QB Bo Nix, DEN (2 Viewers)

Nix is running away with the competition at this point. Though, he still may not be the week one starter. Simply because... a rookie is not starting the season. This is more to protect Nix than the Broncos.

Sean Payton is pleased with Bo Nix's patience in high-pressure situations, even said it's similar to Drew Brees.

“He doesn’t take a lot of sacks. I think he knows when the play is over, [it’s] time to go. Then I think he can make plays when he’s going. I used to say this all the time, ‘The sack numbers are a reflection more on the quarterback than the offensive line.’ [Drew] Brees was one of those guys. He was a tough sack. The ball came out [quickly], and I think Bo has traits like that.”

Bo Nix is getting better every day, per Ja'Quan McMillian:

"One practice where he saw that we were blitzing. He checked out of it, was able to get the offense right and make a good pass on the out route. Seeing him getting better each and every day is a good thing to see.”

I agree and I dont.

I think sack numbers are a combination of QB and O line, but some QB have such a fast release its near impossible to sack them.

Manning had it, Brady had it, sounds like Brees had it too. that super quick release is a real nice feature and hes a guy who doesnt throw a lot of picks. Nice combination.

I note that one of his weaknesses listed was that he had inconsistent footwork. thats one thing he needs to fix but I'm hoping pro level coaching can get that sorted.

either way I like what he brings to the table. I think hes a bit of an underrated QB (if there is such a thing with a first round pick)

Broncos QB Bo Nix may be a rookie, but as second-year running back Jaleel McLaughlin says, “He’s teaching me things.”

McLaughlin said he didn’t want to go into “specific specifics” re: what Nix is teaching, but he is helping with “a lot of different things in my route-running.”

@MileHighReport
Nix is getting praised by his teammates on a consistent basis, and not just your generic praise. Stuff like this is noteworthy and shows he is not only impressing on the practice field, but he is impressing in the locker room and with his teammates.

It's pretty clear. leaning on Bo Nix's athleticism will be a part of this #broncos offense. Letting him use his legs to carry the football and running the RPO game to keep teams off balance.

I was too hard on Nix, he looked good today.
Ditto. One preseason game, but he performed well. I try not to overthink my initial thoughts once preseason happens but it is difficult not to get excited about guys who look good. I try to remind myself when coach Spurrier took over in Washington and they rolled in the preseason…then promptly flopped in the regular. With all of the data available I am surprised there is not more accessible comparisons between pre and regular to analyze. Website idea?

Is this another Zach Wilson or Mitch Trubisky situation? I read that he is constantly having to get cues from the sidelines. That isn't a good thing for complex NFL offenses. He also makes poor decisions from the pocket and has panic throws.

Update?
This isn't coming from local media, who are at every practice. This is purely a national media narrative. It's not true.

Oh yay thanks we need more people digging through weeks/months/years old posts looking for things that didn't turn out to be correct.

No, but I did give him his props just a few posts above. It's one preseason game against backups, but he looked very good and should be their starter.

Maybe I'm missing something but I watched that video of all his passes and... he didn't look that great IMO. There's a handful of passes that a first team defense would've picked. A couple low passes. He was able to move the ball but I'm not sold yet.

What impressed me was his presence in the huddle and approaching the line. Last year, the play calling came in slow. Denver had delay of games and false starts all over because they got to the line too slow. Nix seemed to have a grasp of the offense. He got the ball out quickly. He had one bobbled snap and he threw Dulcich into coverage that got him dinged up, these both were clearly on him.

Overall, it was a good performance. Denver has a lot of young talent on the offensive side, so hopefully things are looking up for the future.

I was mostly impressed with his feet and their calling runs for him. Could be a nice fantasy asset if managed properly. He’s a check down QB but Payton runs a check down friendly offense.

After rewatching Bo Nix, even more impressed with his preseason debut:

— PERFECT ball to Reynolds in the end zone, should have been a TD

— He kept his eyes downfield and had great pocket presence and awareness

— Excellent on third down

— Made quick decisions when pressure was getting to him

— First pass that was nearly picked off, he was hit low by a lineman after Quinn Meinerz was beat. That clearly impacted the throw

— He stepped up in the pocket often

Andrew Mason
Sean Payton on Bo Nix’s preseason debut:

* “His decision-making was good”
* “I felt he was comfortable in the pocket”
* Two plays where he could have set his feet better

He’s going to be the starter. Clearly the Broncos best QB. He’ll have growing pains, like every other rookie, but looks like he can be good. He executes what is called for and has a little wiggle to improvise.

Bo Nix is so fun to watch. They move the ball so easily when he’s in….wouldnt be surprised if Sean Payton names him the starter

I was in the Broncos QB Mtg Room Thursday night and it was so cool to watch how Bo Nix learns. Davis Webb does such a good job with that entire room.

Jeremy Nicolls
Yea, Bo Nix is the guy.

I don’t care if it’s preseason. He’s the guy.

All the potential is there. And I’m willing to let him grow as a player through the mistakes.

He’s the guy.

I want you to watch how CALM AND CONFIDENT Bo Nix’s feet are in connection with how INTENTIONAL he is with his eyes on the first throw. HE IS SEEING IT SO CLEARLY. His experience playing in multiple offenses throughout college is showing up in spades. Bo knows football

Alright, I take this back after seeing that second game. Looked pretty good.

From another site...

Nix earned the rare distinction by demonstrating a poise born of extensive experience.

