QB Jayden Daniels, WAS (5 Viewers)

Lost another week duet I trusting Daniels. It’s one thing to get burned so badly with him missing time as a top pick, but then the staff brings him back for no reason late in the year. Meaning all of us burn a spot for him for no reason.

I’m excited to drop him.

I'm far less worried about Jayden's "injury" yesterday than I am about his play most of the season. He hasn't looked great, even when fully healthy. I think he's been holding the ball longer, processing slower, and has been less accurate this year. Obviously there could be other factors, like maybe receivers aren't open, but I just feel like he's personally taken a step backwards even after considering all the different factors out of his control.

He needs to play.

Exactly. He wasn’t playing well. Didn’t execute in the red zone. Seemed tentative on throws. Not running. Just nothing like the QB of last year. Nobody could have started him with confidence going forward. I thought like everyone else if Marcus could do what he did last week with McLaurin back then it had to be wheels up with Daniels. Nope. If he can play with the left elbow he should. Doubt he’s risking bigger damage. He needs the reps.

Its true he doesn't look nearly as fast and sharp this year. But again, in his defense, Terry, Noah Brown, McCaffrey, even Deebo a couple of games he hasn't had available. But I honestly am as concerned about Kliff and the playcalling as anything. The lack of balance and creativity is very concerning. I would not be upset if we were in a position to upgrade our coordinator this offseason. And why hasn't Sinnott had more reps? The first play after Ertz was out he wasn't even in the game, it was Yankoff. That makes no sense to me. And while is Bill barely getting touches? I just wanna reboot the entire offense at this point.

Selfishly, as a Mahomes owner who plays Denver week 17, I picked up Daniels weeks ago for week 17 against Cowboys. I'm starting to think its not a smash start. He just hasn't played well all year. Isn't healthy. Season might be a lost cause for him.

The hype last season was ridiculous. He had a great rookie season. Then analysts started labeling him as a Top 5 QB. He may still turn out to be a really good QB, but he has to stay healthy, and with his frame and injuries to date, it's going to be a challenge.

Coach Dan Quinn said after the 31-0 loss to the Vikings that Daniels could have returned, but it was a coach’s decision to keep him out. The Commanders trailed only 14-0 when Daniels’ elbow slammed against the turf as he was chasing Andrew Van Ginkel, who had a 40-yard interception return with 8:16 left in the third quarter.

Quinn added that he plans for Daniels to continue playing this season despite the Commanders being eliminated from playoff contention.

Guess this organization wants to ruin their young QB

He should be shut down for the season, let him heal up, rest from the beating he has taken already

Quinn and the Gm are idiots to keep playing him at this point

Respectfully disagree. He is on year-2 of his rookie contract. Despite his amazing rookie season, he is still being evaluated and needs reps more than rest.

Despite the team's success in 2024, nothing is guaranteed. His play has regressed. And regardless of skill level, a player's best ability is his availability. And so far, it looks like this stick figure frame is not going to hold up. You can't bubble-wrap football players.

Exactly. NFL is a brutal sport. You simply cannot hide these guys from the violence.

Don't you think it could be that the NFL got a whole off season to scout what Daniels did well and how they used him so they maybe had a much better game plan and approach coming into this year. Maybe the NFL made adjustments and the skins coaching staff/Daniels didn't make counter adjustments and it caught up to them.

I wouldn't be writing him off but it is now back in Washington's hands to make some adjustments and figure out how to unleash Daniels again. Maybe it can't happen. Maybe in can. But NFL is all about adjusting and I haven't seen Washington adjust. Just a thought.

Fair points - I think a similar situation happened with Stroud, who’s still trying to find that mojo from his rookie year (the team’s awesome defense is hiding some of his ongoing issues).

That's what I was worried about before the season even started; less about JD and more about rookie QBs heading into year 2. Feels like it's almost always a regression as DCs get film and gameplan for them. And Kliff's history of offenses that sputter out by mid season and rarely make adjustments, even in game. Plus an overhyped offense skill group; a late round rookie RB who looked good in preseason, aging injury prone vets in Deebo and Ertz, and a debatable WR1 who sat out most of camp in contract negotiations.

Plus, as I pointed out before, the Commies schedule last season was one of the easiest, allowing JD to show out against poor defenses. And lastly, there were certain key metrics DJ/the team were WILDLY high in that played into their record and his numbers that were very obviously going to regress; 3rd and 4th down conversion rates were two of them. I believe their 4th down conversion rate was almost 90% lol. No way that was going to continue this season. Which means less time of possession, less scoring opportunities, etc.

Im worried that as soon as the Chiefs are eliminated-- Mahomes will shut it down and rest that knee. Him playing W 17 isn't a lock.

Yeah, that’s possible. And I think that’s another reason he needs to keep playing. They have stuff they need to work on.

There was no way he was living up the the hype from last year unless he was an MVP candidate this year.

The organization did him no favors IMO.

Trading for Deebo doesn’t count as a “favor”

Curious as to how his season end is going to look w 2 games left against the Eagles the final 3 weeks of the season.

Agreed. NFL defenses catch on pretty quick. QB "escapability" comes in two forms IMO - those that climb the pocket and scramble through passing lanes (Mahomes, Caleb, Dak) and the overly athletic type that prefer to escape "out the back door" and roll out. The latter are easier to defend if they do this consistently because of their lack of comfort in the pocket (for whatever reason). DCs will adjust to push upfield on the edges to contain these guys. Then they are forced to play from the pocket... different game in there. A lot more hits... it is no world for a stick figure.

Why would they?

Again, 2nd year player... still being evaluated because quite honestly... 2025 JD is <<< 2024 JD (and that is a common tale in the NFL).
I don't think 1-2 games at the end of a broken year will be the deciding factor in his future with the Commanders. The dude is dealing with a number of major injuries this year, one he just reaggravated last week. Washington is firmly out of playoff contention and they are risking their franchise QB for a couple games of reps.

That's irresponsible imo.

Dealing with injuries is life in the NFL.

You can't bubble wrap these guys and expect them to develop. To me, Daniels has not looked great this season. If he's gonna be looking for the $$$ bag then he plays for it.

I can definitely see both sides of this one. His season is lost, he has not played well when healthy and he has rarely been healthy. I also think there is a difference between a nagging injury like a sore ankle or shoulder and something like the gross dislocation that he suffered not long ago. His elbow is most certainly not healed. Can he adequately protect himself? Does he favor that side when falling and ends up hurting his other arm.

All that being said, I also think it's clear he needs reps to figure out what the defenses are throwing at him this year that is different from last year.

It's a long way to say, I don't think I can fault Dan Quinn for whatever choice he makes here.

To expound on the injury thing a bit, the first thing that came to my mind when Daniel Jones tore his achilles is that he has been favoring his other leg to the broken fibula. It's a bit different with a bad elbow, I admit, but favoring something can often times lead to worse things in other areas.

I'd like to see him play as much as possible, as long as he can defend himself and his non-throwing arm. BUT I do not want to see him play until he's had a decent amount of practices with the first unit. The whole team is out of sync due to injuries; starting an out of sync QB will not help that.

If he's 100% healthy, then sure let him play, he's clearly not though in which case makes it's an obvious decision to shut him down. They just tried playing him and he immediately re-aggravated his injury. This isn't hard, let him rest up and get healthy.

What to do with Terry now…had a nice game against the giants, but can you trust him again?
Yep, look at his entire career in Washington. He's had horrible QB play and still broke 1000 yards every season I'd keep him in your lineups unless you just have amazing depth and other alpha options.
