Ran a 10k in June (4 Viewers)

Hoping after next week's trip to Wisconsin...
I don't think I ever answered your question about our Saturday morning group runs. Yes, people are there running every Saturday morning at 8 AM regardless of weather. If you're talking about the 5th, I'm thinking I'll probably be there, but sometimes when it's super cold and it works with my schedule, I wait until later in the day when it's warmer.
No problem...plans changed and we are not getting there til Saturday afternoon.Im probably going out on my own Sunday morning for a run...then trying to sneak one in Monday and/or Tuesday between family festivities and the Rose Bowl.Appreciate it though...was a nice run last year when I was up there.

Just a note: 200,000 yards swimming. Boom. Done for the year.
Nice. Was this a goal or did it just work out that way? 3 days off in a row, die to holiday travel and family stuff. Headed out for speed work now, long SLOW run tomorrow.

New accomplishments (distance, or type of event): I wouldn't call it an accomplishment, but while spending half the year in Afghanistan, I didn't run a whole lot. Cross-fit (21-15-9!) and weights were the standard workout which added 18 lbs. to my frame, bringing me to 190 at the peak. I'm at around 180 now and feel pretty good at this weight. I ran a 19 minute 5k and 12:24 2 miler shortly after coming back, showing me that crossfit may be adequate to keep speed. A buddy and I completed the Carolinas Tough Mudder, which was a lot of fun and I'd do it again. Even now that I'm back, I'm incorporating crossfit type exercises into my routine.

Your favorite or proudest race of the year: Finishing the Tough Mudder

Favorite memory within training or a race: Sprinting through the muddy mile and electric shock therapy, getting help on Everest. Road marching with my team during PT.

In general, your favorite "go to" workout (distance or course): Tabata Sprints

Specifically, your most productive training workout: I think Tabata Sprints followed by 21-15-9 (Pullups, dips, deadlift, pushups, leg lifts)

Oddest/funniest experience (yours or others) you recall from the year: Watching others complete obstacle during the tough mudder

Best memories of other guys' race experiences this year: Sorry, didn't pay enough attention this year.

Total run mileage for the year: 403 (like I said, a down year)

Significant cross-training during the year: See above

Your goal(s) for the year ahead: Country Music Marathon, although I am strongly considering switching to the half in an attempt to set a PR. I feel doing the marathon would be more attune to going through the motions or just to do it. Also to get ready for a Full Ironman, but that will probably in in 2014. Continue to cross-train. Start swimming over lunch starting this summer (new job will allow me to do so), run a sub 12 2 mile and sub 18:30 5k.

If you really want to PR that half...and can get ready quicker...the Tom King half in Nashville is great to PR...very flat. My PR last year was at that race.Bonus that you finish in the Titans stadium with full video on the jumbo trons and a Titans cheerleader presents the medal.

Not a goal, but once it looked like I could make it I made it a point to get there. Got one more to hit for the year, so not done yet!

Just glad you're back from playing in the sand and sun.

I did a comfortable 3 miles today.

Trying to rev the engine up again. To much being sick and eating poorly/drinking to much.

Sounds good, but I don't live in Nashville right now. We're meeting up with friends for the CMM and I have family there. (Also land, on which we'll build in a few years)

LSD is a struggle for me, probably because I haven't really done it in a year.

I started out today a couple hours later than usual due to cold rain and that there wasn't really a need to leave early (2 of my kids are at their grandparents).

Started with a comfortable pace... check it a mile in, 7:15. :wall: so much for a 8 something.

Try to slow down, the legs don't cooperate. Still running a 7:30 and feel like I can't go slower. So, I decide I'll take it comfortably but after I hit 2.5 miles, I'll walk until I hit 20 minutes. Sort of faking it to a 8 minute pace but I figure the rest will be good for my legs and heck, I may even run the marathon like this (assuming I do it).

10 miles like that, walking about 60-75 seconds every 2.5 miles, I was scheduled for 12 so I took the last 2 with a little pick up, 7:20s.

Overall I'll call my LSD a moderate success, I will probably have to do a better job of slowing down when I start going more than 15, but I feel great right now.

ETA: eating my recovery meal and it's awesome - chopped almonds mixed with raisins, coconut, honey, olive oil, and cinnamon. With coffee

:finger: I can't do speedwork at a 7:15 pace!Heading out for my LSD in a few, emphasis on the S. By the time I get back I'll have hit my highest monthly total ever, with one more run left before year end.

Seriously dude, #### you ;) My long slow run today was 9:40 pace for comparison. I can show you how to run slow if you need a hand.

4 miles in about 6" of fresh snow this morning

that's a whole different type of leg lifting :(
Seriously? What do you wear on your feet?

