QB situation in SF - local insight (1 Viewer)

Alex Smith looked mediocre in the Seattle game. It's week one, and Singletary doesn't strike me as being so reactionary as to pull Smith immediately ... but in deep leagues, we need to consider such things. Can any SF locals chime in on the QB situation? If Alex Smith goes down or gets pulled, who has a legit chance at taking over? David Carr or Troy Smith? Who's more likely to succeed?

SF will give Smith every chance to succeed. Unless he completely bombs through 8 games or so, no change is coming. Very unlikely Smith doesn't start all year, barring injury.

That said, Carr would get the first shot and probably be horrendous, opening the door for Troy Smith late in the year.

Thanks for the replies guys. Are you basing this on the fact that Carr was here first, and has a better pedigree, or based on observations from practice / pre-season?

I think Carr is clearly the #2 right now and would be next in line should Smith be so awful that a change is necessary. He has much more starting experience, has been with the team longer, and excluding 2007, he has been "ok" going back to 2004. He is a bust for where he was drafted, but if you just need a guy to complete over 60% of his passes with a rating in the 80's, he can probably do that. Carr may only be mediocre, but if the team is still alive in the division, they probably have to go with the proven guy over someone so unproven like Troy Smith.

:thumbup:This is how SF (and most teams) operate. Troy Smith isn't starting unless a disaster strikes the team.

David Carr fracking BLOWS !!

The Niners specifically brought in QBs known to suck so that they wouldn't be pressured to pull Smith. At best, it could happen near the end of the season when Singletary is hoping to salvage his job.

Edit to add: Jimmy Raye probably gets fired before Alex Smith gets pulled.

Well right now in the local media, they're saying the players are having a problem relaying plays from Jimmy Raye in the booth to the sidelines and then to Alex Smith, so this week they're going to have Jimmy Raye call plays directly from the side lines. There are some doubts right now as to whether or not Alex Smith is the man and people want Jimmy Raye out. People have also been saying that Crabtree doesn't have any heart and was running lazy routes all Sunday. So its definitely a mess right now and if the Niner's get blown out this Monday, heads will roll.

Matt Maiocco who is kind of like the Niner's insider in the bay area reports that Alex Smith wore a wristband full of plays.

I'm serious about what I said exactly. Carr can likely deliver a completion percentage of 60 or better and a qb rating of over 80...just as he has generally done since 2004. That doesn't mean he is a good qb or that he will win games.

I think Singletary loses his job if he doesn't get rid of Smith.

Read this article, the offense is a mess. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=jc-directsnap091410
Drive 1: Start on Sea 29- 8 yd TD called back, FG.

Drive 2: Start on own 10- go for it on 4th and 1 on SEA 6- incomplete- 84 yard drive (without penalty aid)

Drive 3: Start on Sea 37 - get to the 6 yard line- kcik FG (SF actually got to SEA 1 before delay penalty put them on the 6)

SF looked fine starting the game, 2 picks for Tds (essentially) to end the first half/start the second are a serious problem, but they could have been up 17-7 rather than down 21-6 at those points in the game easily.

This. It does concern me as a fan to see the team just lose composure so quickly. Reminded me very much of last year's game against Atlanta, and it's frustrating at times because there are rarely times when the niners go into the locker room at halftime and make any positive adjustments. I love Singletary as a motivational coach, but as far as a tactician and strategy-wise, he needs a more creative mind on offense to succeed in today's NFL.

Yes, if this was the same David Carr who played for the Texans. However he actually looked fairly decent with the Giants behind Eli. EBF discussed this at length in some thread awhile ago, but his point was that Carr should be solid but unspectacular if he is called upon to be the signal caller.

:( at carr ever being solid. Alex smith sucks but carr is just horrible and always will be.

Smith has a very long leash.

Carr will take over late only if the season is a lost cause and the Niners are playing for "pride" (and Sing's job). It's one game and we haven't reached that point, yet. Personally, I don't think Carr will be much of a downgrade from Smith - we just need a QB that can hit a WR downfield once in a while and doesn't turn the ball over. That can't be that hard.

Troy Smith is an unknown and has gotten zero exposure.

I'm basing this on local articles, radio interviews, off-season puff pieces, and just basic observation about the Niners' QB moves (and lack of QB moves) this offseason.

Have you seen David Carr play?
There has never been anyone worse than David Carr. He's the definition of coward. It's 9 years now and he is still able to fool at least one GM into thinking he can play NFL level football. He can't. Troy Smith would give Carr a run for his money but no one can beat David Carr at QB suckage.Smith - Carr - Smith - Davis. You gotta be ####### kidding. Who is evaluating QB talent over there?

What he really needs to do is put Jimmy Raye out to pasture. The guy is probably sleeping right now during a practice.

I actually like the fact that Raye is still around. It's the first time Smith has had back to back years with the same OC and people who use that as an excuse to hide the fact that Alex Smith sucks can no longer use it.

They'll switch to the excuse that Jimmy Raye sucks.Incompetent leaders invest more in their failures than in their successes. That's exactly what the Niners leadership has done with Alex Smith. They're still unwilling to admit that they made a mistake.

Exactly. David Carr ripped off the Houston Texans for years becasue the organization always blamed someone else when he was the problem. No WR's, get Andre. Carr still sucks. Must be the lack of a running game. Dominik Davis emerges, Carr still sucks. Must be the OL. Upgrade OL, Carr still sucks. Fire head coach, Carr still sucks. See? I'm sure I even missed a few.

Think this is a short term attitude problem, or could Morgan be worth a look (assuming someone can get the ball to the WRs)?

Thanks for input from the homers. Based on the various links, it sounds like its a bigger mess than I realized. I'll let someone else play Russian Roulette with these guys

This. SF's NFL caliber QB is currently playing college ball. The draught continues for Niner fans. Sigh...
Oakland cut their mistake.Arizona cut their mistake. When will SF cut their mistake? Unfortunately, I don't think SF will make that move until after their 8th loss this year when the season is too late to salvage. Then they'll waste their more time with Carr.
