Got a new one for y'all. I'm writing this from the back of an ambulance as I'm being transported to get stitches after slicing my head open on a tree branch while running.
Must have been moving fast to create such a trauma.

Get well get well soon!

:lmao: but not :lmao:

That's crazy. As a bald guy I've been there, done that - doesn't take much to create a head wound on a bald dome. But I have never been close to needing medical attention for it. Good luck!

No kidding. I still have a scar from where my 13yo hit me with a disc while playing golf.
Hopefully you didn’t have a concussion!

Yikes. I'm assuming the bleeding was pretty brisk? Or did it knock you unconscious?
Like a faucet - forward, backwards, and to my right side. By the time I realized how bad it was I was on a bridge (3/4 mile long) and had a long ways to go either way to get treatment so I ran the mile plus back to the gym. Took my shirt off and applied pressure to control the bleeding while en route and stopped every 2-3 mins to ensure I wasn't entering a light headed danger zone.

Passed concussion protocol- needed 8 staples though.

Yikes! Glad you’re okay. I’ve hit more tree branches than I care to admit, but never had anything worse than a scratch or bent glasses. Get well soon!

Damn Mac, glad you’re ok. I got knocked off my feet once by slamming into a tree branch but the visor I was wearing kept the gash on my head to a minimum. Glad no concussion!

Watching the WS100 live stream on YouTube until I head over to the Olympic Trials in a few. 200M finals for the men and women today, along with the women’s 10K as the highlights. I’d also recommend checking out the women’s LJ, Tara Davis-Woodhall is very fun to watch.

Really excited for tomorrow’s mens 5K, pulling for former Ducks Cole Hocker and Cooper Teare to make the team (Cole already won the 1500M). And the women’s 1500M finals should be a blast.

And kind of a funny moment walking around with Summit this morning, went by my old fraternity house and Hoka has it rented for the Trials. Bet they don’t know that three (future) Western States finishers lived there together in the early 90s!

The start of XC season will certainly be interesting. How many runs I've done through heavily wooded areas ducking branches, especially in the park where we practice. Even if it is fully healed by the time we start, I'm sure I'll instinctively be a lot more timid.

My nephew ran a half marathon this morning. I was surprised he even found one scheduled this time of year. I’m getting ready for a party here with the dew point sitting at 75. Just brutally humid this weekend.
63 / 54 here...in the afternoon on June 30. I figured hoodies were done for until September, but not on the other end of a 2 week heat wave.

Sank 17 four x four posts today for a fence for the dog at the new place. That’s not the exciting part however.

I USED A NEW SHOVEL FOR ME THAT WAS OUTSTANDING AND I WOULD BONE IT IF IT HAD A HOLE SOMEWHERE.

A flat bladed spade that cut perfectly for sinking square posts. Outstanding day.

:bye:

Just popping in here. Been keeping up a decent bit of biking - probably 2,500 miles this year when all is said and done. Went out this morning and it turned out to be 165 suck index at 8am on. Woof. As a part of that I hit max HR I've ever seen from myself (191) and it stayed there for over a minute. That's how difficult the conditions are around here, at least today.

Anyway, happy 4th folks!

Hello race fans. Sharing the Olympic track and field sched for your viewing planning.
I’ll likely remember to highlight the finals as they roll around.

Running adjacent (I think that’s one of the things in Triathalon), the river is too dirty for the tri swim so needing to delay and re-test. Baltimore Inner Harbor (recently cleared as ‘safe for swimming’ as some lunatics believe it) is flexing on the Siene right now.

So, just how stupid would it be to sign up for 40M race undertrained and knowing you will still be undertrained by race day? Asking for a... friend, yeah.
Sand approved. Did you live?

BTW, I still still exist. 171 Suck Index today on the ride. Above and beyond brutal. Lost lots of weight, though!
Thanks for your concern. I did end up signing up, but outcome still TBD as race is last Saturday in October. It's in NC if you want to come up for the masochism.

None of my runs have been longer than 8 miles since my half in April, so I need to get on that. I'm not going to have the time (or frankly the motivation) to really give it the prep it deserves, but the one thing I need to do is stretch the weekend long run out as summer winds down. If I can get that up to at least 20 by early October I'm hopeful it'll keep things from being a complete disaster. Maybe I need some Tiger Bass blood to pull this off.

An undertrained 40 isn’t going to feel good, but if you can work up to a few 14-18 mile type runs before then you’ll be far better off. #following

Btw, what race or type of terrain?

Terrain seems pretty gentle (Strava link), which is one of the reasons why I chose it (compared to all of the rocky stuff up in PA) in addition to it being close to where my daughter's at so I can roll a a visit and race together. It does sound like a fair amount of roots, but rock level should be pretty minimal, and 2400 elevation is certainly on the mild side for 40 miles. Which I guess is a mixed blessing, because I think I'm going to want at least a couple of walk breaks for the long section in the middle, but with no climbs there it becomes tricky how to plan them.

