Longest length of touchdown scores, 1940-2009, rushing: (i.e., a player with rushing touchdown lengths of 20, 14, 3 and 2 yards would have a total length of touchdown scores of 39). I've included scores from the NFL, AFL and AAFC, and the post-season as well as the regular season:

Unless I'm just not seeing him, I'm amazed DeSean Jackson didn't make the list for what he did this past year. I'd have guessed he was in the top-10.

ETA: Only 410 yards for DeSean. Color me surprised.

I had a similar reaction; I knew that Jackson had some return TDs, but I don't think I put 2 and 2 together; he had two PRs and one rushing TD of over 65 yards. So a third of Jackson's TDs of 40-yards or longer weren't receiving touchdowns.

Not at all surprised to see Tomlinson, Alexander, Emmitt Smith, and Larry Johnson towards the bottom of the "yard per TD" lists (and Priest Holmes' record-setting TD season has to rate even lower in ypTD to not make the list). Those were all guys who got a ton of TDs because they were option 1, 2, 3a, 3b, and 5 at the goal line. Which isn't meant as a criticism so much as it's meant as a comment on their usage.

I was really surprised to see MJD's 2009 season checking in at over 20 yards per TD, though. I expected to see him way down with Tomlinson and Emmitt. I guess I just didn't realize how infrequently the Jags made it into the red zone last year. Imagine what his TD totals would have looked like if the Jags weren't so terrible on offense.

On the other end of the scale, Riggins' 30 rushing TDs in 1983 (including playoffs) totaled only 90 yards. He had TDs of 14, 15, and 17 yards. All other TDs were 4 yards or less.

as an MJD owner, my thoughts exactly... here's to them turning it on next season... maybe?

He ranks poorly when sorted by yards, but right near the top when sorted by clouds of dust.
