Ran a 10k in June (5 Viewers)

Ned - Great race and report. That is one heck of a day. I could not imagine doing races like that with so little recovery in between. I am guessing though that the adrenaline was keeping you going during the rest periods. Great job.

Sho_Nuff - You gutted it out and that is what counts. Looks like you did better than originally thought. I think I am going to be facing similarly hotter conditions this weekend.

Tri - Great race. You are really kickin' it right now. Your hard work is really paying dividends right now. How do you sit in the standings after the 2 events if I am remembering right?

2Young - Great race and report. You guys make me want to do some trail runs. Maybe I will try doing that more this summer and fall. Also great to hear about your son and his great event. Most importantly his sportsmanship. That is something that is often forgotten in sports today. I am trying to teach my sons the same thing, but it is a hard lesson sometimes.

Gru - I think you are primed for a great HM. Anxious to see what your results will be.

-------------------

Finished up my last 13 for this cycle yesterday. I averaged 8:24 which seems to be my time for my longer runs this go around. I seem to just kind of settle into that pace. I am hoping that i am able to settle in and go on race day. My legs are feeling a bit stressed right now, but I am not getting my full rest either. I also think my legs where a bit taxed after Friday's run which I pushed a bit harder than I should have, but I will be okay. Tons of water this week and rest. Runs tomorrow and test run on Wednesday. Then two days off and some shake out miles on Saturday. Sunday is go time. I am hoping that we get some rain to cool things off as on Sunday start of race is looking like 55 or more and the day is topping out at around 75+, so I know I am in for a hot one it appears. I am feeling pretty ready though. Not like in times past, but I have a plan and am further refining it this week. With a little luck, I am shooting for a couse PR.

Have a great day all.

My left knee has been bothering me. I have some sort of "catch" in it at times and it pops when I straighten it if it has been bent for a few minutes. Feels fine when I run, but was bothering me enough that I decided to take a few days off.

Ned - Thats sounds like a freaking awesome day. I had to get a second cup of coffee for the RR. :coffee:

Shonuff - I've heard that's a hard course..hills, weather, 35k people. I'd take 2:08. Nice job.

Tri-man - I thought it was standard practice to sand all races 10 miles or less around here. WTF? Hell of a run.

Gru - I'm still baffled at going 80-90% and trucking at a 6:29 pace.

How do you sit in the standings after the 2 events if I am remembering right?
Good memory! They've had three races recorded, now, and I ran two of them. I'm sitting in the fourth spot. The three above me have done two or all three races. Those guys all beat me in the recent 5K by at least two minutes, so if they do the maximum ten races, I don't have much of a shot at catching them. Four or five others appear to be a bit faster than me but do not seem to be active enough to accumulate a lot of points. It's fun, though! I'll keep at it and see what develops. It's forcing me to train really hard and brings a real focus within each race.I hope you survive the madness of the final taper week!!!

Can anyone recommend an affordable knee support? I probably should wear one for when I play softball, at least. The knee didn't really bother me until I started playing softball again.

I'm obviously a terrible coach. This girl (who isn't in bad shape at all) signed up for the Half in Nashville this weekend. She emails me for advice and what not. I've been trying to steer her in the right direction for about 3 months now.

She wouldn't tell me her time so I went ahead and stalked her....3:59:24 finished 3071/3091.

I never did plan on going into the personal training biz. :bag:

You are certainly putting in the training and it shows.I am looking forward to this taper week as I am feeling a little beat up right now. Hoping the legs gain some favorable spirit before Sunday.

Not the race to base any of that off of.Especially if that was her first half. The heat and hills took their toll on a lot of people. It was my 4th half and slowest...14 minutes slower than the last one I did in March. If she is from this area...have her run the Tom King next March...or the Music City Half Marathon in October (its pretty flat and there is a pizza and beer party at the finish). Another very good one is the Middle Half in Murfreesboro. Flat and a very well done event. Just have to sign up right when registration opens because they cap it at 2,500 people (it was my first last year). I think registration for Middle opens up in June.

Congrats to all this past weekends racers. Really interesting to read your reports and also very inspiring.

Tried to do some speed work for the first time yesterday. Pretty much an epic fail. Will get back out there for an easy few miles today.

Shes from Jackson too, she was up there with some friends...I can attest that her training was not very good. It was pretty much a fun thing for her.I'm already dreading my half in 3 weeks. It will be my 4th, but my first in heat. Long range forecast here is in the 90's as far as you can see here. Its summer in the south.

