ramses barden getting PT? (1 Viewer)

Started him in 3 weeks. Up 52-0 in a league I started both him and Brown.

While I'm proud of myself, and will gladly talk crap to my fellow league members about it, I'm not too proud that some of my teams (minus the super-deep one) needed to start a guy like Barden so early in the season.

Now, the question becomes does Barden still have a big role when Nicks is back, presumably next week? Cruz held onto his role all year when he started Nicks and Manningham were nicked up early, can Barden do the same?

Not only did he accumulate some huge stats, he also looked very, very good out there. He has great chemistry with Eli as the ball was usually placed perfectly just as he was getting out of his cuts.

Looked like a pro bowler tonight. Just one game, but I am sure we will see a ton more of him moving forward. To the dismay of others, he will likely cut into Nicks and Cruzs numbers as NY plays more 3 WR sets.

he's at least a mario manningham ff wise. i think he will be more reliable and will find the endzone more than mario did.he is a physical beast that will never ever receive attention from defenses. i think he's a good wr3 from here on out.

In a (slightly) related note, I think Barden is a FA at the end of the year and just made himself a good chuck of loot.

Guessing he won't be a Giant next year.

If any of the above is correct, wouldn't be a terrible dynasty stash.

How much value will he really have when there is a healthy Nicks and Cruz on the field?

About the same as Ogletree
While I do think that his value is pretty limited when Nicks is back...the 3rd game last year is when Cruz came onto the map. I don't think Barden is anywhere near as talented as Cruz and no matter how good he is, he still has 2 excellent WR's ahead of him. Last year, Cruz only had to surpass Manningham, who is very average.

started him in 2 leagues! one that i didnt was PPR (but he was obv not taking out j graha, mega marshall green) I agree with this going forward. He is going to be a decent spot start besed on matchup (ie teams corners suck) or injuries. Might be looking to deal him while the market is white hot as 2/3 of my big $$ league lives in nyc.

Very reminiscent of the Ogletree breakout - coverage rolls elsewhere, QB takes advantage of mismatch. Liked what I saw from Ramses tonight and was much more consistent than I've read he is, supposedly big issue, lets see him do it again.
Seems very little like Ogletree except that Barden will likely not repeat the performance, without repeated injury to Nicks or Cruz.Ogletree was the third WR who made his hay on pretty much one route, the slant, against the third DB.Barden was the starter who did well with a variety of routes.Honestly, I don't see many similarities here.
Awful secondary play, coverage rolled to other WR's. Only difference is the line held up better for Eli so he was able to wait for Barden's routes to develop rather than scramble and rush constantly like Romo.

So my questions now that week 4 is here - what is Barden's role? Does Barden still play? Will Cruz go to the slot? Or was Barden strictly a Nicks fill-in?

I've heard nothing about what the Giants may do with Barden after last week.

I would be interested in this as well. Anybody have any thoughts out there?

Strictly a Nicks handcuff, and worthless if Nicks is active. Nicks and Cruz are both target hogs and that won't change anytime soon. Reports are that Nicks is good to go after taking the week off, so Barden got his day in the sun. His limited role isn't worth using even as a spot starter. He'd be a good end of the bench guy to have in deep leagues, speculating on another Nicks injury. He'll hit the waiver wire enmasse next week after folks finally realize just what he is.

i dont know why you are overlooking manninghams numbers last year. there is clearly room for a 3rd WR to produce in that offense. his upside is limited though, unless they decide to feature him in the redzone.

I'm not overlooking the Manningham role. It's just that it's already been filled by Bennett.

He could be good ...ESPECIALLY if he takes the place of Hixon as the #3WR

Still, with how oft injured Nicks is, he has value on any team's bench.

There's a lot of love and commitment between Barden and Gmen. There's a strong change he doesn't leave-it's not typical at all.

If Barden gets at all comfy in the NFL, look out in red zone. Eli threw lobs to Plaxico and to his tall backup (who did so well and curiously stunk in Washington) as well. Eli's a good lob thrower with the timing and softness...I imagine Barden gets some decent TD stats if he gets comfy. One game...

I'm not saying he's a WR2, and I certainly have no crystal ball, but this seems like an over the top negative outlook. He was a 3rd round pick, they've groomed him, and he played like a star when given the chance. I just find it hard to believe that lands him on Coughlin's bench, or a limited role as you say. He'll get action with Hixon recovering from concussion, and probably ridiculously good matchups with Nicks drawing most attention on the other side of the field (my $.02 guess is Cruz moves to slot to make room). Pure speculation, I admit.

Before injury, Barden only really played in red zone offense. Last week did some good sure, but they had no confidence in him between the 20s. He's still got some earning to do and keep in mind to play him (in some situations) means benching highlight film Cruz or Pro bowler Nicks. Also, this is Gilbride who likes to have them run the ball a lot. No doubt he's had good passing offenses and there's balance to it, but there's not enough for Hixon, Bennett, and Barden to make FFers happy. There is for Giant Ws, but that's 5 targets doing well for FF.

