Question for Rock music fans (1 Viewer)

I'm not a rock music fan at all, and my knowledge of the genre is quite limited.

But I was curious as to how casual rock fans felt about 80s rock compared to 60s/70s rock, which (from my understanding) is considered the heydey of the genre.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 80s rock differed significantly from 60s/70s rock. It seemed during the 80s there was a "hair metal" type thing going, the groups had big hair and wore tight jeans. I think more emphasis was placed on the electric guitar.

I'll use "White Snake" as an example. How do they compare to bands such as AC/DC, Chicago, Led Zeppelin & Queen?

And what of your "television shows?" I have come to understand that shows in the 50's featured women that baked cakes, men who worked at "offices" and a lot of lawn-mowing. It seemed during the 90's, shows ended up being more about "friends" in "cities." I'll use "Seinfeld" as an example. How does it compare to Leave it to Beaver or My Three Sons? Your world frightens and confuses me.

I think this will be a generation thing..

Born in 1967 myself I didn't get into the "Rock" scene until the 80's so of course, for me, the 80's were the best :headbang:

The problem with the 80s was the advent of cable television and MTV so everyone producing music was wanting to do it in an avant garde straight to video production. Every middle school and high school kid had MTV on lockdown. Some decent music was still generated in the 80s, but much of it was lost to the sugar coated pop. As for me I would rank it 70s>60s>90s>>>>>>80s>2000+

Foghat is universally known to be the best and most influential band of all time, so start with them. Once you've given Foghat's catalog a few listens, all the other eras of rock will make sense.

I love 80s rock, but not the hair metal BS. More New-Wave and Punk influenced like Elvis Costello and Talking Heads. The 70s got as ridiculous as the 80s got though. Just look at KISS.

Kind of agree - REM, The Cure, The Police - all of those were the rage in my 80s college days.

The '80s were all about finding a successful formula and then beating it to death. The record labels didn't have time to let an artist develop organically -- it was all about creating an instant image and then marketing it until it was no longer popular.

The "hair band" fad of the '80s had parallels to the disco fad of the late '70s. Both genres took elements of earlier forms of music (classic rock/60's funk) and sanitized it for the masses.

Overall the quality of 80's rock is far inferior.

But in that decade many new genres were created, so there was an upside to the crazy 80's

if we expand the genre of "Rock" to include what might be widely accepted as "Heavy Metal" [and it's related sub-genres] then the 80s were the cutting edge for that type of music.

if we're sticking to a more traditional definition of "Rock" then i'd say the 80s lags behind the 70s in terms of quality, though many of the non-US bands were at the top of their game during the 80s (U2, The Police, The Cult, etc.).

This & too many synth players taking over their bands.

70s rock is really overrated IMO.
Lumping together one of the most diverse decades in music history is pretty myopic.
People categorize by decade all the time. This whole thread is about categorizing rock music by decade.
I suppose, which causes too much generalization in these threads.
I agree. I love lots of 70s rock, the much of the mainstream "classic rock" of the decade is awful IMO.
