QB Vick Suuspended Indefinitely (1 Viewer)

Did Vick ever bet on the Falcons? If Vick is not convicted of slaughtering the dogs and also not betting on the dogs himself...what exactly is he being banned by the NFL for? Pete Rose bet on his own team that he managed...Vick didn't gamble along those lines did he? This isn't the Black Sox of the early 1900s exactly.I'm not defending Vick but I am questioning whether the punishment fits the crime.
Why do you hate America's dogs?
Because the ones I bet on always lose?

Also, how many people in here think those FF leagues we all play in for candy are legal?
What does that have to do with anything concerning the Vick case?
Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones...ever hear that one? Lot of people in here that obviously take part in a form of illegal gambling(because I know Uncle Sam ain't getting a cut from all the Tostitios everyone wins) seem to be wanting to put themselves above Vick. I have only read that Vick did not admit to killing the dogs himself or actually placing bets, is that true or false? Don't just refer to Goodell...did Vick admit to killing the dogs and placing the bets himself?I'm not saying he doesn't deserve to go to jail and be suspended by the NFL...but I am trying to see what he is actually going to be sentenced on and what other precedents in not only the NFL but other major sports might have an impact on this.

I didn't sign an agreement with my employer stating that while employed I would not take part in illegal gambling.

I'm just saying Ahrn that a lot of people in here are involved in some form of illegal gambling...people like to prop themselves up and feel part of something bigger by putting down a guy that made $120 million+

Exactly.Oh and by the way. Fantasy sports were decared NOT a form of gambling by a House of Representatives bill that passed last year.
I think that might only apply to the big companies like CBS Sports...I don't think it applies to people that throw down 250 bones for a 12 team redraft at the local level...does that make sense?Example: In California it is illegal to play poker for money in your house...but you can go to Commerce and play legally...and that's a game with chance and skill involved.

The bill specifically exempts fantasy sports games, educational games, or any online contest that, "has an outcome that reflects the relative knowledge of the participants, or their skill at physical reaction or physical manipulation (but not chance), and, in the case of a fantasy or simulation sports game, has an outcome that is determined predominantly by accumulated statistical results of sporting events, including any non-participant's individual performances in such sporting events..."

While we are all "gambling" without licenses to do so, we are not running gambling rings using defenseless dogs, cats, chickens, people, etc. to further finance our hobby. Plus, we all are not running through thousands of dollars in order to gamble. Big difference between 12 people paying a set amount of money to have an enjoyable season instead of what Vick has done. I do hope you notice the difference.

Yes he did admit to it all.VICK ADMITS EVERYTHING

We've reviewed in detail the plea agreement signed by Michael Vick on Thursday, along with the statement of facts.

Notwithstanding the anonymous source who told the anonymous reporter at ESPN that Vick would not admit to killing dogs or to gambling, Vick admits to everything.

In paragraph 1, Vick pleads guilty to conspiracy to establish, maintain, etc. an interstate gambling enterprise and conspiracy to engage in interstate dog fighting.

In paragraph 2, Vick admits that the Surry County property to which he initially said he never goes was the main staging area for housing and training pit bulls for fighting.

In paragraph 3, Vick admits to being involved in dog fights at the Surry County property, and to participating in dog fights in other states.

In paragraph 4, Vick admits that the enterprise involved gambling activities in violation of Virginia law. Vick denies that he placed side bets on any fights, or that he received process from the purses. (However, he admits that he was the primary source of funds for the operation. If the winnings went only to his co-defendants, then that's less money Vick had to give them to get them to continue to tend to the operation while he was "at work" for the Atlanta Falcons.)

In paragraph 9, Vick admits that he began acquiring dogs for the operation in "2001-2002," and that the "Bad Newz Kennels" were established in 2002.

In paragraph 12, Vick admits that he knew the other defendants "killed a number of dogs" that did not perform well in testing sessions in 2002. Vick denies killing any dogs at that time.

