Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

I just noticed my city has a Turkey Trot 5K. I have to get in on that. Wish me luck.

Race starts in 3 hrs or so. Just having my morning oatmeal and I will head out. I think I may push the speed a little more today then I have in the past. Hopefully I will be back with a new best time to report.

Sitting on the bus coming back from the Atlanta half marathon. Terrific weather: Sunny, 45 degrees, little wind. Very crowded race with approx. 10,000 participants. I was placed in the middle corral towards the back so I had to fight through traffic for the first couple of miles. Course was flat/downhill for the first half with a tough uphill around mile 8 and some gentle rolling hills on the back 4 miles.

NEW PR: (unofficial time): 1:43! Took a full 7 minutes off my previous best and according to various GPSs (including mine), the course measured around 13.3 miles.

Thrilled with my time and feeling great about my first full marathon in January.

Beer me!

Race: Detroit Turkey Trot

Distance: 10k

Weather: 45 and sunny

Mile 1: Felt like Xtreme running. With 14,000+ people in the race and the first mile going down some narrow streets I was dodging other runner, walkers, people with dogs, kids and parked cars.

Mile 2: Every thing opened up

Mile 3: Passed by Winnie the Pooh

Mile 4: Passed by a guy wearing boxers, and only boxers. No shoes, no socks, just boxers.

Mile 5: Almost done so I kicked it into another gear

Mile 6: they had us running in a tunnel with very little light. Which was cool

Finished in just under a hour. Official time to come later when I can find it.

Just got home from the 10 miler. Will post more later this evening with pics, but my goal was 2 hours. I kicked it's ###. I crossed in just under 1:51 and even managed negative splits. The 1:51 was gun time, chip time is going to be closer to 1:50. Heading off to Steve's in a few for turkey and stuff. All of you have a safe and happy day.

Workhorse congrats on your PR.

How about the Metro-Detroit running crowd showing up with 3,000 more runners than last years record? Like you said, it was a zoo, but in a good way. Sorry we couldn't meet up. Runmichigan.com should have the results before any other source.I did things a little different. I left the Garmin at home and decided (with her permission of course and against my own typical advice) to just run with my wife and enjoy the run, and another buddy of mine joined us. We got in about mid pack corral-wise (on the right side, Dex) and had very little room to run until the turn around on Woodward which I'd guess was about 1.5 miles in. I spent time on Woodward high fiving kids on the parade route. The greys in the goatee may be a little too good as I think some kiddies may have thought I was really Santa. Great costumes this year and plenty of them. I saw the boxer guy too over by Old Tiger Stadium. I think he had the balls of his feet wrapped in duct tape and was running with a pack of guys in skin colored body suits. Other than running with my kids, I have never not raced any other event I've done. I REALLY enjoyed the run and, as far as I can tell, I didn't annoy my wife. I miss so much while racing. When I did the 1/2 marathon a few weeks back, I completely missed the Red Dawn II set, but caught it clear running today. I was also able to spot tons of people I know, both runners and folks along the route. I have no idea our time, but I'd guess it was around 1:03 or so. Refueled with a Venti Egg Nog Latte and had chips & dip and a egg & bacon sandwich (baconfest 2009 continues). I am a couple of minutes away from making my 1st Bloody Mary and hopefully watching C-Pep & the Lions do something silly and beat The Pack. Happy Thanksgiving all!

My results are also up, but they neglected to post the Clydesdale division. I signed up for that thinking I may have a shot to place, but the top 3 all finished around the hour 20 mark. I sent them an email so maybe I will be included in the results later.

I did it!!!My first organized race. Over 30,000 people. What a great way to start the day. I finished just over 30 minutes.

