Ran a 10k in June (8 Viewers)

I went to pick up my packet for the 5k tomorrow. As I was waiting in line I could hear lots of folks dropping out of the 10 miler and switching to the 5K. All because of heat. It will probably be pushing 80 when I finish the 5k tomorrow. We need some fall weather here in a bad way.

Cool that you've caught the race bug, racing back to back weekends  Have a good one tomorrow!

Going to start packing for 6 hours of Addison Oaks MTB race tomorrow. Wish Turkish and I luck
Oooh - that sounds cool! Good luck! And to Grue, Wraith, and Prosposis. I am also doing a 5k tomorrow morning, but it will be underwhelming. I really haven't run in 2 weeks trying to get my legs healthy. So hopefully no relapse, but I'm sure my time won't be anything to write home about.

Bad news for me today. I found out about an hour ago that I have a "rather large hernia" so I am going to stop running until I get it fixed. I want to avoid doing anything that can make it worse. From what I understand this surgery is fairly easy to come back from so I am still going to try and shoot for the Thanksgiving Day 10 miler, though I have no idea how fit I will be when I start back up. I feel like I am going to have to start all over....again.
Along with my long list of other surgeries, I've also had hernia surgery. I had laproscopic, so there was no open incision and, as I recall, I was back running in less than 3 weeks and was able to non impact exercise i like 4 or 5 days. Sounds like yours is a bit worse. Did your Doc caution that strenuous exercise could pinch or choke off the intestines? (I know, :X ). Did you ask if it could wait until after your Purdue (not so Purdue) 1/2? Either way, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE TO START OVER!!! You'll be able to walk, ride your bike and do other things to maintain aerobic fitness. They put a titanium mesh in there and the staples take hold right a way.
Darrin - If you can bike perhaps your doctor will let you water jog? That is just about as good.

Bummer, I am sorry to hear this. Hopefully it is a quick recovery.
Ditto, that sounds terrible. Good luck and  to a quick recovery.

Another busy weekend here. Have fun and baby that calf. Try not to "Sand" the start...

Yes, he told me to stay away from strenuous anything because of that. I am hoping that I can get it done in the next two weeks, that should minimize any problems. I would rather just let the two halfs go and get it done quickly.

Thanks to all the well wishes. I will be waiting for race reports tomorrow and I will be following the Chicago Marathon on Sunday. And it won't be completely starting over unless, of course, I put on 40 pounds before I get back to running.

Thanks Steve. If they can do a laparoscopic repair it looks like two to four weeks. Which means I probably won't be ready for the Thanksgiving Day race. OK, I had my pity pizza tonight, and Sunday will ne football snack day, then it will be back to an even stricter diet as I won't be doing much exercise.

Ouch. Sorry to hear about this. :goodposting:
Sucks, but surprisingly there is no pain. If I had not had a hernia described to me by a coworker that went through it last year, I would never have known
describe it for me :goodposting:

I wouldn't make any decisions about future races until after your surgery - and don't hurry back no matter what.

ok, it is most interesting after I have eaten and before evacuation of the bowels. :) When the intestines are pushed back in they sometimes make a loud squishy sound. :lmao:

Seriously, and I have the bolded one.

A hernia is usually a sac formed by the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum). The sac comes through a hole or weak area in the fascia, the strong layer of the abdominal wall that surrounds the muscle.

The types of hernias are based on where they occur:

* Inguinal hernia appears as a bulge in the groin. This type is more common in men than women. The bulge may go all the way down into the scrotum. (but does not in my case)

* Femoral hernia appears as a bulge in the upper thigh. This type is more common in women than men.

* Incisional hernia can occur through a scar if you have had abdominal surgery in the past.

* Umbilical hernia appears as a bulge around the belly button. It occurs when the muscle around the navel doesn't close completely.

I am not. Not my only real race goal is to be in shape for October 2011 and the Bourbon Chase.

 how long do you expect to be out with the surgery? from work i mean.. i'm asking for a friend

Enjoy the weekend guys and good luck to all who are racing!

FUBAR - 7:20 average pace? Have you always been this fast? That is flying.
I don't think it's all that fast, but thanks. Weather/temp makes a big difference. I have been focusing more on speed and shorter runs than before, so I'm improving there. Taking some middle distance runs on trails, but those are always fairly slow. I fear I'm losing my distance ability but I can get that back (I hope). nice and easy 24 minutes this morning, 8:05 pace.

Gym this afternoon, 30 minutes of weights, 25 on the bike. (finally 8/8 on this 100/100 deal)

I'm not even sure what it's called, but I did squats, shoulder lifts, and curls on the half-ball balance doohickey, maintaining balance to work the core. Just trying something out. I think I'll do this once a week.

Absolutely. Races come and go. Except the Chase, of course!BTW, Pat, I have a line on a friend who wants to sign up. Triathlete guy, 35, runs a ~54min. 10k. Super nice guy. Should I give him the opportunity to claim the spot?

From what the doctors told me it may be only a couple of days, but I will be on limited duty as to lifing and such. Luckily I am a computer tech so that shouldn't be a problem.

Lots of luck to gruecd, wraith, dexter, prosposis, and anybody I missed who's racing this weekend. You guys running Chicago have been training in this stupid heat all summer, so here's hoping it all pays off. :wall:

Not much on the agenda today. Taking my son to his 5th/6th grade football game, and then tailgating all afternoon with friends before our college game tonight. Lots of beer will be consumed.

Wow, Chrissie Wellington racked her bike this morning and then decided, due to recent illness, that she'd back out of Kona. Great race coverage HERE.

Wraith & Grue, one more good luck to both of you! I'll be watching FB mobile heading back from the MSU Triathlon tomorrow looking for awesome times!

