwood and Nelson this week. Beat writers saying anything about these situations?

Just beware that Ginn is not really the WR1 anymore on that team. It is pretty much a committee and he has only had 10 targets (3 for 61, 1 TD) the last 3 weeks since his big game. He has only had 5 targets the last 2 weeks. He obviously has value in a return yardage league, but not as good as he could have been if he was still the top WR there.

Norwood has had 2 concussions this season and has to wear a special protective helmet.

Of course he won't be returning kicks this week, this season, and maybe ever again.

Anybody heard any word about whether or not Quintin Demps will be taking his return job back from Ellis Hobbs this week? I saw that he was listed as a full participant in practice and that he's Probable to play, and I know Ellis has had some problems with fumbles on his returns. Any word?
Demps is inactive today.
Demps will be active this week and has a ST role; its just not the one we were hoping for. From yesterday's Philly Inquirer:
Safety Quintin Demps, who has been inactive for the last three games, will take over for the injured Dimitri Patterson (quadriceps) as the gunner on special teams, coordinator Ted Daisher said.

Does anybody know if Jamaal Charles is returning kicks today?

It's a bit fluid - you have to try to guess what a power tripping rookie HC will do - but Savage has been inactive the last 2 weeks IIRC. Charles did fumble the opening K.O. 2 weeks ago (7-0 NYG real quick), but later ripped off a 53 yarder.I haven't found anything definitive from Haley this week but he should be a good flex play - return yardage plus 8-10 touches at a minimum.ETA: fix formatting

Thanks

I currently have (RB)Charles in my flex with Cribbs, Knox, and Ochocinco starting at WR, I actually have Devin Hester on my bench

Am I crazy? Or should I put Hester in for Knox or Charles? I think Charles is the big question mark, without returning kicks and only being a (3RB) he might put up useless numbers.

FBG Depth charts list: Quinten Lawrence (KR) for the Chiefs, is that data stale?

He returned one kick week one, and has been active for only one other game.Charles is KR1 unless Savage is active.

Jamal Charles took the opening kickoff in Week 6. Savage appears to be active too.
Yup, both are active, nice 31 yarder BTW.Witherspoon healthy again and has taken the KR job back from Mike Thomas. Tough to bench a guy with 4.16 speed (you read it right...he didn't go to the combine but just search YouTube).Amedola just ripped a 58 yarder. Kid is a stud KRer right now.Anxious to see if Andre Davis will be the KR for the Texans.

stream of consciousness summary of today's kick returners

281 yards on 9 returns for Dom Hixon today - so the G-men got that going for them. 3 catches for 22, nice 303 yard all-purpose yardage day in the blowout.

Another WR3/WR4 who is quietly putting together a productive season is the Bengals Andre Caldwell. 85 yards on KR and 6-57 as a receiver.

Danny Amendola had 125 return yards and 3-25, giving him around 660 all-purpose yards for the Rams in the last 4 weeks.

Derrick Williams had a mediocre day at Lambeau, I don't know where the Lions turn to next.

As hinted at in the weekly presser, Tramon Williams was back on returns - ripped off a 45 yard punt runback. Jordy Nelson had the kickoff return in the Packers shutout.

Mike Thomas handled punts and one kickoff, but Brian Witherspoon's 3-92 should seal his place as the Jags primary KR.

Quintin Demps was finally active, and handled kickoffs - but 3-55 should not worry Hobbs owners too much.

Mark Jones had an average day for the Titans (6-128), but just goes to show that any kickoff return man on a bad team has some value because of the number of opps.

Jamaal Charles was 3-79 on kickoffs, but not very involved on offense (touches were 26-5 in favor of LJ).

Steve Breaston is finally fully healthy; 3-64 on punts and 7-77-1 is what his owners expected when he was drafted.

Joshua Cribbs took one to the house on a 98 yard kickoff return today for the Browns.

A little later the Bucs Sammie Stroughter scored on a 97 yarder. The latter was subbing for Clifton Smith, who got creamed on a nasty helmut-to-the-chin hit while waiting on a punt; expect a five figure fine for that one. Captain Munnerlyn had a 34 yard punt return today in the same game - that little guy is fun to watch.

yea but then knox had the last kickoff return in the game. There was also a play where they were both on the field. So I don't think Knox is losing the job

there was a play where it looked like manning was going to toss it to knox, but changed his mind and kept it when it looked like the play would be blown up.

