I don't think he's the answer in the way that John Elway or Dan Marino were the answer, but he played well, for the most part, last season, he's young and only going to get better, and I like his moxie.

Young? yep. But he can't only get better (i.e. Leaf, Mirer, etc). He has potential and I was mildly surprised to see him play as well as he did in the playoffs, but I guess I still can't get past his college letdowns. If you can't hack pressure in college, you can't expect better results in the NFL. Can it happen? Sure, but the odds are against it.

I don't view Brees as a question mark at all. Brees has an injury that will be fine by opening day. A QB can return at 100% from a torn labrum. Two torn rotator cuffs though......Brees has proven himself more than any other QB on the market or draft - plus he ran Schott Jrs system very well so it is a perfect match. Just that darn salary cap! Maybe the JEts could offer him a ton of easy incentives to make it worth his while.

Griese is due a large large amount of money, and the coaching staff is sold on Simms. Simms played well for his first season as a starter.

I meant brees is a question mark in terms of health. In all probability, brees will recover from his injury, but he's still a question mark at this point. yes, rivers is a question mark due to the fact that he's unproven. however, new jets oc Brian Schottenheimer no doubt would be a credible source to his development thus far.

Does that translate to a successful nfl qb? no, but it does give the jets the inside track in terms of if/when he can make the transistion to a successful nfl qb.

also, the jets can't afford brees. rivers could be attainable through a trade? (abraham), but that's just a rumor.

It's unlikely the jets will acquire either, but that's my logic behind which they would go after.

I think Kitna is the best qb out there for any team in terms of risk vs reward. He'd make a great "hold the fort" guy for the jets while they groom a rookie, but I doubt that's what Kitna has in mind for himself.

I think it is one thing to try and force a backup left tackle or special teamer to stay with the club even though they are not happy with their contract, but the problem potentially becomes very cancerous with a guy as recognizable as Culpepper.Think about it, you just bought a team and you brought in a new coaching staff. You really want all the players buying into the new system and ownership. The last thing you want is the biggest name in the locker room walking around bad-mouthing the organization in front of a lot of younger players who may eventually be your cornerstones.

I believe he was answering that Moss was doing just fine pre-injury, which I believe is true also. Collins is an idiot. He throws a great deep ball... oh, and he throws a good long ball too. I like the Pepper to the Raiders idea, probably for a re-signed C.Woodson. Raiders are done w/ him, and the Vikes aren't too happy w/ Smoot. A lot of people are saying that the Raiders are so over the cap (about $34M?), but that's why getting rid of Collins before he costs about 9-something mil this year makes so much sense. Getting rid of Woodson after tagging him two years in a row would also save about 8-9 mil.

I've mentioned in other threads that this logic is somewhat flaVVed. I am not supporting Culpepper as a stud last year, as he did not play all that well. But the games he really played pooly (and lost) were against some of the best teams/defenses in the league in TB, CIN, and CHI (235 yds/gm, 0 TD, 10 INT) and got knocked out against CAR. In his other games, he wasn't too bad (277 yds/gm, 6 TD, 2 INT).

7th worst passing D. That's partly due to always having a lead, forcing the other team to throw, but you're right. Their run D was average.

I like CPep as much as anyone, but let's just admit he had a bad year, stop making excuses, and hope for the best next year.

Good point, you can be the 7th ranked defense in giving up passing yards, but if the opposing quarterback rating was 56.5% while compiling all those yards, that is not a bad passing defense.Disclaimer - I don't know what the opposing quarterback rating was for the Bengals defense.

If they tag him he is guaranteed $9MM+. I imagine they are fairly confident that he won't get that from anyone given his current health issues. At least not in the long-term contract he wants. Letting him test FA does not mean they are walking away from him.

The Jets don't have the space. There are other teams obviously, but if they want to overpay more power to them. SD has been sitting on Rivers for several years and they obviously feel that he can shoulder the load if need be (no pun intended). I'm not all that concerned.

Does anyone have the conract amount left on Culpy's contract> I know he is due 6 mil in April, but what are the yearly numbers. This is THE factor that goes into teh decision process for a team like Miami to trade for him. If the total nut left is $60 mil + the $6 mil bonus for the next 8 years I say where do I sign. I would like to see how it is structured though as I may want to release him for the final 2 years and not pay ($10 mil?) a year? We can talk all we want but without these exact numbers it is like trying to predict what Culpy's year will look like NEXT year.

I watched a lot of Culpepper over the last few years on DirecTV because he was on my Dynasty team. I'm not saying that Daunte is smart to demand more money after a poor, injury-plagued year. But just to analyze his play:

It seems like the Vikings offense has been poorly coached over the last three or four years. I witnessed a lot of plays where it seemed the only strategy was for Culpepper to move around in the pocket while Moss became open and throw a deep ball. Certainly, when you have the greatest deep threat in game, it makes sense to let him jump up for it. But this did not make for a well-coached QB. No need to check off your receivers when Moss can simply outjump three defenders.

To say that Culpepper is nothing without Moss is ludicrous. Culpepper is a beast. An extremely tall, strong QB with a cannon for an arm is not common in this league. It certainly made sense that Daunte would struggle in 2005 - since he lost the most dangeros offensive player in the league.

I would never claim that Culpepper is a great QB, but let's see him play in a real offense for a couple of years before we write him off.

Collins "suck level" is underrated. I did say he throws a good deep ball, and a good long ball-and that is it! Dude throws 7 yard swing passes to his FB as hard as he throws his 45 yard post passes. He has no command of velocity and trajectory in order to make a catchable ball. Not every offensive player has the hands to control the fastball, let alone an off-target fastball that leaves a reciever hanging out to dry over the middle or on the 10 yard outs. Good point, you can be the 7th ranked defense in giving up passing yards, but if the opposing quarterback rating was 56.5% while compiling all those yards, that is not a bad passing defense.Disclaimer - I don't know what the opposing quarterback rating was for the Bengals defense.