Prosopis, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! (I'll leave it at this, so as not to steal your thunder).

Good race today. Best I have done with some controversy.

Race did not go off on time as the police were blocking the streets. I am not sure why it took longer then expected but it did. No big deal. Pretty big group at the starting gun. I had some trouble breaking free from the group but I dont feel like I am good enough to start up front either. I was stuck behind what I assume was a dad/son combo. Son had some obvious physical disability and was holding onto dad while going. They did mention a 12 year old blind boy would be running with his dad. I dont know if this was him or not but it is possible. It looked like more then just blindness to me. Anyway that got me a little teary/emotional right at the start. I am one of those people that has to leave a room when a hallmark commercial comes on so it does not take much. Any way I broke free and hit the tunnel which had the same people as last year playing these big Indian drums. I really tried to turn it on here and I was soon worried I was pulling a Sand.

As I got to the first mile marker I noticed that it was not correct according to my Garmin. I kept going pretty strong for me and I did not walk until the last water station. I walked to drink some water. I was able to catch up to people who did not walk at the water station so I felt good about that. The entire way I was noticing the course was short according to my Garmin. As I headed into the finish the announcer was saying someone took a wrong turn and the course was short by 300 yds. I dont think anyone took a wrong turn. I think they set it up wrong but it does not really matter. Good to hear someone yell my number as I came in and say I was finishing strong

My family was at the finish line which was cool.

Official results: ? miles/26:55/ pace 8:39  came in 6 for my age group (I assume that 8:39 pace is because they are still using a 5k distance for calculations?)

My Garmin results: 2.91 miles/ 26:53/ pace 9:13

I went in with a goal of 27:00/ 9:00 pace I would not have hit that if the course was correct length but I am VERY happy with what I did. Last year I was 12th in my age group so I moved up 6 places. More importantly I felt pretty good doing it.

I am also very excited that for the first time ever I ran negative splits.

mile 1 9:24

mile 2 9:10

mile .91 8:19

Maybe I hit that tipping point gruecd speaks of?

Unfortunately today went as expected. I got through half the race and had to DNF as my calves acted up. I did lay down a 6:12 first mile. Through the first half of the race I was sitting at 10 minutes even and was feeling pretty good. I don't think I had 19:xx in me, but a pretty decent 20:xx was certainly in the cards. Good news is that I shut it down before I did a lot of damage - the calves feel ok now. Not that sore.

I'm gonna be trying some aquajogging this week to see if I can supplement my running training. And I'm switching shoes. Despite the fact that these shoes are exactly the same as the last ones all this started cropping up not too long after I bought new ones.

Oh, and just to show I'm still me I finished the first quarter mile at 5:20 pace. Booyah. Actually didn't feel bad doing it. If I was actually training well (and not hurt) I think I could have laid down a pretty darn good time.

I got the tracking text messaging all set up for wraith and grue tomorrow. I think I got to the doc in the nick of time yesterday. The hernia has really been bothering me today. It is sore and causing nausea whenever I stand up.

First things first. Get that thing fixed.

Hey, guys. Thanks for all the well wishes. It's gonna be warm out there, but I'll give it a shot. FYI, if you're interested, you can get live online coverage of the race here.

Darrin - Sorry to hear about the hernia. But if that's what it takes to bring Steve and Furley out of the woodwork, then maybe you should have 'em more often.

Prosopis - Great race, and congrats on the 6th-place AG finish. Sounds like you're starting to get the swing of things.

Sand - Sorry about the calves. Hoping the issue clears up soon.

Plan on getting wrecked after the race tomorrow, so I probably won't be back online until Monday. Again, thanks for the support.

I am waiting for the general surgeons office to call me for the appointment. Hopefully they will call on MOnday, I really want to get it taken care of.

I knew the real info on the hernia issue would be here  Off to bed now...have a 9 miler planned for the morning....even though it's going to be a frigid 59

Welcome to the new faces here!!!!

Darrin, sorry about the hernia, and Sand, sorry about the continued difficulties with the calf.

Prosopis - great job with your race (of whatever length is was)! That's awesome.

gruecd and wraith, you probably won't see this early in the morning before the race, but I'm thinking of you guys. Hope you'll take it easy with the heat. (I might see you before the mile 11 marker).

---

Good training for me with an upcoming 5K in two weeks. I did five mile-repeats today at about 6:55/mile.

Do you have their numbers?I found gruecd but I cant find wraith. I am 4 pages back and cant find it. There is a lot of posting in this thread which is great until I want to look something up. On my way to Mass. I will say a prayer for all the folks in Chicago marathon.

It is not live online tracking, it is text messages. I got the message that grue started at 9:06, 35 minutes after the race started. I just got the text that wraith started.

Race: 6 Hours of Addison Oaks MTB relay race.

Participants: Dexter & Turkish Harem

It's been a while since I was last on my MTB due to concentrating on running for my half marathon next weekend. Well that first 1.5 miles were brutel up hills. 2.5 miles in a tree jumped out in front of me and I wrecked. Luckly my shoulder took most of hit so it's only bruised a little. I was able to get back up and finish my lap.

Lap 1: 36:00

Turkish was next up and he did his lap without event.

Lap 1: 35:55

The team ended up doing 10 laps in 6 hours. With Turkish and I accounting for 6 of those 10 laps. I had a lot of fun and I would be lying if I said I didn't think about the bourbon chase and how much fun that's going to be.

Just got the 10K update for grue, 42:55, projected 3::02:40.

Now that was an exciting finish to the marathon. The guy (last years winner), Sammy Wanjiru, that one also picked up a 500,000 dollar prize for the world marathon championship.

Nice  I have never tried a relay. I know they have a running relay here for valentines day. I would love it if my wife showed interest.
