QB Justin Herbert, LAC (10 Viewers)

Article in the Athletic by Daniel Popper - Chargers minicamp takeaways: Jalen Guyton stands out, Austin Ekeler’s offseason

"6. I have written a lot about how important continuity — in the offensive coaching staff, scheme and personnel — is going to be to Herbert’s development as he enters Year 3. Offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said earlier this spring that he and the offensive staff have been able to move onto “Football 202” level concepts and discussions with Herbert this offseason thanks to that familiarity. I asked Herbert if he could provide examples of some of those “Football 202” things.

“An example would be using your cadence more,” Herbert said. “It’s one thing when you’re going into a new playbook and you’re trying to memorize all the calls and go out there to the huddle and get it right. And so the easy thing is to just say, ‘On one,’ clap and get out. But now it’s, all right, I know the play, I know all these kills and alerts, now I’m going to start using my cadence to maybe get the defense to jump offsides. It’s a weapon you can use. And if you can kind of start getting better in areas like that, little by little, I think that’s really helpful, too.”

This is what I am talking about when I refer to Herbert mastering Lombardi’s system. If Herbert can throw for 5,000 yards and 38 touchdowns when he is still just trying to grasp the system, what will it look like when he becomes proficient in the finer details? We are going to find out."

ORoY coming off the bench cold. 5000/38 in a new system. We may see a record-breaking season from Herbert. Can definitely see him on the Peyton Manning track of being the pseudo-O coordinator on the field when he has fully mastered the system. Scary to consider how he can become even better.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert has focused on improving his footwork from the pocket this offseason.

"Just being comfortable and moving. Small, quick movements and being able to get the ball out. I think that's been really helpful." Herbert had a clean pocket completion-percentage over 70% last year, but his accuracy spiked when pressured, with a catchable pass rate of 57%. Better pocket presence could take Herbert, last year’s Pro Bowl MVP, to the next level. The Chargers added to their interior line this offseason with first-round OL Zion Johnson, but got weaker on the edges, moving on from RT Bryan Bulaga.

Bulaga only played one game last year.  I think they will end up starting the rookie from Georgia at left guard and slide Feiler out to right tackle.  Their O-line is substantially better than what it was in Herbert's rookie season.  Given their defensive improvements, I think the Chargers are now competing with the Bills for the best team in the AFC.

Staley and Telesco have repeatedly said they do not plan to move Feiler. All reports so far have indicated that RT will be a battle between Norton and Pipkins, with all of the other starting positions locked up - LT Slater, LG Feiler, C Linsley, RG Zion.

It would be outstanding if Salyer is so good in camp/preseason that he forces himself into the lineup, but I don't see that happening.

I agree. They are a contender to win the AFC West, and that is the strongest division in football, so by definition that means they are competing for best team in the AFC.

This dude made me a Chargers fan
Same here. I have a powder blue Herbert Jersey......and this is my second team after the Dolphins who freaking blew this pick.

I love this kid. Man crush. He is going to be a legendary player when it’s all said and done.

Justin Herbert completed 26-of-34 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns in the Chargers' 24-19, Week 1 win over the Raiders.

Herbert lost Keenan Allen to a second-quarter hamstring injury but still found a way to get things done with a flawless stat line. He spread the ball around, finding nine different pass-catchers in this one, with Allen being his leading receiver at 4-66 despite the missed time. Herbert's touchdowns went to the likes of Zander Horvath, DeAndre Carter, and Gerald Everett. Mike Williams caught just two passes for 10 yards as a ghost. Herbert and the Chargers are now on a short week with a trip to Kansas City Thursday night. Herbert might be without Allen for that one.

Justin Herbert completed 33-of-48 passes for 334 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in the Chargers' 27-24, Week 2 loss to the Chiefs.

It was an eventful night for Herbert, who tossed a pick six then picked up a debilitating fourth quarter injury to his mid-section, one he played through to mixed results. For the pick, Herbert seemed to underestimate how gassed Gerald Everett was after a long gain, throwing the ball to Chiefs rookie Jaylen Warren as Everett mostly just stood there. Warren made a 99-yard house call. For the injury, Herbert could barely peel himself off the turf after a hit with 5:09 remaining. He somehow remained in the game but was visibly wincing and passing up opportunities he never normally would, including what should have been a first-down scramble. Just when all of Twitter dot come was — sensibly — calling for Herbert to be removed from the game, he uncorked a 35-yard screamer down the middle of the field to DeAndre Carter. He's a special player. That was gutsy, but could not obscure what might be a fairly serious rib injury. 10 days may not be enough time for Herbert to heal up for Week 3 against the Jaguars once the adrenaline wears off. Stay tuned.