Finished my Thanksgiving Cross Country Classic. It was pretty crazy. There were tons of people there. They had the women run at 8:00am and men at 8:45am. I got there early to watch the girls. It was a winding circualr run through a park that you did twice. At the end of the loop there was a pretty steep incline and then you ran down the other side. At the bottom of this they had hay bales that you had to hurdle twice. Following the hay bales were two water hazards you had to hurdle. The second water hazard was bigger then the first. This was the prime viewing spot. It was pretty funny watching the girls. Some of them hurdled it with ease, others just ran through the water. Every once in a while one would stop at the water hazard which caused a chain reaction of women running into each other. Whenever someone stopped we razzed and booed them. Hurdlers were cheered on. A few went around the hazards and they were really booed. It was hard to go around the hazards as they had them roped off so you had to go under the ropes to avoid them. We were yelling out numbers to report of girls who "cheated" by skipping the water hazard. So that was fun.

Then came the mens turn. It was really crowded and did not thin out for about 3/4 mile? Since the run was through a park there was lots of uneven terrain. We ran through culverts and over some pretty steep hills. It was uneven enough that sometimes when running my left foot was much higher on a hill then my left foot. I quickly figured I was not going to get a new best time here. Like I say some of the hills were daunting. I even thought about walking the hills but I HTFU and ran them. That is why I do the hill climb on elyptical, right? So I can run the hills and not walk them.

I get to the water hazard and it looks a lot different when it is your turn to hurdle and the crowds are there waiting to cheer or boo. I took them strong hurdling the two bales of hay. I cleared the first water but not the second. My lead foot fell maybe 2 inches from the end. Splash!! mud!!

Kept going and I was feeling pretty whipped but I was passing quite a few guys. Did the water hazard thing again and finished the race. I am waiting for the times to be put up. I was surprised when I looked at my watch at the end. I think I have equalled and maybe surpassed my last time. I was very happy about that as I had really though that was way out the window due to the course.

I will post my time when I find out what it was.

I am ready to eat a lot of turkey now.

Forgot to mention. The first time I approached the big hill prior to the water hazard this little guy came blazing by me. It was pretty impressive. I was thinking holy cow look at that dude go. As I got to the top of the hill I hear the announcer say Here is your winner.......... :goodposting: That means the winner easily doubled up on me.

Results are in and I did get a new PBT.29:56

9:38 mile

I feel good about that. I am improving every race, even on this one which I thought I had no shot at improvement with.

This link has a pic of the water traps with the hill behind them. It is the middle pic.

Congratulations. Sounds like it was a lot of fun.
I am back home now and I must say that Steve and his wife put on a great and delicious spread for Thanksgiving, I am stuffed. Here is the Garmin data. And I am in the Clydesdale division on the results page.

My plan was to make the run at 1 hour even, 12 minute miles. It was so cool I had to keep slowing myself down, but I was close to plan at 56:47. After half way I just ran at a speed that felt good. I passed several people during the second 5 miles, including a blonde in pink shorts, and got passed just once. It looks like a guy name Eddie beat me to halfway by about 4 minutes and I spent 4.5 miles catching him. I passed him with about a half mile to go but he came back in the last tenth and beat me by 5 seconds.

My gun time was 1:50:57 and chip time was 1:50:07. It was a good race and I had a lot of fun. The wife did take pics and I am uploading them now. I will post a link in another post.

Nice job on all the race results, guys.

I'm in small-town America with my wife's family so there was no organized turket trot in town. I did get up and do an easy 4.5 mile run to make some extra room for dressing and sweet potato casserole.

Is your wife taking random pics of girls for you? If so :lmao:

Hey guys. Some nice running by everybody today. I'm impressed.

Opted against the local Turkey Trot this morning, but I did decide to roll with the 15K on Sunday. I think Keggers is going to be there, too. My 15K PR is pretty soft (1:07:31), so I should definitely set a big PR on Sunday. Ideally, I'd run mid-6:30's and finish in 1:01-something, but we'll see.

Did an easy 5-miler this morning, and meeting a buddy tomorrow morning for 11-13. We'll see what we feel like. Wanna get this week's "long" run out of the way a little earlier so I'm relatively fresh for Sunday.

The Third - Nice pace on that 4-miler, and way to get back out there this morning.

jonmhend - Just make sure you get a good night's sleep on Friday, 12/4, and you'll be just fine racing Sunday on three hours sleep. Been there, done that. That being said, are you sure they even offer race-day packet pickup?? Most RNR events do not. You might want to call and check on that.

wraith - Nice job on the Yasso's yesterday!

