Queen Elizabeth passes away. (1 Viewer)

She's seen some stuff. Twitter seems to indicate leaders on the house of commons floor have been given the London bridge plans which are basically the mourning plans. So sounds like it's happening very soon.

English royalty need to go away.

We should not care.

She is famous because of who she was born too, not for any accomplishment.

I just assumed most here in the States don’t care. If the English want to have some royal family I don’t give a crap. I too find it weird but there’s a lot more weird other places do. I would suggest it be total figurehead and not quasi.

I'm really only familiar with the House of Windsor. Other countries have royalty who are much more in the background. Ruling monarchies are very rare. But I suppose because we share a common language and they are our closest ally we are more aware of British Royalty.

List of current royal families in Europe:

  • The House of Saxe-Coburg and Gothas - Belgium (King Philippe)
  • The House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg - Denmark (Queen Margrethe II)
  • The House of Liechtenstein - Liechtenstein (Prince Hans-Adam II)*
  • The House of Luxembourg-Nassau - Luxembourg - Grand Duke Henri
  • The House of Grimaldi - Monaco (Prince Albert II)*
  • The House of Orange-Nassau - Netherlands (King Willem-Alexander)
  • The House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg - Norway - (King Harald V)
  • The House of Borbón-Anjou - Spain (King Felipe VI)
  • The House of Bernadotte - Sweden (King Carl XVI Gustaf)
  • The House of Windsor - United Kingdom (Queen Elizabeth II)
*ruling monarchy

I think I know more about the Thai Royal family than the first nine on that list. OK, Prince Albert II bc of Grace Kelly and the Olympics. But still, don't know the first thing about the other 8 houses.

One of the oddest things about Buckingham Palace is Australia, Canada and New Zealand all recognize her as their Queen.

Pretty much this. It’s odd to me that the American public has so much interest in all of the family.

She’d win me over if she dressed up one of her dogs in a funny dragon costume and posted a video saying “See…I have a dragon too!!!”

Our entire marriage/wedding history/industry is based on people copying the Windsors, down to the absurd white gowns, play acting as royalty. Just incredibly wasteful, expensive and pointless.

All for people that end up divorced a year or two later. And no matter how nice I ask, they never return my wedding gift.

The amount of ink spilt onto trash rags that festoon every cashier's station of every store in this country dedicated to all the comings and goings of the royal family in another country we waged war against to get out from under thumb centuries ago will forever boggle my mind. But then again, I can't understand the fascination with the Kardashians, Steven A. Smith, Skip Bayless, that whacko Ball father....just....don't get it. And I never will.

And yet, here I am.

It's not odd at all to me. Those nations are all still part of the Commonwealth. We hear about her more because she is the monarch of an English speaking nation and our most close nation allies, as you allude to above.

Obviously the English monarchy is just a figure head. One could debate if the national pride it embiggens is worth the expense. I suppose we have already decided on this matter in the US, so I don't get the tabloid obsession here as much. Those other countries have also chosen to maintain this special tie.

Still, it's sad when a long time global leader passes. I've never seen anything particularly negative about her personally. I've always liked this photo of her coronation. She looks so young and has been in that seat for so long.

Sure thing, octo-dad... . ;)

I hope she passes without pain and suffering. But I do have to note that it's hard to look at Princes Charles and Andrew and conclude that QEII was Mother of the Year.

What are her career highlights/achievements? Was she an altruistic person who made the world a better place? I guess I could research it, but figured I'd ask in here.

Where to begin?

In all seriousness, Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other realms and territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith’s biggest accomplishments were likely the modernizing (although maybe not enough for todays world) of the Monarchy itself, and quite simply keeping the British “empire” intact following the war, if only as a Commonwealth.

The Monarchy itself nearly didn’t survive her uncle abdicating the throne less than a year into his reign, followed by her own father being unprepared for the title - and by the time he was ready and able to do so, dying at a fairly young age passing the title to her at only 25.

The “Empire” nearly collapsed entirely following the war, and it’s nowhere close to what it was when she started (when about a quarter of the landmass of the world was part of it). Now, the Commonwealth has 54 member states - all voluntary sovereign nations. Allowing and overseeing each one of these totally peaceful transitions weakened her own title to a point where her title is really only ceremonial. Compare that to the fall/decline/abrupt end of other empires in history.

It helps a lot to think of Queen Elizabeth II as an ambassador and not as a ruler or a lawmaker. Then her career in public service makes more sense. A lot of tension-breaking and smoothing paths for others.

The BBC obituary is worth the read for anyone truly unacquainted with her life. It's not short, but it's not a bad 10-minute skim/read.

EDIT: Forgot obit link

So is he the king immediately? Or is it some long process?
Immediately. He’ll have a ceremony later, but the transfer is immediate.

Also, for those interested in the titles - Camilla is now Queen consort. That will rub some folks the wrong way.

Ascending to the throne (accession) and formal coronation are two different things. The coronation is pure ceremony and can take place many months after a person has become king/queen.

Elizabeth II accessed the throne while out of the country upon her father's death in February 1952. Her coronation was in June 1953.
