Each State's Best IPA Beer - Value, Drinkability, Taste and Artwork (1 Viewer)

If anyone has any other red IPAs to recommend please let me know.
I don't know if they make it any longer, but Founders used to make Red's Rye. One of my all time favs. Alaskan Brewing also made an Imperial Red 22oz bomber with a crab on the label...but I don't know if they make that any longer. I love a good balanced Red IPA. I actually think Furious from Surly has a bit of a touch of red ipa to it.

My favorite style of IPA besides west coast is black ipas or cascadian dark ales (that's what we call them out here). Wookey Jack from Firestone was one of the best ever but I think they stopped making that as well.

I don't think Fat Tire is made anymore, but that was the beer of choice for @Judge Smails legendary chili. Not my favorite beer to drink, but it did its job in his recipe with the sweetness to it. I'll now go with Alaskan Amber as a substitute. Not even sure if Deschutes still makes their Red Chair NWPA but I used that too.

Breakside had a black IPA on tap recently and it was really good.

Breakside also has an offering right now called "Dime Bag IPA" made with weed terpene. I ordered one recently and it smells precisely like a bag of marijuana. Not my favorite beer of theirs but kind of a neat novelty. We need to fling discs and hit the Beaverton Breakside next time the weather is right.
You ever make it to Backwoods? They have good beer, and food. Nice cozy atmosphere in the Pearl. Their Logyard IPA is delicious. I believe their place of origin is Carson Washington

Not yet, but I just looked and they have one in Hillsboro (I like free parking) and guess what? I might actually have plans this weekend afterall! That food menu looks terrific. Thanks for this!

Speaking of Dogfish 120 Minute I will tell the story about my encounter with it - we go to Delaware beaches every summer and one year way back in the early 2000s my brother-in-law asked if we would pick up some Dogfish to send to him in Boston

I was pretty new into beer then, went to the old original Dogfish brewery and picked up what he wanted, which included some 120 Minute, plus got some for myself. I got back to our house and decided to try the 120 - my memory is that it was in something like an 18 oz bottle. Definitely bigger than a 12 oz bottle

Since it was a hot day, I drank the whole thing pretty quickly and then within 30 or 45 minutes I had the funniest feeling. I was in a great mood and laughing at everything and couldn't figure out why I felt so unusual but good. The reason, of course, was that I was absolutely hammered which I only figured out later. It's one of only 2 times* in my life when someone slipped me a mickey and got me totally trashed without me knowing it was happening

* the other time was when my wife made a pitcher of margaritas and substituted cups for ounces in the recipe. We each had a couple before dinner, plus one more during and couldn't get up from the table

First up tonight...

Breakside Thriving Metropolis IPA #2

We brewed this West Coast IPA with our new buds from Ghost Town Brewing in Oakland:

Justin, Jason, Jamison, Johannes, Jurgen, Juan, Jose, Juan Pablo, and Jerry. Just joshin’.

But seriously, all of their names started with J and they are serious hop lovers, and it was a no-brainer to combine some of our approaches to making IPA with theirs. We leaned heavy on their preference for Pilsner malt, minimal kettle hopping, and their love of the yet-unnamed hop HBC 586. We brought to the table our preferred lots of Cashmere and Simcoe, as well as our predilection for using small charges of Southern Hemisphere hops in the whirlpool and dry hop. Our approach of layering dry hops adds to the mellifluous and broad flavor profile in this beer: expect notes of dried apricot, lime, strawberry. Hawaiian punch, and pineapple whip with a soft, just-so bitterness in the finish. This is modern West Coast IPA in rare form– you’ll find no Citra nor Mosaic here — but we promise that the Ghost Town and Breakside crews brought their J-game…we mean A-game, to this expressive and aromatic banger.

FLAVOR PROFILE:

Dried Apricot, Lime, Strawberry, Hawaiian Punch

Ghost Town has been putting out some good beers lately. I wasn't big on them when they first started, but they're either growing on me or they are refining their craft.

Breakside is a brewery I'd like to try more of. I can find Wanderlust down here, which is always solid

Love Ghost Town

So what IPA is everyone going to drink tonight?
Didn't have anything on Friday night, but I did have a couple of hazy IPAs from Melvin Brewing (Wyoming) at my favorite dive in SoCal on Saturday. Real good hazy... forget the name, will check and report back this weekend.

SHOOT! I forgot all about Wyoming AND Montana. I am qualified to opine here and YES, Melvin Brewing is outstanding. Thanks friend, I now have something to look forward to tomorrow. :)

which place do you go to? When I'm visiting and sports are on then I go to my place in HB but I need to venture to more dives when I'm down there.

I was born/raised in Costa Mesa, so a lot of the local spots I go to are there. My dive is called The Huddle (about a couple miles south of South Coast Plaza right off the 405 and Bristol). Great spot to watch sports, shoot pool, throw darts and listen to music.

Where in HB do you usually go?

haha, it's literally called "my place". For dives I'll hit the boon docks (we own the bldg), Clancy's or the irisher in down town seal or head over to long beach and stop by Joe Jost's. Although I've become a bit of a snob in the evenings and have started to hit Ballast Point to watch the sun set and enjoy a few pints.

Right off Graham & McFadden? I stopped in there to watch a game and have a quick appetizer while one of my kids was at the trampoline park down the street. I live in HB but on the complete other end of town so don't really get up that way much. I have yet to go to the Ballast Point in Long Beach. Will definitely try to get there this summer as I've heard it's a nice spot.

yep, that's the spot. Good tasty beers and appetizers.

Data point: I stopped at a local brewery that has 11 taps:
  • 4 Hazy IPAs
  • 1 Hazy Pale
  • 1 Double IPA
  • 1 fruited smoothie sour abomination
  • 1 cream ale
  • 1 Vienna lager
  • 1 "golden stout" (with coffee and spices)
  • 1 guest tap (pale lager)
So that's 6 APA/IPA/Hazy out of 11 taps. Not 90% but still.

Was in Vermont over the summer and went to Fiddlehead- they make a solid IPA
Zero Gravity’s Madonna out of Burlington, VT is also very good.
Vermont has a lot of good options. Alchemist’s Heady Topper and Lawson’s Sip of Sunshine come to mind.
Okay- so, I’ve been “away” for a “while” and kinda figured a thread on IPA’s would be as good a place as any to wet my whistle with the FFA FBGs again!

Came here to share about Alchemist’s Heddy Topper, but DQ apparently beat me to the punch. When visiting a pal of mine up in Manchester, I always bring an empty cooler to bring some Heddy back to The Isle of Long. It’s a rarity outside of VT and 4 packs down here go for $28! Reeeally good stuff!

Missed you guys…
