QB Drake Maye, NE (4 Viewers)

Is this guy not cooked? I hope he has something left in the tank because Maye needs some legit weapons...
Outside the fact he got injured last year, and his age, he's shown no other real data on being "cooked". I'd say Diggs def lost some of his long speed from where he was 3-4 years ago. But even last year, first season with a new team/system/QB, tape showed him getting open at will and having great separation. Stroud just rarely had time to even drop back, let alone make a first read and throw. But he could still easily be a teams WR1. For fantasy probably more realistic to expect WR2 numbers though.

I think he'll pair great with Maye. I think it will be even better if they add another receiving weapon though.

He looked like a shell of himself two years ago with Josh Allen throwing to him and a healthy knee.

Cooked? I don't know about that term just a significantly lesser version of his old self. Still a saavy vet, good route runner, probably best WR on the team but hes' not scaring anyone and might be closer to a WR3 now then a WR1.

Not much help to Maye IMO. Might help move the sticks a little but the super disappointing off-season for Maye beats on and can hope they got something coming to help him in the draft. Anything, OL, WR's, even another TE that can run.

Things people need to consider but aren't when it comes to Diggs . . .

- Look at the data of WRs 32 and older and what they have done that age forward. That will be far more useful than looking backwards and just transferring that level of production to NE.
- Look at the history of guys coming off of ACL surgery and how they have performed in their first season back.
- If people want to make comparisons from recent seasons, compare the talent and firepower the Bills offense and the Texans offense had vs. what NE has.

The media up here has been pulling out numbers that don't really apply when it comes to what he will do this year and beyond. Diggs had 100 receptions playing with Kirk Cousins!!!! (7 years ago) He had 127 catches his first year in Buffalo!!!! (5 years ago playing with Josh Allen) He's had 5 years with 100+ receptions and 6 with 1,000+ receiving yards!!!! (in his prime and before suffering a major injury) Those are all true and nice talking points, but anyone expecting Diggs to get 125+ receptions, 1,500+ receiving yards, and a dozen TD has had a few too many. (Not saying people in here are suggesting that, but talk radio in Boston has had some really crazy hot takes this week.)

I get it the, Pats needed somebody and they had some extra money laying around, so why not. He's better than what they have most likely. Altho maybe not as much better than Demarcus Douglas than you'd like.

On the other hand, the only thing worse than a crazy egotist who is a good receiver, is a crazy egoist who is a moderate receiver. Vrabel is probably who'd you want to be coaching this player, at least.

Talk Radio is not where you go for rational analysis in Boston...for the Pats you go to guys like Bedard, Giardi, Perry, Curran, Lazar, Reiss, Kyed and Callahan and none of them are saying this is some type of home run...they all know what is it which is hopefully a quality veteran that is better than the garbage they currently have and hopefully helps be a bridge to the long term answers at this position.

I don't think the negativity is totally accurate in this thread (you and Anarchy99). I don't like the signing and think it was too much and that it actually will take a full year (towards the end of next year) for him to get back, but Matt Harmon charted him and still has him as an outside receiver in the league, although no longer a deep threat like he was (which Buffalo kept trying to use him as). I don't think they got any help for Maye for the beginning or middle of next year, but as far as Diggs goes, you might be jumping the gun like some did with Davante Adams.

I'm generally with you about aging, but we're starting to see the wheat separate from the chaff these days when it comes to aging out of effectiveness and off of the field. Guys are on the slight uptick of playing just a bit longer than we presumed they would at the beginning of this decade. Perhaps it's just the fan in me and I don't want to let go, but I'm not interested in kicking dirt on the graves of these guys just yet. I do think that Adam Harstad of FBG wrote an excellent couple of articles about aging and how the cliff looks more like an actuarial table than it does any sort of linear progression when it comes to aging.

Anyway, what that means for dynasty fantasy football (if one is thinking about that) is something else entirely. Nobody has adjusted to this yet, so the vet WR markets still suck, unlike their actual markets in the NFL, which seem quite, um, robust, actually. Even if the NFL deals are really one-year deals with team options, they're for quite a bit of money.

As for Maye, this signing does little to help him and the Patriots still get an F so far in that regard. Perhaps Harmon's Tet McMillan charting will be a boon for the Pats because the news to report on Tet is good news. Could be the 1.04, although I think you can trade down and get Tet or Golden still.

Is being realistic being negative?

I would normally consider financials when it comes to evaluating players, but I didn't even bring up the money side of it. It's premature to have a firm opinion on that part, as we haven't seen the full contract details yet.

I think Diggs is an upgrade over the guys they had, and a healthy Diggs could help quite a bit. But I am not sure he will be healthy enough this year to make much of an impact (NE went through this last year with Bourne and the year before with JJSS). If Diggs isn't at full speed or strength until next year, at 33, he'd really be bucking the odds to be a top producer. Look at Keenan Allen as an example of how this stuff can go sideways. He was unstoppable in LAC at 31, suffered a relatively minor injury, switched teams, and put up 70-744-7 with the Bears (for $23M).

I also realize NE didn't have many options left to turn to. In addition to offering Godwin a blank check, they apparently did the same for Metcalf, and he flat out refused to come to NE. They had to sign somebody.
