QB Geno Smith, LV (2 Viewers)

Rotoworld:

Coach Rex Ryan said he has "no idea" who he'll start at quarterback in Week 9.

Geno Smith's minor right shoulder issue was not the reason he was benched early in Sunday's ugly loss to the Bills. It was because he threw interceptions on three straight drives, further regressing in his second NFL season. Michael Vick came to complete 18-of-36 passes for 152 yards and an interception, adding 69 yards on eight carries. If Rex wants to win games, Vick would give him a slightly better shot.

Trade for Gabbert maybe.

Mark Sanchez is smiling.

I would criticize Geno but I don't think it's him. The common denominator is the Jets/coaches, not the turnstile of QBs that keep coming in and failing. You have to put a team together, not just focus 99% of your energy on the defense.

Can't really call it a "turnstile" when Rex has only had 2 starting quarterbacks.

GM John Idzik admits he doesn't know if Geno Smith is still the Jets' quarterback of the future.

"That's still to be determined," Idzik said hopefully. "You don't wanna try to answer that question too prematurely, especially when you're dealing with a younger quarterback in Geno. ... We will continue with the development curve and we will continue searching." Despite Idzik's positive tone, it's as close as he could get to admitting the Smith experiment is over in the Big Apple. Smith has attempted just 676 career passes, but quarterbacks don't get much time to prove themselves in the modern game.

ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini believes Geno Smith "might be finished in New York."

It would not be a surprise if Geno is cut in the offseason. GM John Idzik will likely be fired at the end of the season, at least in part because he drafted Smith, and the new management team will want to start fresh with a new "quarterback of the future." A second-round pick in 2013, Smith has compiled a 19-to-31 touchdown-to-interception ratio through 24 career starts.

Cimini is an idiot. He may be right, but he is just speculating - nothing more.

Agreed, but it wouldn't be surprising if Geno is cut during training cap if he doesn't show improvement.

That is silly speculation.... Plenty of ppl would have been fine if The Jets took Geno with one of their 1st round picks..

He was a second round Value flyer..... if THAT is the reason you get fired then...sheesh...

Now, every other draft pick sans Geno and Richardson... a total of 17 draft picks, I'll question more than Geno....

Craziest part of it all is that Geno never should have started year 1... So, again maybe you point the finger to whoever made that decision, but, not taking a flyer on a PROJECT QB in rouind 2.

butt hurt

Hit that waiver wire, folks! Looks like Geno is about to get his job back.

As impossible as it seems, Vick looks even worse than Smith.

The end can come quick for QB's who rely so much on their legs. Maybe Geno learned something from the break. I doubt it but might as well see.

Hopefully this will also be the last NFL job Mornhinweg has for a while. I don't understand how he keeps getting hired. You could give Ryan and Mornhinweg a Peyton or Brady at QB and they would still find a way to score under 20 points.

According to the New York Daily News, both Rex Ryan and OC Marty Mornhinweg were among those that wanted Michael Vick to keep starting over Geno Smith.

It speaks volumes about the coaching staff's lack of faith in Geno. Although Vick looked completely lost on the field in Detroit Monday night, the last thing they want to do is turn back to their 2013 second-round pick. "Does he give you a good chance to win? Or a chance to win? I believe he does give us a chance to win," said Ryan, who doesn't want a public battle with the front office as he prepares to start looking for another job this offseason. The Dolphins D/ST is a preferred play in Week 13.

Rotoworld:

Coach Rex Ryan said Friday he "anticipates" Geno Smith starting at quarterback for the Jets' final five games.

Asked whose decision it was to start Geno, Rex replied, "It's a Jets decision." It was obviously Jets GM John Idzik's decision, as he wants to get more evaluation time on Geno after drafting him in last year's second round. Per beat reporter Manish Mehta, Ryan, OC Marty Mornhinweg, and QBs coach David Lee all believe Michael Vick would give New York a better chance to win.

Rotoworld:

Asked if he thought Geno Smith was the Jets' best option at quarterback for Week 13, coach Rex Ryan replied "I don't know about that."

