I just ran across this over at MFL

Steelers | Holmes placed on PUP list - Mon Jul 23 9:59:00 p.m. ET 2007 (KFFL) Bob Labriola, of Steelers.com, reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Santonio Holmes (undisclosed) has been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Head coach Mike Tomlin said, "Santonio had a minor surgical procedure that is not football related. He's going to be watched for a day or two, but it's a non-issue."

I take it clearly there is another type of PUP list where it's not the first 6 weeks of the season?

The way I understand it, the PUP during camp, players can be removed from it at anytime.

The only PUP List that people need to worry about is the one that starts on Opening Day. Players on the PUP List to start the preseason only will miss time if they get put on the regular season PUP List.

Once on PUP they can be removed whenever. Once the season kicks in, they're waiting a minimum of 6 weeks to come off. Sometimes they need a roster spot in TC, sometimes it's just a quick sorta strong hint to the player to take it easy and follow the docs orders. Might just be he's goofing off and/or working out when he should be sitting home resting...never know. They don't often tell all the details.IIRC BB's first day of TC test usually sends a few onto PUP too.