He started an FBS-record 61 games across five seasons as a college starting quarterback at Auburn and Oregon. Nix became a starting varsity quarterback at Scottsboro High School in Alabama as an eighth grader and later won two state championships at Pinson Valley High School. The common refrain from those who have coached Nix and played alongside the 24-year-old is that it hasn’t felt like they were watching a rookie compete. The rookie has dropped back 34 times in the preseason without being sacked. He hasn’t turned the ball over in a game and has only thrown one interception in training camp during 11-on-11 sessions.

“He has a very unique combination of humility and confidence that goes a long way for his position and certainly as a rookie stepping in here with a lot of pressure on himself,” veteran right tackle Mike McGlinchey said. “He’s taken that in stride and there’s no fear of competition and there’s no fear of getting out there and going for it. That certainly has shown in the way that he’s progressed all of camp.”

Yeah, I thought he looked calm, and accurate.

Where do you guys have him in your QB ranks? Where are you looking to target him in SF leagues specifically? (standard 12 team format) Feels like currently undervalued, even with a team no one is too excited about offensively.

Not gonna lie, he's looked really good, and I was wrong about him and the pick. When the Broncos made the pick, I thought it was a panic play. Everything I've read or heard since tells me quite the opposite. Nix was their guy from the jump and they were going to do whatever they needed to do to get him. Color me impressed with how he's looked so far. It may be preseason, but some QB's you just see something special when he takes the field. I don't care if it's against starters or third stringers. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of QBs that haven't looked good against similar comp in pre-season. Nix seems to be that guy, and he's in the perfect situation. Payton is an offensive genius and Nix is HIS guy. The way he fawns over him is a bit nauseating but if nothing else, it tells you Payton is going to do everything in his power to help him succeed. Broncos D should be pretty bad this year. Nix will be slinging it. I'll be looking to add him as my #2 stash everywhere I can.

Nix's early career at Auburn was pretty bad in terms of sacks and pocket awareness. And then... the penny dropped and he was near historically good at those things while at Oregon. It's weird how the extra time in college might have done that -- improvement like that almost never happens for guys making the jump from college to the NFL.

Penix was always very good on that front -- he just couldn't stay on the field.

I think his career at Auburn was 'uneven'. He had some real nice moments there, but the inconsistency kept him from realizing his full potential there. I mean, he DID start his very first game as a true freshman against Oregon in a game he won for them with a last second Hail Mary bomb. After that, fans were expecting the second coming from the second generation QB with five stars behind his name. But the guy had poor coaching, coaching changes, COVID, season-ending injury and a supporting cast that wasn't very good at all when he was there.

Getting out of his dad's shadow and into a completely new environment was the best thing that happened to Nix. Rooting for him. Have him in two leagues already....

Aside from looking the part and being able to run a Sean Payton offense and having plenty of arm, Bo Nix has real ability to make stuff happen with his mobility. Like high-level stuff

Bo's usage with first string but against second and third string
To clarify (using Allbright's own words), what Allbright says is "basically" true.

However, in the first preseason game (Colts), Nix also played primarily with 2nd and 3rd teamers. Only his first out of five series was with first team.

The Packers did sit their starters in the second game, but in the joint practices earlier that week it was 1's vs 1's and Nix showed pretty well.

Obviously anything that occurs in the preseason needs to be taken with a big grain of salt...but Benjamin Allbright is also not the most precise reporter when it comes to making his point.

Well the Broncos did a poor job of predicting who will make the team, start and be what string, and assigning minutes/opportunities related to that
There's a growing number of people rightfully upset that the guys cut and that left got the bulk of the work over the inexperienced ones. I think it started last year with Lil Jordan and Mims and grew from there in a bothersome way to fans.

That's a poor job by the experienced Sean Payton.

As far as Nix, the QB must have a rapport with the starting WRs which apparently worked out in this messed up summer for them. The other is the backs + TE (safety valve) and the all important OL communication and adjustments.

It could be minimal and everyone is a pros pro here but chances are there are sacks and whoops stuff the first bit of the season that could have been worked out.

Meh. I'm a pretty stalwart Broncos fan and believe that Payton & Co. have done a phenomenal job this offseason. There's a palpable change in team culture and a core of young, hungry, aggressive players on the ascent of their career.

From the cut list (below), WR Lil Jordan and FB Michael Burton are the only ones that got cut that significant reps during preseason. But Payton has known all along those guys would clear waivers and, like last year, he could elevate them from the practice squad when needed.

Tim Patrick got significant run in the Packers game but in retrospect that was showcasing for a trade that unfortunately didn't work out.

At QB, none of the players would have respected Nix in the huddle if he didn't earn it right in front of their eyes. Yes, that required Stidham to getting some first team reps but it came with the huge benefit that now everyone in the locker room is bought in. No different than multiple other positional competitions held this summer.

This team is finally being built the right way IMO.

Nix is +1000 on DK Sportsbook right now for OROY, 3rd ranked QB on the board (behind Caleb Williams at +135 and Jayden Daniels at +500). Certainly seems like a plausible bet to cash and could follow the CJ Stroud path from last year (JAG level RBs, WR/TE with untapped potential, decent to good OL, favorable strength of schedule).

Since about half of rookie QBs are flops, one of Williams or Daniels will likely be mediocre. Plus you gotta think Daniels has a decent chance of getting hurt (see ARich last year) which would take him out of the running also.

In redraft he's unlikely to get drafted except in 2QB leagues (ESPN ranking currently is 251 overall) but I'm definitely keeping this dude on speed dial to claim off the WW early if there's a spark. He might get picked up/dropped a few times like Love did last year.

In Best Ball he was going in very, very late rounds (pick 220+) for a really long time and he's only started creeping up in ADP recently while still being too low in Best Ball (~150-160 pick).
