So if Fields sits for a year, what's his path back to starting? No one is going to sign him as a starter. Doubtful he gets brought in as legitimate preseason competition for a starting position. Sitting behind an old QB is probably his best chance.
I see a few paths to PT for Fields.
1. Put in fields if Russ looks bad, which he has in recent years
2. Sit Fields and have him learn while running the practice squad and getting occasional mop-up duty in blowouts (win or lose). Fields finally has time to be developed as a passer. Comes out stronger for it. Maybe takes over if Russ is ineffective.
3. Injury replacement - Wilson is 36 in November. Older dudes = slower to heal. He’s playing in a division with BAL, CLE, & CIN, at least 2 of whom have elite defenses. Russ could miss time.
4. Fields shows enough in practice for the Steelers to extend him an offer. Russ is gone in a year with zero ramifications, Fields starts in 2025
If Fields looks lost, they can ditch him in 2025 as well.
I see a lot of opportunity for Fields. Less so for Russ.