Speaking following the Chargers' Week 2 loss to the Chiefs, coach Brandon Staley said Justin Herbert (midsection) is "ok" and that a lingering issue is unlikely.

While hinting the issue was to Herbert's ribs — as it appeared on television — Staley specifically said Herbert was "dealing with something in his abdomen." Herbert was spotted going for X-rays after the game. The initial results must have been encouraging, though further testing is inevitable. The silver lining right now is that Herbert has three extra days to get healthy for Week 3 against the Jaguars. We might not get our first official update until next Wednesday's injury report, but Herbert managers can breathe a tentative sigh of relief.

Ok Herbert, rub some dirt on it, take some painkillers for a few days, and get ready to roll next week~!

Jokes aside, I have him in 1 spot, but he is quickly becoming one of my favorite players to roster in fantasy.
That dime he threw to Carter tonight on the last drive (when he was obviously hurting) was epic.

I don't think I have ever heard anyone say anything bad about Justin Herbert.

please just be cracked

It might be something as simple as "bruised ribs". (which is still pretty painful)
The words Staley said seem encouraging.
Hopefully we escaped anything serious..... and the extra few days of rest should help.

Rib injuries are brutal. Hope it’s not too bad because he’s really fun to watch. He’s tough as nails too for trying to will his team back. i still don’t know how he made that clutch 4th down throw. Just incredible accuracy.

Couldn't agree more.

I'm already down a Dak in my superflex league...I don't need to be down a Herbert too.

Do the Chargers still have the same team doc who punctured Tyrod Taylor's lung giving him an injection for his cracked ribs?

Mainly goes to the fact that I'm a Beavers fan and hate the Ducks and had to watch him carve us up for years. He also comes across as really arrogant and cocky. Have a few friends who knew him back in high school and he was always the 'silver spoon, cocky frat boy' type back then.

I just hate him lol

 Herbert is the farthest thing from cocky there is. Amazing that you can't see that because of your Duck hatred.

Last night’s end of game was one of the most gutsy performances I’ve ever seen from a QB, right after McNabb playing on a broken fibula.

And one of the most reckless coaching decisions as well.

Ummmmm, wasn't his dad a biology teacher? How does that translate to sliver spoon?

Don't get me started on the privilege of teachers.

And you know this from a few interviews you've seen? I have friends that knew him and have a very different feeling about that. Maybe he's changed since college, but I still hate the guy.

However, I still need him to be good at football this year because I don't draft with my heart so I own him in 3 leagues.

His family was in no way poor. Anyways, he was a douche to the people I know that knew him.

I didn't say they were poor. I questioned your assertion that he was a 'silver spoon' kid. I don't think 'silver spoon' means what you think it means.

You've never met the guy. But because you know somebody who knows somebody who met him, you've got a firmly established position on his personality and character?

Get a load of this 'douche'!
LOS ANGELES, CA— December 15, 2021 — Justin Herbert, quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers and 2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, has donated $25,000 to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. This funding will allow the Food Bank to distribute 100,000 meals throughout Los Angeles County to benefit children and families this holiday season.

Early in the pandemic, the Los Angeles Chargers made a significant contribution to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to help those in need, including people who were experiencing layoffs and reduced hours. Herbert’s generous gift this year demonstrates his compassion and the continued support that the team feels for their local community.

“My parents always instilled in my brothers and me the importance of service to others,” said Herbert. “As a member of this community, I felt it was extremely important to give back and support my neighbors. People are in need, and it’s our job to come together and help.”

Keep in mind this 'douche' is still playing on his rookie deal.....

No, I am from Eugene and went to the same high school as him and have met him. My good friend's family was in his family's social circle and he is as guinine as they come.

Anyways, everyone is entitled to their opinion on anyone. I admitted a lot of mine is unjustified rival-hate, and a lot of it is how I perceive him to come across and how he acted to some friends of mine in high school.

If you have a different opinion on him then that's great, we're all allowed to like/dislike who we please.

As for him as a football player, I hope he heals up quickly and starts carving up defenses for my fantasy team.

Fair enough, but you are the only person I have heard question Herbert's character, ever. And you are dead wrong just trying to help.

You went to Sheldon, of course all you heard was people on their knees for the guy.

And I think you are dead wrong. Have a good season.

Weird schtick/takes, TBH.

I'm an LA local; Chargers' practice facility is down the street from where I grew up... have heard nothing but positive things about the guy from folks in the community.

But hey, you do you.

FFS, anything on the ribs?

This is a thread about Justin Herbert, not a thread about Justin Herbert's Ribs. I'm a fan. I've been a fan since his freshman year. If I want to defend Justin Herbert the person when his character is under assault, I think I'm entitled to do exactly that in a thread about Justin Herbert. Agree to disagree, but we don't have any better access to his rib injury than you do.
