Other: Bill Cosby

Rape allegations aside, he has contributed 50+ years of comedy to our culture that people across the racial divide have found funny, showing that we have more in common than we think, that we're more than just the enviornment in which we live.

Other other: Richard Pryor

Another comedian whose material was unversally relatable.

Pretty tough to set those aside. I do miss my unsullied image, my memory of him from the time prior to the allegations.

The key years for racial relations to improve in this country were around 1945-1970. Any politician, celebrity or athlete that was prominent during that era is going to be more significant than anyone after. Thus, Jackie Robinson and MLK are far more important than Barack Obama. Obama's achievement of being elected is extremely significant, but it came in the post civil rights era when most advancement had already been accomplished.

Now many conservatives believe that President Obama has actually weakened race relations in this country, made them worse than they were before. I strongly dispute this.

I did not put MLK or Jackie Robinson in the poll for two reasons. First, they would have run away with it, IMO. Second, had they not run away with it I would have been so thoroughly disgusted I might have written something ungentlemanly and gotten myself permabanned, again.

And I thought I started bad threads.
You do. Its why I am a huge fan of yours. There is a zen quality to the badness of the threads you start. Me, I'm going more for a Jungian universal archetype badness to mine. I want folks to feel a sense of familiarity, if not deja vu for the inherent crappiness of my threads. I think I have achieved that. Thanks for noticing.

Say what you want, but thanks to this thread I've had an epiphany about "race relations".

Apologies in advance to the haters for referencing The Big Bang Theory, but to me, race relations at this point is like the dynamic between Leonard and Penny early on in that show, in that Leonard would overanalyze everything that Penny said/did and would obsess about identifying their relationship. It feels to me now like one 'side' prefers to nitpick and try to 'fix' every little thing and the other 'side' prefers to just go along as things happen and deal with them as they occur.

No Martin Luther King Jr????

That's my choice.
Presumptive winner by a landslide, so not included. I deliberately left out Jackie Robinson as well. Other omissions, and I am sure many can come to light, were not intentional so much as simply not caring to structure some comprehensive list of known black people.

Perhaps you, or some other person who likes making comprehensive lists of the 100 most on any subject could tackle that. Oprah, Bobby Sands. BB Albert and Freddy King. Donna Summer, Rosa Parks, Tommy Smith, Ali, ....

I think it has to be an athlete or entertainer given the current situation of race relations. Politics in the US is by nature divisive given our two party system and even good natured attempts at race related fixes/legislation actions will always be met with arguments on a better solution(s).

Fixing things long term will be cultural, not legislated, so that, to me, excludes politicians and political figures and highlights entertainers and athletes which seem to solicit greater empathy from the masses. (Ex. Before Jackie Robinson, the whole country cheered Jesse Owens embarrassing Hitler's athletes as Jesse united the country to cheer for an American)

For me it was sports. I played sports at an early age and all that mattered or who you wanted on your team were good players. The color of those players did not matter at all. Play grounds rule.

One could make an interesting list of sports figures who followed Jackie Robinson's legacy. Hell the list could include sport's figures who proceeded and introduced that legacy as well. Jesse Owens, Joe Lewis, Dizzy Dean, Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Ali, Magic, Michael, Larry Holmes, Walter Payton, Arthur Ashe, Tiger, the Williams Sisters, Debi Thomas, Brianna Scurry, Gabby Douglas, Dominique Dawes.

Here would be a list that could exceed 100 quite readily. Sports and entertainment both engrain themselves deeply in our conscience.

I bet you have that token so you can sleep at night.
This is like your own personal 'Jerk Store' moment and you're going to lose sleep over not making a better joke when the opportunity presented itself.
Umm it wasn't a joke.
Damn! So not only do you suck at being funny, you suck at being serious too?

Good thing you have a hood to hide under.

But I was right about your token I bet. It probably helps you fit in with the other losers you keep company with.

I voted Jesse Jackson. I think hes a bit of a mix bag, but the winner of this poll.
Damn, I should have gotten you as an option up quicker. I wonder would you have voted for yourself. I also wonder, having gone for the Rhymin Reverend over yourself, will that humility drive votes your way. I think maybe it should.

So this supposed 'token' is automatically a loser....

Why am I not surprised that you assume this?

Oops, history. Did a tiff cross into a new thread? With no background on this other than the poster names I am going to go with Limp Ditka. Solid contributor, always.

Not surprising that a mouth breather like you is easily confused.

Nobody puts Sammy in the corner. If that was his presumption I am going to be apoplectic.

vote changed to Fennis Dembo
And you are not the only one. He is making a push here. I feel I am to blame for him not being higher. Obviously I should have included him earlier.