Wooderson - Way to pop that cherry! Congrats!!

Workhorse - Congrats on the HUGE PR!!! (FYI, unless you ran the tangents perfectly, 13.3 on the Garmin sounds about right for a half marathon. Besides, Garmins aren't 100% accurate anyway.)

Dexter & 2Young - Nice job in Detroit!! My HS classmate who ran the Olympic marathon trials in '08 ran the same race as you guys today. It was her first race back post-baby. She ran 35:58. She won the women's event in 2005 and 2007, and she might have won it again this year. Not sure.

Darrin - Way to rock the negative split. Nice work!!

prosopis - Sounds like a fun race. Congrats on the PR!!

Have a nice night, everybody!!

The following is a cut/paste from runners world. My question is, How do I figure this out with out a garmin type thing? I would like to train for an 8 minute goal pace.

link http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120...4X7X9-5,00.html

Stuff You Need to Know

Pace Intervals (PI) If your 5-K goal is 10:00 pace (31:02 finishing time), run pace intervals at 1:15 (for 200 meters), 2:30 (400m), 5:00 (800m). For 9:00 goal pace (27:56), it's 1:07 (200m), 2:15 (400m), 4:30 (800m). For 8:00 minute goal pace (24:50), it's 1:00 (200m), 2:00 (400m), 4:00 (800m). For 7:00 goal pace (21:44), it's 0:53 (200m), 1:45 (400m), 3:30 (800m).

Speed Intervals (SI) For 10:00 pace, run 1:11 (for 200 meters), 2:22 (400m), 4:44 (800m). For 9:00 pace, it's 1:04 (200m), 2:08 (400m), 4:15 (800m). For 8:00 pace, it's 0:56 (200 m), 1:53 (400m), 3:45 (800m). For 7:00 pace, it's 0:49 (200m), 1:38 (400m), 3:15 (800m).

Recovery Time For pace intervals, slowly jog half the distance of the repetition (i.e., 200m jog after 400m repetitions). For speed intervals, jog equal distance (i.e., 400m jog after 400m repetitions).

Hills and Easy Runs For 9:00 pace, use the lower number; 7:00 folks move toward the higher.

Interval and Hill Days Jog 2 miles, then run 4x100m strides to get primed before the workout. Jog 2 miles to cool down after, then stretch.

What a day. Got up for the 10 miler and it was about 55 degrees - up to 60 by race time. By the time I finished, it was pushing 70. I would have preferred it a bit cooler, but I really can't complain.

About 2K people there for either the 10 M, 5k, or 1M fun run. My goal was to push 9 min miles as long as I could just to see if a 2 hour 1/2 was possible. With only about 700 running the 10 M, clock and chip times were fairly close. Settled in with a few runners that were going a bit faster (8:50's) and I just kept up with them. Maybe that was the key - if you've never run in AZ there is no shortage of lets say "incentive" always running right in front of you. The race started at a spring training site and then wound through a wash. It would have been fairly flat but they took us down into the wash and back up a few times.

Really felt great and was running at about 8:50 pace for quite a while. I really thought I'd start tailing off, but I didn't have to. I wish I'd have been able to really pick it up the last mile, but wasn't able to.

Finished in 1:28:45 / 8:53 pace. Kept pretty consistent pace (slowest was 9:04, fastest was 8:41). I've been able to do a few training runs at that pace, but not for 10 miles. Very pleased and now have hope to finish the 1/2 in less than 2 hours.

Noticed that the winner ran 5:26 pace. Wow...

Came right home afterward where I'm the turkey fryer master. Had 20 people together around the table (ok 3 tables). Flew my folks in and the wife's family was all there. Couldn't ask for more. I thought I might be tired from the run, but really wasn't.

Here's hoping all of you had a great day as well.

If your classmate is Dot McMahan then she didn't just win it, she destroyed it, beating the next woman by 40 seconds. She is one of the runners with The Brook Hanson Project (Her Impressive Resume) . I have seen her name all over the leader board of events I've done.