Tri-Man, great race.

Ned :hifive:

Awesome effort and even better Race Report. Very inspirational.

I've been sick as a dog for a full week. Ugh. Hoping to get back out there tomorrow.

Sean - learn from it, and it will get better. Did you try some intervals ...and go too fast on the first ones? Or the legs just generally not ready yet for speed? Again, it'll come! Be patient.

The reports here are always good reads...I did not do much of a full report on this last one.As for your fail...learn from it.Everyone in here has had their share of failures...both in training and on race day.Happens to everyone.

Quick update on my end:

Friday, 4 miles @ 8:22, 176HR. Started out a little slowly and the ankles weren't happy again at about 1.5 miles, but I pushed through and they recovered OK. Pushed relatively hard the last mile.

Sunday, 7 miles @ 9:17s, 164HR. First half was 9:34s, back half was flat 9:00s. Farthest run since the fall, so I decided to:

1) do 10 min run/90 sec walk to allow some recovery and take things nice and easy. Once I felt good I dropped the walking

2) take the pace waaay down

3) stop thinking about my stride, trust my shoes & orthotics and just run

Overall I felt really good and didn't have any ankle issues. This week will be a little added mileage with an 8 over the weekend. SoldierField10 will definitely be slow at the end of May, but now I feel I'll be able to run it.

Started putting together the traiing plan for the summer, and filled in all of the running with the FIRST 1/2 mary plan through the HIM in Sept. Next I'll fill in the bike workouts from the HIM plan 2Y gave me, and add in the swimming. 19 weeks to go...

I found out one of the Oly tri's I did last summer isn't going to happen, but there's another Oly that's replaced it in the same location (July 22, a little earlier than the other race). On that Saturday they have a kids tri - 100 yard swim, 3 mile bike, 1 mile run. My oldest will be old enough by 2 months to participate, and he says he wants to do it :pickle:

A little bit of both I think hah. I knew after the first interval I had probably run a little too fast for me and by the end of the 2nd I just couldn't get my legs going again. I got back out there today for 4.5 easy miles so I'm not giving up. I've always played sports but never really done any "running" before so I'll chalk it up to some early growing pains.Congrats on your race by the way. Awesome stuff!

sho nuff - thanks. I enjoyed reading it even though it wasn't a novel. Good job gutting it out in tough conditions.

Hello everyone!I have some questions about Boston qualifying times that I'm hoping you guys can answer.I'm starting my taper this week for the Green Bay Marathon on May 20. Training for this one has gone really well. So much so that, weather permitting, I think I'm going to try for a Boston qualifying time (3:15 in my age group). What I'm concerned about is this:

the acceptance of official race entrants will be based on qualifying time, with the fastest qualifiers (in relation to their age and gender) being accepted first until the race is full.
If I understand this correctly, the minimum qualifying time may not be good enough if there are lots of qualifiers. Has anyone read or heard anything about the likelihood of the minimum time being good enough? If it won't be, how much quicker would I have to run? I also remember hearing that those who decided not to run this year due to the heat would be automatically eligible next year. Wouldn't this make it even harder for 2013?

I'm in San Diego for the next couple of days for a conference, and wow is this area pedestrian-friendly. Being on midwestern time, I had no problem getting out there at 6:00 this morning (a leisurely 8:00 CT) for six miles along the harbor. This is really cool, because in lots of spots I'm literally feet away from the ocean. I also ran past the USS Midway museum. Another cool thing is that even though I don't know the area, there are a ton of other runners out here, and I found that when in doubt of which way to go, I can just follow people and not have to worry about running down a dead end. Hoping to do a 10 mile out-and-back tomorrow.

Yep. People just run and bike wherever they are. You kind of blaze your own trail out here. It's great because you can mix up your routes all the time but it can be annoying dealing with all the runners and cyclists as a driver. When I was on travel to the midwest or east coast I tried to do the same thing and was surprised there were almost no bike lanes and not many sidewalks. Took me a while to realize you generally need to go to a running trail in a park, and then you see all the runners.