You guys don't know slow - 12:12 overall pace for my 20 mile trail run today. :) Especially happy that miles 18 and 19 were in the 11:20s, a pace I'm going to need to hold in the middle section of the 50 Miler in April. I had nothing but coffee beforehand, and just GU Brew liquid calories throughout seemed to work pretty well, along with two ginger chews that kept my stomach nice and chill. I was starving when I was done, though! That puts me at 61 miles in the last 8 days, and with 7 more miles to log for the iRunfar 50 mile 12/24-1/1 challenge,. At 139 miles in December I've already set a personal monthly record - one which I plan to break very soon. Then it's off to Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl and a few well-deserved scheduled rest days!

In January-February the training plan will start to incorporate some speed/strength stuff - tempo runs and hill repeats primarily. I'm feeling some good improvement aerobically, now time to get a little quicker (relative, I know!).

And 2013 will start with a crushing blow to the Grues of the world. USAT has decreed that Clydesdales will now be defined as 220lbs. and above, a 10% increase from previous. Running races will follow shortly, I'm sure.

Sadly for 2Y, no mini-me division was created.

Sat 5 recovery miles, 8:57, on treadmill

Sun 15.02, 7:37, 152 HR

Total mileage for the week was 58.33, which is my weekly mileage PR for the second week in a row.

Trail runs are completely different, 50 Miler is no joke. Sounds awesome. I miss being close to an awesome trail :(

Seriously? What do you wear on your feet?
Grocery bags as a liner FTW.
Really? Asking seriously.I just wear extra pairs of socks and stuff my cold gear into them, works fine with snow just have to avoid the obvious puddles.
Seriously. Works like a charm. Was an old hunting trick that I decided to try one day.

Finished the year with one of my preferred runs - 5 X 50/1s (50 pushups, 1 mile) start and end with pushups for 300 total.

Slowly getting back into things here. I ran 24 miles for the week ending yesterday, which doesn't sound great but I hadn't been over 16 miles since mid November. I think it was BnB who pointed me to Umstead Park in Raleigh. Thanks, there are some nice trails here. Yesterday I did a 7.2 mile trail, which again, may not sound impressive, but I hadn't run more than 6 miles in 6+ weeks and this was 7.2 miles with climbs and some technical trails.

Also...something happened two runs ago on the trails that inspired me to run more. I got passed by a borderline Clydesdale ("BC") on the trail. I say borederline because he was going too quickly by me to get a full look at him. But he did manage these inspiring words as he went by:

BC "Good pace, are you training for something?"

Me "You too. (huff, puff) Eh, trying to get back into it (huff, puff)"

BC "You're doing great. Keep it up" (prances off effortlessly)

Me

Later that night I looked for a goal race - think I'm shooting for a mid Feb 5k to start. BC is on notice...

Good week, and good work on the LT run, in particular. When I'm in 3-hour shape, I generally average right around 6:25 pace for my LT miles, and that's typically later in the training cycle. You're setting up for a great race. Personally, I've got 3 more weeks before I start my 12-week cycle for Boston. Right now, just working on getting the Achilles healed up while gradually ramping up the mileage. Hit 35 miles this past week including a 12-mile "long" run, and this week I'll bump it up to 37/14. Achilles has been doing pretty well, with only minor soreness towards the end of the longer runs and afterwards, and it generally resolves after a day off. My plan is to hit 45 miles with a 16-mile long run the week before I start my training. Then it's Pfitz 12/70 with an extra (back-to-back) long run every other weekend so I can get ready for my 50-miler, too. Also getting back at yoga twice/week (M/W) and core/strength three times (T/T/SA).

Hope you all have a safe and fun NYE! :suds:

I've been meaning to get around to this for awhile. Got sidetracked the last two days. As I was getting ready to work out on Saturday, I got a pain in my back. I figured I tweaked it shoveling snow, so I bagged the workout. Throughout the day, it got progressively worse,to the point where I could not sleep at all Saturday night. My wife finally convinced me to go to the ER yesterday morning at around 6am. Turns out I had a HUGE kidney stone. I would not wish this pain on anyone. Anyway, enjoyed reading all of your reports. I was insanely busy all of December with work travel to comment, but have read them all.

New accomplishments (distance, or type of event): Discovering the kayak and finding opportunities to race it. Made(4) podium visits; 3rd Place AG 10K, 1st Place AG & 5th OA in a 5K Run/5K Kayak, 2nd Place AG 10 Leg Survival Tri & 3rd Place AG 5-Mile Trail Race.

Your favorite or proudest race of the year: PRing the 10 Leg Survival Tri by almost 18minutes (on a longer course) and chasing down and beating a buddy of mine (whois an outstanding triathlete) on the last two legs.

Favorite memory within training or a race: Crossing the line in a 5-Mile Trail Race, being handed a 3rd place AG medal and learning my son took 3rdOA in the 5K.

In general, your favorite "go to"workout (distance or course): Whatever the heck I feel like doing, while staying relatively religious to mytracking spreadsheet to be sure I am staying balanced.

Specifically, your most productive training workout: Brickwork, nothing beats doing a couple of disciplines as part of the a single work out.