Since you replied (welcome back to the thread, by the way!), what do you think I should have on me for this type of race? It looks like there are 11 aid stations, but I'm thinking I still needle a water bottle for in between, plus maybe some snacks I can tolerate in case theirs are no bueno. Change of socks and some bandages? I obviously don't want to be schlepping around some huge thing of stuff, but I'm thinking my usual race practice of carrying nothing but a handkerchief would be stupid.

Hey, @SayWhat? What’s up with you? And how is your wife doing after her tough injury a couple years back?
Hey tri! Nothing much new with me except insanely busy at work, house projects galore, two tween daughters with the usual kids activities, and yes, that wife with her fun injury. I've not been super active in regards to fitness, which sucks, and have put on about ~25lbs since Western States in 2021. As such, I've somewhat intentionally avoided dropping in here as much because it's honestly a bit personally depressing. Trying to get myself back on track though. Not so much from a re-engagement with ultras, but just to get fit again and hoping to participate in this thread more as its a great community for motivation.

Thanks for asking about my wife. Short story? She's doing much better. Long story? She had surgeries #6 and 7 last August and October, though this time with a new team of surgeon's down at the Mayo Clinic (world renowned hospital, located here in MN). Her leg simply wasn't healing after five surgeries over two and a half years and the pain/meds were debilitating. So this time the Mayo team cleaned up the injury site again, inserted a rod down through the inside of her tibia, packed the area with a bone graft taken from her hip, and re-broke her fibula since it was now almost an inch longer than her tibia. They also adjusted the tibia when connecting the rod to adjust for the fact that her ankle fusion resulted in her ankle being about 1-2 degrees out of normal alignment. All of this has helped her to get back to walking, almost entirely without pain, since about March. She will continue to wear a custom carbon fiber brace for another 6 months or so, then hopefully not need any further support for that injury. She had scans of her leg a few weeks ago and everything looked to be healing really well. So we're now 3.5 years post-injury, and she's gotten a bit more of her life back. As have I.

Enough about me, what's new with you?

Yeah, I would carry a water bottle for sure because you'll want that readily available and it frees you up to not stop at every aid station if you don't feel like it. Just checked the website for the race and unfortunately they don't list what types of food/drinks they carry at the aid stations. If you have some go-to items that you usually use for training, I would carry those just to make sure you have what you've confirmed works for you. But you can typically find enough at aid stations to tide you over if you don't want to carry too much food/gels/etc.

As for other stuff, I wouldn't normally carry a change of socks for 40 miles unless you feel like it's going to be really wet and sloppy or changing socks every 20 miles or so is something that you typically do. Make sure to put band aids on your nips and I would lube up your feet and parts before the race. Maybe carry some Glide/Nut Butter/etc in case you start getting any hot spots too. Other than that, I agree with your philosophy...don't schlep around more than you need to. With 11 aid stations in 40 miles (that's a lot!!), they should have most of what you would need.

Looks like the race has live tracking! Will be following. Good luck!

So glad to hear of the improvement for Mrs. @SayWhat? …but, wow, what an ordeal for her and your family. Best wishes for continued improvement to an acceptable new normal.

Things are well with me! Today, I formally started as a visiting accounting professor at a new, excellent school (North Central College) that’s 15 minutes from our newish suburban home. NCC happens to have, arguably, the most renown D-III men’s CC program in the country, so I look forward to engaging with all of that.

I’m several weeks out from a local marathon, which will be my qualifier for Boston, 2026, as I will have moved to the 70-74 (!) AG. The goal remains to place AG top ten (or better) in that race. So far, so good. Although the weird contortions and angles of my lower legs, ankles, and feet could probably match your wife’s 1-2 percent alignment shift. All in all, life is very good!!

Sometimes it pays to be old.
Huntsville sprint tri, 13th overall, 1st masters 👴 it was great to see one of my daughter’s favorite teachers finish right behind me - but she started later so she actually beat me. She’s a rock star, so despite my wife teasing me for getting beat by a girl, I’m quite good with it. (2 of them really).

They seeded us by swim time, i get #16 but i look next to be on the bike rack and a gal we train with is 17. I know she’s faster than me in the swim (every leg really, she won the women’s and was 7th overall). So I decide to back up to the 30s where there’s a handful of friends. Seems to be right as I didn’t get passed and only passed two I think. Bike felt strong, run sucked but I sucked harder. My hamstring is still bothering me and I thought I tweaked it at mile 2 but finished anyway. Now to get some more rest. Only one tri left this year, in 3 weeks. Then a 2 mile swim in September and I’m done for the year.

Hello sports fans, among other things we have fast stuff this afternoon.

Men’s 200 final 2:30 est
Women’s 400 hurdles 3:25 est
Men’s 110 hurdles. 3:45 est

JESSICA MFING HULL!

Ok, it was a Silver, and she’s Aussie. But awesome to see another Duck on the 1500M podium. I do miss occasionally seeing her running around town.

And an incredible run by Fisher in the men’s 5K. What an Olympics for him.

I read that mile 18 of the marathon includes a 13.5% slope. Yikes! I’ve sometimes worked a hill a few miles from my house that has a 10-11% grade, and it’s a killer. Can’t imagine that steep of a slope that late in the Olympic marathon.