I'm guessing they're talking about that.

Seems like Josh Morgan has been demoted to WR3 with Crabtree finally signing and may also be the potential returner for the Niners.

Danny Amendola looks like he could be a GREAT option off most ww's. The Rams recently acquired him and they have a terrible defense so he'll get lots of kr work. However he also gets a bit of work on the offense.

I haven't seen any news on Ellis Hobbs recently and wondered if he will resume KR duties once he is healthy. Any insight on this?

I think most KR leagues had him scooped up long ago. He's been putting up great return numbers since his first game a few weeks ago. The touches on offense have been a bonus for those of us that jumped on him when they signed him.

BUFFALO

After they were unable to deal Roscoe Parrish before Tuesday's trading deadline, the Buffalo Bills have demoted him. The long-time punt returner will give up duties to Fred Jackson. To be sure, this is a major change. Parrish has struggled this season but has led the league in punt-return average the last two seasons. At 13 yards per runback, he is the NFL's all-time leader in punt returns. For whatever reason, he hasn't been as productive this season. Parrish is averaging only six yards per punt return and had a fatal fumble against the Cleveland Browns two weeks ago. Jackson, meanwhile, appears to be a natural. He had a 27-yard return last week against the Jets, with another 22-yarder called back. In the past, he has filled in for Parrish with high results. On seven returns last season, Jackson averaged 16.6 yards. With Marshawn Lynch back from suspension, this is another way for Jackson to get his hands on the ball. Parrish? His days may be numbered in Buffalo. Offensively, he has become a footnote. And, at least for now, he is not the team's primary punt returner.

Any injury news on Jordy Nelson, is he for sure going to miss some time?
2 weeks according to the HC yesterday. Brett Swain and Tramon Williams will handle kickoff returns, while Charles Woodson takes the punt returns.
Thanks

I'm curious about Ted Ginn's chances to be on kickoffs again this week with Cobbs out. Any Phins guys hear anything yet?

Everything I've read suggest he's going to be the kick returner. There were rumors about them trading for Cribbs, but obviously that's over now. Ginn will hopefully be great for return yardage leagues moving forward.

I found these two quotes on Sun-Sentinel.com"A: You should get your wish this week with Ginn returning kickoffs against a Saints coverage unit that ranks 30th in the league in that department."

"Matchup Dolphins should exploit:

Dolphins KR Ted Ginn Jr., against Saints kickoff coverage: It's hard to find a weakness on this Saints team, but they do rank 30th in the NFL in kickoff return yards allowed (26.8). "

Looks like these writers are assuming that Ginn is doing kickoffs, but I still haven't seen anything official from the team.

Both are available in my league but my roster space is limited. Who do you like better going forward in return leagues, Cribbs or Ginn?

If Cribbs is not rostered in your league, then you're either not in a return league or playing with extreme dolts. That's like Brees being available in a 2-QB start league.

Any word on whether Ellis Hobbs and/or Allen Rossum are returning kicks this weekend?
Not sure what Hobbs status is, but Demps did nothing last week that would prevent him from reclaiming it.Rossum is the man in Big D and ready to roll against his former team (well, one of four former teams...).

Josh Wilson might be either losing value or gaining value in IDP leagues. He's probably going to go back to being a nickel corner with Marcus Trufant back from the PUP list, but maybe this means Wilson will be in line for more kick returns with the lesser role on defense.

Just speculation.

Looks like Coffee will be handling the return duties now.Per San Francisco Chronicle:

No returning: Tight end Delanie Walker, who returned four kickoffs in the Atlanta game, will not return kicks Sunday in Houston. That duty goes to rookie running back Glen Coffee.

Walker returned kicks in the preseason of his rookie year in 2006 and had one notable return against Chicago.

"It was down the sideline, 50 yards, and I straight-armed the guy," Walker said. "All the coaches said, 'I didn't know you were that fast. Your straight-arm is mean.' "

In the Atlanta game, Walker said various Falcons told him he was no fun to tackle at 242 pounds with a head of steam going.