It implies the decision came from above the head coach. Smith was apocalyptically bad against the Dolphins, but Michael Vick was scarcely playing better during his short time under center. The Jets might as well give their 2013 second rounder another look in Week 14. Vick is no longer an NFL-level starter.

(KFFL) New York Jets QB Geno Smith made a strong impression on the team's owner with his stellar Week 17 performance against the Miami Dolphins. "I think he's a young quarterback who in the last five games has gotten much, much better. ...I've got confidence in Geno. I really think he can be good."

Give him a couple more weapons and I think he takes a step next year. He can make all the throws and has ability to expand plays with his legs. His one problem which happens with plenty of young QBs is/was decision making. He however has shown some resiliency in his game after going through what he has the first 2 years of his career some of it self induced with poor play to bounce back and play so well late in his sophmore year.

Does he have some steps to make to prove he is a capable starter? Yes. But with a better OC and a couple of added weapons and another off season under his belt you may see the growth necessary for him to be the Jets guy.

Surprising stats since Geno started again in week 12:

65.7% completions, 6 TD, 3 INT, 8.6 YPA, 98 QB rating.

Limited attempts (134) but those numbers put him near the top over the second half of the season.

Rotoworld:

Geno Smith has not received a definitive answer on his status with the Jets.

Smith has spoken to new coach Todd Bowles by phone, but it is unsurprising Bowles is hesitant to commit to the 2013 second-round pick. Smith has shown few signs he can be a competent starter, and the Jets could be position to draft either Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston with the No. 6 overall pick. There is still a chance Smith opens 2015 as the starter, but the new Jets' regime will likely do everything in its power to upgrade.

Geno Smith - QB - Jets

After attending the NFL Combine, ESPN New York's Rich Cimini gets the "preliminary sense" that the Jets won't be using the No. 6 overall pick on a quarterback.

Per Cimini, the "vibe close to the organization" is that new GM Mike Maccagnan isn't in "quarterback-or-bust mode." Smith finished 2014 strong and will be an intriguing match for new OC Chan Gailey's Pistol Spread offense, one similar to the system in which Geno played at West Virginia. Smith improved his completion rate, TD-to-INT ratio, and QB rating as a sophomore. His physical skills are superior to any free agent quarterback's.

Geno Smith would throw Brandom Marshall a welcoming party but it'd probably get intercepted

Going into this season with Geno Smith as your QB is like buying a fresh suit but wearing the same undershirt you wore yesterday

Geno Smith, finally has weapons. this should be fun
@JoeGoodberry 17m

Geno Smith gets Chan Gailey and Brandon Marshall? He could really turn it around. Really.

@greggrosenthal 2m

I still think Geno can have a solid career. I like his fit with Gailey. Good talent around him gives Geno a shot.
@MatthewBerryTMR 3m

Also Geno's been brutal at times but also been fantasy relevant too. Guessing Harvin is gone but BMarsh & Decker w/ new OC & decent run gm..
@MatthewBerryTMR 3m

Geno suddenly interesting in 2QB leagues.

It will interesting to see what the Jets do. Seems like they might as well stick w/ Geno unless they like Mariotta and he's there at 6. Or maybe a trade involving #6 and Foles. But don't see too many good options beyond those.

The Fitz signing is a welcome addition for Geno. If it is/was a younger guy who could potentially become better like a Hoyer, Mallet etc then it may have been tougher. Geno should be given every opportunity to be the starting guy for the Jets in the now and the future. I think with these added weapons there will be a lot of people eating crow about who Geno can become.

Geno has a much much higher ceiling than Fitz. Fitz is a good back up qb. One that can come in and win a game or two in a pinch. But Fitz is one of the worst qb's in crucial game time situations. He has showed time and time again that he can't be a starting NFL qb due to his low ceiling.

It's not like they drafted this guy 1.1 and feel like they need to get some ROI here. 2nd round pick? they get benched on a regular basis, or used as a throwaway pick to get Sam Bradford. Doubt he's safe.
