Raiders released S Gibril Wilson. (1 Viewer)

Wow... this was pretty shocking. Any details on why??
Not sure but it may have been related to some comments he made. "This is a soap opera. I just think we need to settle on something. We need to have a vision of where we're trying to take this team. If you don't have a vision and you're just trying to plug in players, then you're always going to get the same results."

I think they want someone who can play the pass and they did not want to pay the $4.5m roster bonus for a player who is a liability in coverage ...

So they give him 16mil for one season? Seems like they should have just paid the bonus imo.
Yeah, thats my point. I dont think you cut him unless you are actually unhappy with the production. This is not just a money move. And he has struggled in coverage.

How much does this cost the Raiders. Throwing money around like water. Their cap situation must be getting a little murky

A related question - is there a frontrunner to replace him on the Raiders roster now, or should we expect a FA/rookie to fill the role? Is the Raiders scheme good enough to make that replacement a viable starter/force?

Wilson's strength has never been coverage but I don't know that I'd label him a liability either. You can do a LOT worse. Wilson's weakness in coverage is overcome by his strength as a tackler and his penchant for always being near the ball and having a hand in turnovers.

Wilson is only 27 years old. This guy will land on another team. Is he an all-pro? No. Is he a solid safety? Yes. I don't know how the Raiders can justify giving him a big payday a year ago and then sending him packing this season. And if it is due to the comments he made then AD better keep the door propped open as several players in that locker room will realize the quickest way out of town is to criticize the cryptkeeper. I doubt Wilson is the only player on the roster who thinks the team is mismanaged. If anything, this is a blessing for Wilson. Fat signing bonus a year ago, and now he gets another one from wherever he lands.

I'm with houndirish. This is very likely good news for Gibril Wilson IDP owners (and almost assuredly from a professional perspective, too).

While it's certainly possible that the Raider front office could push John Marshall to be more aggressive in his defensive schemes, it's likely that the Raiders are going to be even more of a read-and-react front seven this season. Marshall seemed to favor a bit of an interchangeable safety approach, and the knock on Wilson -- as was mentioned already -- has been his coverage skill. I think his ball skills and big play ability are underrated, but Wilson has gotten lost enough to see two teams who wanted a better cover safety send him on his way.

I had planned to drop Wilson in my rankings this week on concerns that Marshall would hurt his number of in-the-box opportunity (Kirk Morrison may take a small hit here, too), but will hold until I see where he ends up. With the Raiders seemingly the only team going against the trend toward a more aggressive 4-3, there's a very good chance Wilson could end up in another fine situation.

Weird, I just got 3 offers on Gibril today in 2 different leagues. In one of them, I was offered Braylon Edwards and Carlos Rogers. This is interesting to me...

"The Raiders are stupid." is my front-runner. Strength of the team was the D, not the O. They are tearing apart the defense: system, scheme, & players. I think the Raiders are probably irrelevant for the rest of Davis' tenure if this is amove he wanted, and from the quote I saw attributed to Wilson, I've got to think that's the case.

"Interesting"?This is manna from heaven. Take the offer before the guy runs out of rye.

Well, in that league it turns out they're all RFA so it's not a big deal... it would cost less to retain Wilson than Edwards and I can bid on Edwards anyway... but what I meant was interesting is that all of a sudden interest in him has increased after being cut by the Raiders. Apparently people believe that he is going to improve?

If the Giants didn't draft Kenny Phillips, I'd wish for a return but Kenny will be good. But I wouldn't mind Phillips and Gibril.. that would be one hell of a tandem. We can't have our cake and eat it too I suppose.

Well if ex Giant DC Tim Lewis (2004-06) now the DB coach in Seattle thinks highly of Wilson, I suppose the Seahawks could have some interest. .

Makes a lot of sense. Plus the 3 current AFC West teams get to enjoy playing the raiders while they get worse. Might as well throw a bone to the former AFC West team.