In paragraph 32, Vick admits that in April 2007 -- the same month in which he say face-to-face with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and denied that dog fighting was occurring on his land -- he agreed with Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips to kill six-to-eight dogs that did not perform well in testing sessions. Here's the key passage:

"[A]ll of those dogs were killed by various methods, including hanging and drowning. VICK agrees and stipulates that these dogs all died as a result of the collective efforts of PEACE, PHILLIPS, and VICK."

More precedentFantasy Leagues Not Gambling, District Judge Rules

By Rafat Ali - Mon 25 Jun 2007 06:08 PM PST

Premium fantasy sports leagues does not constitute illegal gambling, according to a ruling in a court case decided in the New Jersey District Court. The ruling by Judge Dennis Cavanaugh dismisses a suit brought by a lawyer turned professional gambler who sued several large operators of fantasy sports leagues, including Viacom, CBS Corp., the Walt Disney Co., ESPN and the Sporting News, reports THREsq.

The lawsuit was filed in June 2006 by Charles Humphrey who claimed that these companies operated illegal pay-for-play online fantasy sports leagues whose registration fees constituted wagers. He claimed he was entitled to recover as gambling losses all of the individual entry fees paid by participants in fantasy sport leagues he alleged were illegal.

The judge dismissed the case on procedural ground, among other things. Also, he talked about the bigger picture: “As a matter of law, the entry fees for Defendants’ fantasy sports leagues are not ‘bets’ or ‘wagers’ because (1) the entry fees are paid unconditionally; (2) the prizes offered to fantasy sports contestants are for amounts certain and are guaranteed to be awarded; and (3) Defendants do not compete for the prizes.”

Not running gambling rings? What do you think the Commisioner does in all these leagues? Collects the money, distributes the money, runs the thing...seems similar in ways to me. Why did you bring up cats, chickens and people? And there are plenty of people that run through more than just a few dollars so they can be in multiple leagues and redrafts every year.Again, I'm not saying what Vick did was OK on any level, but I also think people go a little overboard.

Goddel Translation

» "Your admitted conduct was not only illegal, but also cruel and reprehensible. Your team, the NFL, and NFL fans have all been hurt by your actions."
I regert drafting you in my fantasy team»
"Your plea agreement and the plea agreements of your co-defendants also demonstrate your significant involvement in illegal gambling. Even if you personally did not place bets, as you contend, your actions in funding the betting and your association with illegal gambling both violate the terms of your NFL Player Contract and expose you to corrupting influences in derogation of one of the most fundamental responsibilities of an NFL player."
I'm upset you did not include me in as an investment partner
» "You have engaged in conduct detrimental to the welfare of the NFL and have violated the league’s Personal Conduct Policy."
You did not share you winnings with others
» "I will review the status of your suspension following the conclusion of the legal proceedings. As part of that review, I will take into account a number of factors, including the resolution of any other charges that may be brought against you, whether in Surry County, Virginia, or other jurisdictions, your conduct going forward, the specifics of the sentence imposed by Judge Hudson and any related findings he might make, and the extent to which you are truthful and cooperative with law enforcement and league staff who are investigating these matters."
Bend over
» "I have advised the Falcons that, with my decision today, they are no longer prohibited from acting and are now free to assert any claims or remedies available to them under the Collective Bargaining Agreement or your NFL
I said, BEND OVER
Actually, that part comes in prison.
Goodell wanted to get him while he was still a virgin. Seriously, I think Vick will be segregated during the entire time. They don't want him getting whacked while he is in federal custody.

It is disgusting and I understand why people hate Vick as a person...but as a player is where I still have some strong opinions. Again thanks for posting this.

Again, he also signed an agreement with his employer stating he would not engage in this activity.
OK, but I don't sign anything with my employer stating I won't kill dogs for fun...does that mean I can go out and do it? OF COURSE NOT! Why did they make Vick sign that in the 1st place?

All NFL players sign it. It's called a Collective Bargaining Agreement. And the Perswonal Conduct Code.
