Quick question re: fellow owner and FBG.com (1 Viewer)

Are any of you in leagues where fellow owners also use FBG and the DD as their primary fantasy info? If so, are they aware that you use this site? The reason I ask this question is that I've been using FBG for probably 6 years now and I know full well that no one else in my league uses this site (this fact has always shocked me). Anyway, my best friend is in two separate leagues with me and he was telling me a couple weeks ago that he's been trying to find the same draft software that I use (the DD) and hasn't been able to. We had a draft last friday together I think he got a good look at the screen of my laptop, since he emailed me Monday morning asking how much i pay for my site. I lied and told him I only pay $20 and he responded by saying he found a site that had draft software that looked just like mine, but the site was $25.95. Lo and behold, he finally found this site. I reiterated that I do not pay that amount as a means of trying to get him to continue his search. Am I being an ### by being so possessive? Or do I have a right to protect my source of info? In my firned's defense, I do not think he understands that the DD is a draft tool, rather than just a means of organizing draft day info electronically, rather than crossing off a list on paper. I'm not trying to scare off potential FBG customers, as I pimp this site to anyone that isn't in a money league with me, but I just don't like the fact that a league member could have the same info I have at my drafts.

I woudl love if EVERY owner in my league had the DD. Because then I would know their "cheatsheet" since most people just run off the projections here. Then I know if I want a player, where most are going to grab him. I think it woudl give ME an advantage. Plus, it enhances the "skill" level IMO.

Good call. You have me thinking I should change my tune. Glass is half full, not half empty.

:goodposting: knowing who uses the DD at WCOFF gives me a nice advantage...the vast majority of people who use it are too lazy to change anything and i can pretty much pick who they'll pick round by round. use that info to draft circles around them.

Not everyone has the time to go thru 500 some players and put in their own projections for each. If you (and countless others) do, God bless.

 i actually only project for 64 QBs, 96 RBs, 128 WRs, 64 TEs, 32 PKs, and 32 DTs (416 total).it's actually not time consuming at all now that i have set it up. just download stats from drinen's site and eveything automatically updates historical performance, and then you just need to make tweaks based off that.since the end of last season, a couple hundred hours isn't that much time (8 months).but the DD is a great tool for those who do not like excel or don't have (or don't want to spend) time on it. however, unless you make your own changes, you leave your projections open for all to see. that is not good.

Plus you assume that you know something more than the guys who do this full-time all-the-time.

Maybe you do, but maybe you don't.

I'm in leagues that were formed wholly from guys in this forum, and in leagues where only 1-2 other guys even know about FBG. Neither the Draft Dominator or the FBG site is a magic pill, and some of the non-FBG guys draft very well while some of the FBG guys are horrible.

Judgment still takes precedence over the DD tool, as even DD creator Bruce Henderson will tell you.

Judgment is required to utilize the information at the site too. All 14 members of my 5 leagues formed from FBG guys are privy to the same info, but hold widely different preferences, styles, and beliefs in many cases (just as FBG staff and FBG message boarders do). I wouldn't hide FBG from leaguemates. I'd welcome the challenge of beating them anyway.

If you are confident in your own skill and ability as a fantasy football player then you will not care who knows what sources you use.

I was in a recent draft with mostly non-FBG guys, but there were a couple of owners I could tell were using the DD. I used it to help project how upcoming picks may go (drafting other teams using ADP for non-DD guys, DD suggested picks for DD guys), and it served as a pretty good predictor. I don't let it choose my picks because I have my own projections and judgment systems, but it does provide good food for thought toward determining those picks. Those who simply draft from DD will be in trouble, but for those who know how to use it, it can be very useful.

This is exactly how I feel. I don't have any problems sharing where I get my tools for the draft.

Couch,

I fully agree with the role judgement plays. I guess I've always considered "gut feeling" to be my calling card when drafting. I've never made my own projections on paper, but in my mind I know which FBG projections I agree with and which ones I don't based on the news available from training camps/preseason games.

Thanks to everyone who has replied, I'm a big time lurker around here, but rarely ever "talk." I appreciate the time you took to help out.

I knew this was coming. Thanks. :D Bagger,I was going to ask if you had any tips on forming projections, so thanks for the info, I'll keep it in mind for next year.
there were a few threads on this earlier in the year. however, real briefly i think a lot of people start out with team projections providing you constraints with how to projects individuals on those teams. this keeps yardage and TDs in check between QBs and WRs. i personally use a weighted average over the past 3 years with 50% to last year, 35% to two years ago, and 15% to 3 years ago. i then adjust the projections up or down depending on situation.if you use drinen's profootballreference.com, you can download stats from prior years, and using array formulas input a player's ID and the formulas will automatically pick up historical stats. this is a big time saver. i then have a couple different scoring formats set up to convert the stats into fantasy points and a toggle between the two. all players are sorted by fantasy points (one tab for all players, and then each position also has its own tab). i also have average points scored by position info to cross check my projections against historical AVT. some people like maurile don't find that worthwhile, while i do. to me this makes sure that whoever i have projected as RB14, is within a standard deviation one way or the other of what a RB14 has scored in the past.the best part about doing that is that it again gives you a check and balance to not overproject for all players. the dropoffs i have for players is in the realm of being historically accurate. i also have a spot for # of games and PPG as that is good info to see, as well as ADP info that i pull in from antsports.it can seem overwhelming at first, especially if you aren't too proficient at excel. however there are a lot of people here who are happy to share their tools with people to give you a head start on building the excel model.

:lmao: You better get used to it, because in a year or 2 everyone will be drafting off of this type of software.Come on man, do your own homework.