If you haven't been to a Hanson's store yet, at least try one for your next pair of running shoes &/or running swag. No one does a better shoe fitting in Metro Detroit, IMO, and you may be waited on by one of more Olympic hopeful (or at least a runner with national acclaim). One of their locations is less than a mile from our house and they always remember my wife & I by name (or at least remember to ask us about what events we are doing or have done). Kind of the Cheers of running stores.ETA, forgot to add that if you bring in your Bib from yesterday within (I think) the next week you can get up to something like 20% off your purchase.

Walked the Fort Worth Turkey Trot 5K with the wife and kid yesterday. Was a huge mass of humanity with over 10,000 people and not as organized as it should have been. True runners like my brother were getting caught behind strollers, dogs and walkers almost the entire race.

Even though we are not running yet, showing up and participating is doing huge things for me and my wife's motivation and mental preperation for future races. I carried my 5 year old on my shoulders about 85% of the race and still felt strong, like I wanted to run most of the time. So for me, the thought is once I lose this 40 pound ball of energy off my back, jogging 5K should be no big deal. Need better communcation with my wife as we both said after the race we could have gone faster but were holding up to help the other. Finished the walk in just under 60 minutes, fighting many strollers and dogs in front of us.

The highlight for me was as we were coming around one of the last turns through the neighborhood, coming straight at us was the lead pack for the 10K run. It was great motivation watching those runners do their thing.

Cool1 hr 5k with a 5 year old is good. I started out worse then that and I had no 5 year old to pin it on.

Dexter & 2Young - Nice job in Detroit!! :goodposting: My HS classmate who ran the Olympic marathon trials in '08 ran the same race as you guys today. It was her first race back post-baby. She ran 35:58. She won the women's event in 2005 and 2007, and she might have won it again this year. Not sure.
If your classmate is Dot McMahan then she didn't just win it, she destroyed it, beating the next woman by 40 seconds. She is one of the runners with The Brook Hanson Project (Her Impressive Resume) . I have seen her name all over the leader board of events I've done.
Wow that is an impressive resume.
I brought my first running shoe from the Hansons store in Lake Orion a few years ago.

Hey, guys. Met up with a guy from my running club this morning for 13 miles at 7:47 pace. I wasn't really feeling it today, and we fell off the pace a little bit towards the end, but we finished it, so it's all good.

A couple of miles into the run, we almost got hit by some redneck in a mini-van who was talking on his cell phone. He was approaching the stop sign and was turning left, and he clearly had no intention to stop and look for pedestrians. Luckily, we were running defensively, so we stopped instead, and when he finally saw us, I told him to get off the effing phone. He turned left, and then he slowed down, opened his window, and this is how it went:

Redneck: "What did you say to me?"

Me: "I told you to get off the effing phone, jack###. You almost hit us."

Redneck (mustering up all of his wit): "Eff your hand."

My buddy: "Why don't we get the police involved in this conversation?"

Redneck: "I don't care. Do it."

My buddy: "You're the one with the phone, dumb###." :o

Me: "Eff off, dude."

THE END.

Have a great day, everybody! :wall:

Anyway - welcome and if you have advice for how to get the wifey involved, I'm all ears. Mine insists she just can't run...
Does she have any girlfriends that run? My wife hates running with me, but enjoys doing races alone or with girlfriends. Maybe a girlfriend or two could motivate her.A little piece of advice. Running a race together with your wife sounds like a great idea, until you do it. Vegas was different as we got remarried during the race, but other than this one, my wife HATES running races with me. Looking back, I am a pain in the ### to run with I guess. We ran the Indy Mini together. The problem arose mostly from my 1/2 pace being around 8:15s and hers was 10:00s. I tired like heck to throttle back, but ended up pushing her a bit too much by accident. Making matters worse, I was signing along with the bands and high fiving volunteers all race long as it was an easier pace for me (which ##### her off even further). Bottom line was that she PR'd it with a 2:07, but was miserable in the process. Now, we pick a meeting spot for after the each race, share a hug and a kiss before each start and meet up at the end.
Johnmend - Forget the wife. Go run with the girfriend.2Y - You are completely in the right here. Your wife sets a PR and is complaining after you sacrifice your race to pace her? Next time have her eat some of those new HTFU flavored Gu's during the race. (BTW, I don't run with the wife. I just meet her at the end).Bogart - :bag: Workhorse - Awesome PR! BTW, my 305 always measures a tad long (typically 1% or so).Darrin - Another freaking awesome result.Prosposis - yet another PR! Damn, what a weekend.-----On my front, I was stuck out in farming country for Thanksgiving (no net access :sniff:). Did get to the beach. Wanted to go for a swim in the gulf, but the 60 degree water was just a bit cold for an extended swim. Sucked. I did get to splash around with the kids, which was fun. Water was nice.I got two good runs in. Thursday I got an 8 mile point to point run in - it was uphill and against the wind, which was whipping yesterday. Finished it at 7:50/mile. Pretty darn happy with that. I did manage to find the highest point in Baldwin County, AL. Bonus! (yes, that was sarcasm).Today I wanted to get a short, fast run in. Took off and did a 4 mile run in 30:15. I wanted a 7:30 pace, so I was happy with what I did. Amazing that 4 miles is now "short" and that I can just pump out a 7:30/mile pace on command. My legs were tired from the 8 miler and I still manged to produce. Even managed a negative split - 15:15 then 15:00.Heck, I even manged to get up at 3am and get most of my Christmas shopping done. All in all a good holiday so far!

If anyone is looking for a good, cheap set of wheels Perfomancecycle.com has their Titan wheelset (rebranded Neuvation R28 aero) on sale. On Monday there will be an extra $20 and free shipping, so $130 for the set. That is a steal for a nice, 1650g wheelset. No skewers or rim tape.

I ran an easy 3.5 this morning and right now my legs are just a tiny bit sore. Tuesday I am going out and do intervals with maybe a tempo run on Thursday, Monday and Wednesday I will be at the gym.

I had a thought this morning. I have one more long race this season, a half on January 3, and then just 5k's until next October and I start training for Disney in '11. So I was wondering what you all thought of cutting back my long runs after the the half to maybe 7 or 8 miles and using them to work more on speed than distance. That would take me through the hot summer and I could start building the miles back up toward the end of August.

The professional pics are up from the ten mile race. Enjoy. It looks like you will have to put in the date to get to the event. 11/26/2009, it is the Thanksgiving 10 Miler 2009.

I followed this #85 or more than 75% of the race. Passed her right before mile 8.

ETA: Oh there was a 5k run at the same time.

Hey, everybody. Ran the 15K this morning in 1:04:06 (6:54/mi). It was a couple of minutes slower than I would've liked, but I really didn't know what to expect coming off of back-to-back marathons. I was kinda hoping to go 61-62 minutes, but it was pretty clear after the first couple of miles that my body wasn't ready for that kind of speed. Still, it was a PR by 3+ minutes, and I won the Clydesdale division with eight minutes to spare.

With the exception of mile 5 when I stopped to get a cup of Gatorade, splits were relatively consistent: 6:43, 6:49, 6:54, 6:53, 7:10, 6:48, 6:47, 6:59, 6:58, and 2:02 (6:17/mi) for the last 0.3. Like I've said before, I'm a marathoner; I suck at this shorter crap!

Was able to chat with Keggers and his GF before and after the race. He ran an awesome race, but I'll let him tell you about it.

Have a great day!!

I was going to mention how much you suck at these "shorter" distances  And, don't get me started on the unfairness that is the Clydesdale Division  :grad: There Still Needs to be a MINI ME Division :grad:

I am, of course, kidding, kidding and, well, not so much kidding to the above. Great race and congratulations on ANOTHER PR and ANOTHER 1st in the Clyde Division!

:jawdrop: I'm still at a 9 minute mile for 5k's and 10 minute mile for anything longer. I'm in awe of under 7

Wooderson, et al - great races, runs, walks, and workouts! Fun reading!!!

Nothing new for me ...just winter base building with a lot of yoga and weekly lunges and squats.