Oddest/funniest experience (yours or others) you recall from the year: Completing my second lap on a HIM run course and passing Dexter going the other way on his first lap He strung together just about every profanity in the book, berating me for getting him into even thinking about a HIM. I was loopy from racing for 5+ hours at that point and just found the whole scenario as funny.

Best memories of other guys' race experiences this year: If this makes sense, the ones I was a part of. I think it is so cool that I get to see Tri-Man each fall for a 100K Extreme Trail Race and got to do a HIM with Wraith, Dexter & Turkish. It cool that others here have found the chance to meet up and train and/or race together.

Total run mileage for the year: Work travel this past month mucked up things a bit in terms of totals. I am signed up for an afternoon 5K today, so there will be 3.17 more run miles (if I run it, still feeling like ### after yesterday). Run Mileage: 405.52, Swim Mileage: 79.05 (just under 140,000 yards), Bike Mileage: 877.16, Kayak Mileage: 55.49.

Significant cross-training during the year: Pretty sure everything I do is cross training.

Your goal(s) for the year ahead: Personally, I am planning on 2013 being the year of the swim. I am targeting doing a 5K swim in August and doing a (4) race Tuesday Night swim run series over the summer. I likely do around 15 to 18 total events like most years, doing all kinds of events. I am starting to see more kayak events added. More important that any of my goals, I want to work with my son any way I can to see what he can achieve during track and X-Country. I would love to see him letter as a freshman in track and then run the entire fall season on X-Country as part of the top 7.

With another year in the books, I want to again send my thanks to everyone here for the advice and support. I've said it each year I've been in here, that there is no way I would have ever taken a shot at most of the things I've accomplished over the last 5+ years and I have more fun doing each year. Happy New Years all!!!!!

Fri 9.09 total miles, 3 up, 2 down, in middle 4 LT miles: 6:33/161, 6:38/166, 6:44/166, 6:41/169. Last mile was tough but I finally made it through a speed workout! I would have liked to be 5 or 10 seconds per mile faster but I'll take it for now.

Thanks. My body seems to be taking on the additional weekly mileage OK which I was worried about more than anything else -- particularly my Achilles and hips that I've had issues with in the past. Of course, it's still early in the training. Have a fun and safe New Year's everyone!

Finished up the year with a cold 5 miles in Wisconsin. ..avoiding the snow and ice when possible. Hopefully my junk thaws out later.

Last objective for the year done. 18 mile ride today got me to 3000 for the year. That is a significant increase from last year.
Got me a chilly 12 mile ride in...don't wanna over do it the first time out. Averaged 16mph, maxed out at 25. Avg HR was 151. I'm sure that amateur stuff to you. Just ordered my garmin candence attachment and my trainer should be here in a few days. I don't want to put off running, but damn the bike is fun. Felt good, cold as ####. Happy New Year everyone!

2.5 out wasn't bad...back in was into the wind...my twig and berries were not happy that I didn't bring another layer to help block the wind.
Going for a run as soon as my 2 year old falls asleep, thanks for the reminder to start into the wind. Too often I get pot committed on my route and don't realize that I plotted it out to finish into the wind until it's too late.

Up in Grand Rapids, MI to see sibs over the new years holiday ...I love my country road runs here, but an early dissertation project has kept me from doing much. :kicksrock: I finished the year with 4 miles today including four, 1/4-mile hard hill repeats. I really need to crank out some big mileage weeks early in the new year.

Looking forward to new adventures here with everyone in 2013!!!

Finished off the year yesterday with 10mi in 30mph winds. It was friggin brutal. Hated every minute of it. :X

2,156mi for the year. :excited:

LOTS of unshoveled sidewalks, this quickly and unexpectedly turned into an interval run. High step sprint through unshoveled portions, catch breath/walk, jog to next unshoveled portion. Love those runs, just wasn't expecting it today. I mean, we've probably gotten a foot since Wednesday, but nothing since yesterday afternoon.

Anyway, planned on 6 or 7, cut it to 5 instead. Nice way to finish the year regardless

Awesome. Finished up the year today with a 29 mile ride. Grabbed a KOM, which is always nice for an end of year perk. Hey BnB, check this - on that climb set new power record from 2:30-4:00. Held 345w for 4:00 (not bad!). And looking over the year I set lots of good power records, the best of which was 262w for 30m. Something for you to crush next year. So for the year I ended up with 3029m ridden, 550m run, and 201,000 yards swum over the course of 320 hours.

I have no idea what most of that means, but good job!?

On the trails for 7 1/2 today to get my 50 miles in for the iRunFar challenge - and finishing a great 10 days of training and my best month ever. I even busted out my SFBayDuck "speed", hammering miles 3-5 at 9:09, 9:03, and 9:27! And that wasn't all downhill :)

Happy New Year all, here's to a great 2013 of training and racing for each and every one of you.