Hey Ned, thought you'd enjoy the thank you email I received from the race company that put on this weekend's trail run (I am so bummed that Run Woodstock conflicts with a big tri weekend, I heard all kinds of stories of pool nudity at the host campground at last years event):

While it's possible that the minimum time wouldn't get you in, I doubt that it will happen. To get into Boston 2012, runners actually had to beat their the stated BQ for their respective age groups by 74 seconds. With the BQ standards being 5 minutes faster across the board for 2013, popular opinion is that "just" getting a BQ will be good enough. There are only 427 people eligible to defer to next year, so I don't anticipate that making a big impact, either.I'll be up in Green Bay myself, racing the half and then pacing a buddy the last 10K of his debut marathon. Good luck!

:goodposting:First of all, you have a beautiful city, at least the part where I am (the Hilton). I'm sitting here looking out my window, with the harbor occupying one half and the gaslamp district in the other half and the promenade right down the middle, and I could just sit here staring at this all day. As much as I love how South Dakota looks in the winter with a couple of feet of snow on the ground, this is a gorgeous change of pace. Furthermore, I can't get over how many people running this morning were listening to music. When you do that in my town -- and this is a town of 22,000 keep in mind, we're not talking Chicago here -- you're taking your life into your hands. Add in the mild climate and this is a great place to run.

Terrific, thank you. Good luck to you as well. Hopefully the weather will be OK. Temperatures have gone over 70 degrees in 4 of the 5 marathons I've run. The early 7:00 start should help.

That looks like a blast, c'mon over to the darkside!!!
Going to test some things out first this summer and make sure my ankles will handle it.
Dude, you got this. DO IT! :excited: ETA: If you don't know how, learn how to read a topo map. It will help scout out the hilly sections of the course.

I'm not one to give up that easily. The state forums on BeginnerTriathlete are always a good place to find all kinds of race info. Looks like you could trail race a 5K inGulfport this Saturday. Not a lot of info, and it looks to be more of a X-Country course, but it might be a nice intro to trail running and a chance to network with other trail runners to find other events.ETA a bit more info, very little, but a bit: http://run-n-tri.com/uploads/Hurricane_5k_2012.pdf

And I just updated my race schedule in my signature. Holy crap.

Hoping I haven't bitten off more than I can chew....

Well, gents, another month in the books. With my running injury I pounded out a lot in the pool and on the road. In fact, this was my second biggest volume month ever at 35 hours completed. Breakdown:

Swim - 13.75 hours, 39,000 yards

Bike - 19 hours, 331 miles

Run - 2.25 hours, 14 miles

Good month in the pool, and really enjoying the biking. Last weekend I set 7 Strava PRs, and Sunday we had a family bike - wife and older son on their road bikes and me on my MTB towing the 6 year old on a trail-a-bike. Couple notable items there - like PSLs girl, my kid never shut up. He also "helped" pedal a lot, which pretty much meant he yanked me all over the road. :P His getup was histerical; he wanted padded shorts like everyone else, so we put him in some of my old tri shorts. They hung like regular shorts (they actually kind of fit!) and I think he isn't giving them back. :penalty: And, even though I'm a decent biker, I just can't beat my 105 lb wife up a hill when my total weight with the kid was 285 or so. This is very disappointing for the 6 year old who wanted me to beat everyone all the time - my little musher.

4k in the pool yesterday. Lots of good work done - 5x200 on 3:30, then 10x100 on 1:45 (holding 1:13-14). Finished up with 2x500 at "I think I just might drown" pace of 6:50s. :fishy:

Today - more swimming! And probably a short 3 mile run at lunch.

Two weeks 6 days until :shark:

I definitely haven't done my due diligence on trail running here. I'm sure there are spots I don't know about. I have a BIL that lives in Oxford AL, we're going to get up sometime and do one of the hundreds of trail races one day they have.

Sorry I've been a stranger around here the past few days. Work has actually involved a lot of work, and I'm not used to it.

Ned and Tri: Awesome races!!

Grue: have a blast at your Half. You deserve a great race. Awesome that you are going to run the 50!! Can't wait!!

2Young: Love the thank you note.

I've stayed there for a conference before and stayed at the Embassy Suites just up the way with my family a couple of times - great area and lots to see/do. Enjoy!

Been a while since I had been out in SD...Stayed on Coronado twice for a conference. Loved the area.

Mailing my app today for the 50th Annual JFK 50 Mile. It's $200 this year. My friend told me this morning that when she first ran it six years ago, it was $90. 14% inflation. Stupid Obama. ;)
I think it's really $150 and the other $50 is an extra fee since only 1% of runners would attempt a distance like that. ;)
Haha. No kidding. :lmao:
Screw these guys
