Quinn could start in DEN? (1 Viewer)

Saw the article below this morning and immediately considered it smoke. But given Orton could be traded and Tebow may have more situational value in Fox's schemes, maybe it isn't so far-fetched?

Or just more fodder for the veterans to consider while locked out?

John Elway, John Fox say Brady Quinn could be Broncos’ starter

With so much talk in Denver this offseason about whether Tim Tebow or Kyle Orton will be the Broncos’ starter, a third contender has been largely overlooked: Brady Quinn.

Chris Mortensen said on ESPN Radio this morning that Broncos front office boss John Elway and head coach John Fox have both told him that Quinn has a real chance of earning the starting job in Denver.

“I can tell you unequivocally that if you talk to John Elway and John Fox,” Mortensen said, “they will tell you emphatically that Brady Quinn is absolutely in the mix in terms of the competition for the starting job. They are not handing it to Tim Tebow. They are not handing it to Kyle Orton. They may have a depth chart to start out, but I know in communicating and speaking to both men that Brady Quinn is not forgotten.”

Everyone seems to agree that Tebow is the favorite, and it’s more likely than not that Orton will be traded once the lockout ends. But the quarterback situation in Denver is still up in the air, and every quarterback on the roster is still in the mix.

We heard that a coach that didn't believe in Tebow was not the right fit for the Broncos. We have heard that Tebow is not an Elway guy and that they will look to draft one.We have heard that Orton is the starter. We have heard that Tebow is the starter and the future. We heard Tebow might not start. We head that he might actually start. Now we are hearing that Brady freaking Quinn is in the mix?I like these articles coming out. I am an off-season buyer.

I'm very, very impressed with Elway so far.
I am finding it very interesting that a guy, who as a player, would have freaked if his team brought in someone better than a Bubby Brister-type to back him up, is jerking his QBs around so much.Denver homers: Was he particularly warming to Tommy Maddux when he was drafted?

I don't believe one word that comes out of Elway's mouth. Who knows what really swirling in his mind, but this latest notion seems pretty ridiculous.

I really don't think so. But remember they picked Maddox to replace him when he was still pretty much in his prime and took Maddox instead of Carl Pickens. It was Dan Reeves way of forcing the issue of moving Elway or firing him since they practically hated each other by that point. Also if Elway had a QB with the obvious talents of, let's say, a young Elway no way he is jerking them around. But he has Kyle "freaking average" Orton, Brady "just freaking" Quinn, and that Tim Tebow guy. A QB that deserves not to be jerked with is not among them. As a Bronco fan I hope Tebow turns into that guy but we will see.

I'm not really sure what's going on here. All that's being said is that Quinn will be in the mix to compete. It doesn't even say there's a guarantee that Quinn will get a minimum amount of practice time with the first string, just that Quinn will be allowed to compete.

yeah?

I think the only thing you should take away from this is that Elway wants it known that nothing is for granted. Whereas I think that's a worthy arrow in his quiver for many players, I think the only thing we can say for sure about Tebow is that he's not lacking in motivation. If Elway did this with Cam Newton on his team, I might think, "he's just trying to make sure Newton doesn't come in as an entitled diva", I don't see how that line of rhetoric really helps in Denver. I don't know that it hurts either, but ultimately it strikes me as lip service.

As a somewhat unwilling Tebow owner, I've been following this situation closely, and it seems like every time Elway opens his mouth, some reporter is looking to break a story.

Here's what I see: a new regime that is not willing to publicly annoint or exclude any one of their QB's from competition until such a time as they feel it is in their best interest to do so.

It seems like common sense from a business perspective, and how it can be considered "news" eludes me.

Based on all the info I've seen, it sounds like they would LIKE Tebow to be that guy, but know he still has work to do. In the meantime, they have two other QB's who they want to evaluate and push him - as potential starters, to motivate him, or to exhibit value for trade.
