The Broncos quietly did a lot of work on Oregon QB Bo Nix—they had an hour-long Zoom with him on March 7, then sent a Sean Payton-led contingent to Eugene to work him out on March 18, per sources.
So interest is there. Fit, too. But not having a 2nd-rounder could complicate it.

Payton has never once made a player/skillset comparison between Nix and Mahomes.
Last year I looked ahead to see what QB's would be available for the Broncos to draft. I watched Bo Nix play and thought this guy has to be one of the top two or three prospects. Nope! He has consistently been the 5th or 6th ranked QB. One of the things I noticed was that all of the other QB's have a "Special Sauce". Caleb is all around great. Jayden Daniels was an elite runner. Drake Maye had elite size and arm strength. JJ McCarthy was a winner and an elite athlete. Penix has an incredible arm. Bo didn't seem to have that elite extra talent that the rest had. Then I realized his "special sauce" was his brain. Nix is extremely smart and has a very fast processor. I think the public has been swayed by the argument that Bo only threw short passes. They saw that Bo was the sixth ranked QB so clearly he was the worst of the first round talent. Denver probably could have moved up to 8 and got Penix. Denver certainly could have beat the 4th and 5th round offer of the Vikings to the Jets but they didn't. I've heard that Bo was the third QB on Denver's board. I believe it. Denver didn't pick up one of the 30 free agent QB's. I think they had eyes for Bo and knew they could get him at 12. They saw him throw in person and were impressed. They gave him offensive installs to learn and he aced it. They know he can make all of the throws. They know he is an above average athlete.
Bo was the sixth QB off the board. Lets not forget this was an extremely talented group of prospects. I think there will be a synergistic effect with the combination of Bo Nix with Sean Payton. I'll admit I wanted Penix and I was a little bummed JJ went to the Vikings. I can see why people may not be super excited with the Bo Nix pick. I think he will be an acquired taste that Bronco fans will learn to love by the time the season rolls around.
The difference is Bo is going to a much better situation. I trust Sean Payton more than Matt Patricia. This is not a knock on Bo Nix at all but reading this all I could think of was Mac Jones getting drafted by the Pats.
At least we have something to look forward to. I was bummed when we didn't draft Fields. I've always much preferred drafting a QB than trading for one or signing one in free agency. Whether it works out or not it will be fun watching the process.I love the pick and can’t wait to watch him dominate.

I know. I am the one comparing him to Bo to show why I think he'll be more successful than Mac. This is the time to be looking on the bright side since this is who we got. Again...I am not comparing to Bo...just that it was exactly what was said about Mac.
Don't hire Matt Patricia as an OC and you at least have a fighting chance!I know. I am the one comparing him to Bo to show why I think he'll be more successful than Mac. Agreed. I was fairly high on Mac Jones coming into that draft until the Pats picked him. It was a bad situation for him and I suspect his frustration with the staff lead him down the path of handling some of the situations he was put in poorly. I'm curious to see if he becomes a guy who has a resurrected career a few years down the road.I know. I am the one comparing him to Bo to show why I think he'll be more successful than Mac. Nice post. Payton made no secret after the Russ debacle that he was looking for a QB who could process information significantly better and faster. One of the things I noticed was that all of the other QB's have a "Special Sauce". Caleb is all around great. Jayden Daniels was an elite runner. Drake Maye had elite size and arm strength. JJ McCarthy was a winner and an elite athlete. Penix has an incredible arm. For all who think the Broncos could have traded down and still gotten Bo Nix … @chad_reuter of @NFLMedia says, “No,” that wouldn’t have worked.
Why? Because the Rams wanted Nix.
"The Rams were taking Nix at 19. Absolutely, if he was available,” Reuter told @CecilLammey & me.

During the Broncos' two OTA practices that have been open to the media, Bo Nix hasn't appeared overwhelmed or confused like rookie quarterbacks can look.
In fact, Nix has appeared as comfortable in the complex offense as the other two QBs.
No Chance its not Bo Bo slingin the Rock later than week 3As much as I hear about DEN wanting to bring along Nix slowly, that just ain't going to happen. The only way you can justify it is if you have a current good QB, or by some miracle, your scrub placeholder is playing like an MVP. The Broncos have 2 scrubs, both of which have lifetime completion percentages below 60% and a combined 31 TD's/33 INT's. These guys are barely competent backups, and the Broncos crowd will be screaming for Payton's head if he doesn't put Nix in ASAP.
sometimes when a rookie is ready that still doesnt mean you play him. you gotta have the personell around him to give him a fair chance at success. As much as I hear about DEN wanting to bring along Nix slowly, that just ain't going to happen. He went undrafted in my dynasty league where I hold the first FA draft pick. Kinda crazy to me, and I'm definitely taking him since my QBs are...trash (Goff and Bryce). Ok not trash trash, but I need another guyNix fell to me as the last QB off the board in both of my dynasty leagues. I always like to take a rookie QB, but I don't like McCarthy, and I don't like Maye over the long term.
Nobody is drafting Nix until late it appears
While I somewhat agree with your statement, it's only happened a few times in history for first round QB's. And it happens when the team has an already established good QB who's having a good season. The only time I can find where this wasn't the case was Johnny Manziel, who was taken 1.22 by the Browns in 2014. He sat behind Brian Hoyer, who was god awful with a 55% completion rate and 12 TD's/13 INT's. Perhaps if they'd just let him start earlier, they could've dumped him faster.a rookie QB behind a leaky line or without good WR will struggle mightily. Even if hes ready...... if you cannot put him into a good situation, the smart move is to sit him, give him a cup of coffee in terms of one or two late season starts and prep him for the next year.
I traded up to take him in the second round of a 14 teamer. His ADP for rookie drafts on MFL is 20th off the board.I would absolutely take Nix in the 4th or 5th. I am surprised to hear he is hanging around and going undrafted.
I'll hope to take a stab at him in the late 4th or 5th, depending on players available... that said, I am sure he goes in the 3rd or early 4th before I can deploy my strategy.

Bo Nix took most of the first team reps today, Sean Payton confirmed.
I'd say probably not. it is possible that the light will magically go on for Zach Wilson who is talented but I'd bet against that.
Absofreakinglutely not. From whom?

For a second-straight day, Bo Nix OVERTHREW Troy Franklin on a deep ball.
Arm strength not an issue.
Ryan Edwards
Another strong day from Bo Nix, especially during team drills. Very decisive, quick decisions…seems like he’s reading the defense better and things might be slowing down a bit for him. He worked with the 3s today but won the majority of those reps in Red Zone and 3rd down

Bo Nix stacked another efficient day on top of his strong performance with the first-team offense yesterday. Ran mostly with the third unit today, ball didn’t hit the ground during his team work.

Bo Nix had a great day today. He had many completions 15-yards downfield.
And he ended the today with an impressive 2-minute drive to get a field goal before halftime.
