QB/WR Hook-ups (1 Viewer)

Domination

Footballguy
This has been an ongoing discussion with some of my league mates and I.

Our league has bonuses for longer touchdowns, but yardage scoring is minimal.

Do you target or avoid possible QB/WR hook-ups? I am not talking about 2nd rate players, Hasselback to BMW. I mean stud QB & stud WR, or even a stud and his top available option....Manning/Wayne.

If so, who would you think would be hook-ups that you would target?

One last question, as it something I am currently mulling over....Does the possibility of trading a player that would give the other person a hook-up effect your opinion of making a trade or not?

My opinion...I have seen the advantages and disadvantages of both, as they could very easily carry your team on any given week. But if your tandem has a bad week, I have seen strong teams get taken down, especially in the playoffs. I think no matter how good your pair is, it still comes with a high boom/bust chance.

Seems like Matt Ryan to Roddy White would be pretty good. I tried to get White earlier in the season (since I have Ryan) but the owner wouldn't budge. Plus I'm in a start 2QB league.

If you hit on the right pair, it's money. You probably won your league if you had Manning/Harrison or Manning/Wayne in 05', or Brady/Moss in 07'.

If the QB gets hurt, you basically lose the WR that you paid a 1st or 2nd round pick for. Imagine being the guy who drafted Brady & Moss in 08' You lose Brady Week 1 and Moss becomes a WR3, season over.

if you use a lesser WR as the combo (say manning /garcon) then you assume less risk.

this works good especially if you award points for longer TDs.

big ben/wallace

cutler/knox

palmer/TO

also this works for the QB/TE combo good and maybe with less risk.

if the QB was injured, the backup QB looks for the TE more in some cases.

personally, I have never tried to use a QB/WR combo.

if I did it was by accident.

I usually draft BPA and would look to avoid similiar bye weeks.

I had Brady/Moss last year and I think they combined for something like 10 points in Week 14 (play-offs wk1) for me. Needless to say, I lost.

That said, I believe they did explode in Week 16 so if I could've made it there I would've been set.

They were my 1st and 2nd round picks in this league so they were a pretty important part of my team. When they threw up a stinker, I didn't have much else to make up for it. Having a combo that costs you a lot less could be more beneficial because you're more likely to be able to make up for it with strong players at other positions. Something like Rivers/Gates could've been had for 4th-5th rounders this year and is absolutely money.

get the best available player
This, also why put all your eggs in one basket? I have both Andre Johnson and Arien Foster and neither texan did much the week they faced the Giants. It would have been better that week if I had two players from different teams. Different positions but you get my point.

While in agreement with most of you...

Would it hinder you in trading a player away to someone who would be acquiring the "hookup", or would it effect eh price you were asking?

On the reverse, would it effect the price that you are willing to pay?

I'm starting Ben & Wallace in one league and Vick & Maclin in another this week. And while, I didn't draft this way, I was able to acquire both QBs from the FA list and am tentatively hopeful. Because let's face it, it could end horribly.

I drafted Brady/Moss this season. I didn't reach for either, just took them in the right spot when they fell to me. before the season, I was feeling pretty good about it.

now...not so much.

I don't go out of my way to acquire it but I won't turn down value because it would leave me with a qb/wr from the same team.

I mostly just go with the best player available and I think this is the best way to go the vast majority of the time. If it makes you uncomfortable, just try to trade one of them away for a player that is close.

If the players are close and I am having a hard time deciding, then I might take this into consideration. In this situation, I will tend to go with the players on the same team (especially QB/WR) if I think I am at a disadvantage against my opponent and need a big week. Alternatively, if I think I am the favourite I will tend to make the "safer" play and play the players on different teams.