Headlines

Barden won’t disappear: Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks is expected to return to the field in Week 4 against the Eagles, which begs the obvious question of what will happen to Ramses Barden, who stepped up in Nicks’ absence in Week 3. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin thinks there is more than enough room for three productive wideouts in the Giants’ offense, which currently leads the NFL in passing yards. “I would hope so,” the Giants’ coach told the New York Daily News. “That’s what they’re here for. The more the merrier. I think there’s a place for everybody.” Barden brought in nine passes for 138 yards against the Panthers, both career highs.

Fantasy Analysis

Barden isn't the first Giants' role player to put up a big performance; Victory Cruz had a similarly out-of-nowhere appearance in Week 3 last season, and he has remained one of the most sought-after Fantasy commodities in the league. That being said, it is hard to remain productive when you are the third or fourth option in the passing game, so this may turn out to be the high mark of Barden's season. The Eagles are allowed just 18 Fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers, so Fantasy owners should consider Barden just a flex option for deeper formats in Week 4.

iants' Barden may catch on like Cruz

During Week 3 last season against the Eagles, Victor Cruz started at wide receiver for the Giants because of injuries and unleashed a 110-yard, two-touchdown performance, setting the stage for his unpredictable and remarkable season. During Week 3 last Thursday against the Panthers, Ramses Barden made his first NFL start and, with Hakeem Nicks sidelined with a foot injury, had nine catches for 138 yards.

Though Nicks will return this week, could the 6-foot-6 wideout’s breakout game lead to a breakout year?

“Perhaps, perhaps,” Barden said with a smile. “I don’t want to be the Victor Cruz superstar per se, just somebody who helps this team win. He had his path and I’ll have my own. You’re always going to work, but when you see it pays off, then it becomes more fun to do it and you end up working even more.”

Taken two rounds after Nicks, a first-rounder, in 2009, Barden said he is ready to realize their shared vision.

“We’ve always said, ‘It’s gonna be me and you eventually, it’s gonna be us,’ ” Barden said. “We always got that in the back of our minds.”

With the injuries to the Giants secondary, coach Tom Coughlin said Prince Amukamara has a “good chance” of making his first career start on Sunday in Philadelphia. The second-year cornerback, and former first-round pick, made his career debut last year against the Eagles, picking off Vince Young on the first series. Amukamara made his season debut last Thursday after being sidelined with a high ankle sprain.

Cornerback Corey Webster practiced Wednesday despite his broken right hand and will play Sunday wearing a cast.

***

Nicks sat out Wednesday, but will practice Thursday, saying he will continue to practice once a week for the foreseeable future. Nicks worked on the side on a bike next to offensive lineman David Diehl (knee). Coughlin said he is unsure if Diehl will be available on Sunday.

***

Corners Jayron Hosley (hamstring), Michael Coe (hamstring) and linebacker Keith Rivers (hamstring) did not participate. Hosley said he is unsure if he will practice at all this week.

***

Lawrence Tynes was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after making a career-high five field goals in the Giants’ 36-7 win over the Panthers.

I was thinking about this before:- Didn't Cruz start out as the nominal "No. 3" WR while Hicks and Manningham (when/once healthy) supposedly held the top two?I still remember Cruz laying around on WW's while people said he was scoring on fluke plays and was only getting time due to injuries...ETA: Picked up Barden, traded for Nicks.Thank you, FBGs.

Picked up Barden yesterday as a handcuff to Nicks.

Didn't think much of it at the time but it may payoff.

Wish we could get more info on the knee, there must be an MRI somewhere in the immediate future for Nicks if they haven't already done one and haven't said anything about it yet.

I wouldn't say the coverage rolled elsewhere in the Carolina game. It was just really soft coverage and bad defense all around. Barden did look good and was wide open on most of the receptions but I would like to see him matched up against a real CB.

I would love to be more sure that it will be Barden and not Hixon that replaces Nicks this week. This might force me to get Dez Bryant back in the lineup. Yuck.

If Nicks is out, why wouldn't both see the field. Hixon has been training in the slot. Barden is the guy behind Hicks. I see both on the field.

Rotoworld throwing water on the Barden fire...confiremed by checking Giants.com.

Ramses Barden appears to have fallen back behind a healthy Domenik Hixon on the Giants' wide receiver depth chart.

Coach Tom Coughlin was evasive on the question, suggesting "there are roles for everybody." Beat writers walked away believing Hixon remains higher in the pecking order -- for now. It's a fluid situation. Barden is without fantasy value barring another setback for Hakeem Nicks. Sep. 28 - 12:21 pm et
