Since I'm not running at the moment, may as well give you all a Wisconsin update now that we have been here a year and a half.

1. Oldest son is in his second year of college. He has been sharing varsity kicking duties with another kicker. The #1 kicker caught Covid and hasn't been able to play the last 3 weeks, and won't be able to this weekend. It has really affected the poor kid, so Covid is still out there and causing damage. My son was elevated to varsity and he's been handling kickoffs. The other kicker is handling the extra points and field goals. This is one of the things I love about his head coach is that he provides opportunities for the kids so they can contribute. My son's job to angle his kicks to the sideline to try and pin the other team back. He has had some tremendous results, a few so-so kicks, and a few in between. He also made the Dean's List last year as a freshman.

2. 2nd son's hockey team won state last year. My son was shafted by the coach unfortunately. Pretty much the new guys syndrome, especially in a small town. He isn't playing hockey this year. BUT - he only needs 3 hours to graduate high school this year, so Wisconsin has a program where you can remote school and then work. So he has been apprenticing with an electrician since summer and he's making good money and thinking about his future. So he is all good with things. Catching a bunch of walleye and he's gotten a muskie this year, so all is alright in his world.

3. Daughter has been in the theater program at school and immediately has a group of friends. So much so she was named Outstanding Freshman of the drama department at school last year. Which is saying something since she was new in town. Has been working at a local bar/restaurant since last year and has saved up a ton of cash. The place has also welcomed her and the employees treat her like one of their children. So we are very comfortable with her being there.

4. As for us, we are meeting people and just now really starting to get comfortable. Last year was a hard year. Selling the house, moving, starting a new job, kids in a new school....and all that comes with that. My wife has really adjusted to the weather - we went out a lot last winter and enjoyed our property, the snow, ice skating on frozen lakes, etc. This year we are going to grab some snowshoes and try those out. The lifestyle here has been so rewarding from a peace of mind perspective. It's quiet. Little traffic. Wildlife. The people are so kind. There isn't that bitterness and "edge" that comes with living in a city.

Now that all that is out of the way, here is what you all are really here for: The Farm and Land Report!! So, I have two garden spaces:

1. Garden 1: was here when we moved in. About 20' x 20'. Located right next to the woods (makes a ton of sense). So it gets about 4 hours of sunlight a day. There are two apple trees in there, and they are late producers. So the apples are just now about right to pick. So we have gotten probably 75 apples off of those. There are still about 2 dozen still left to pick. So they have been awesome.

I also have asparagus in that space, and I planted a bunch more this year. Some will be ready next year and some the year after. I will add another batch of planting next year. Asparagus does well here, so this space will be for the two apple trees, asparagus, strawberries, and maybe cucumber. I planted cucumber and squash and zucchini this year, but I may move them next year. The thing is, the cucumber produced about 2 cucumbers a week, so that is about the right amount for how we consume them. Still thinking about this. I have all winter to think.

2. Garden 2: we put this in this year. 20' x 20'. This one is behind the shop in full sun all day. We put a fence that has 3' of chicken wire on the bottom, with 4' of wire fencing above that. So basically 7' of protection from rabbits and deer. This garden had sweet corn, tomatoes, green beans, and green peppers. This garden did FANTASTIC. Due to the cool weather at night, we had almost 4 weeks of sweet corn available once it started to ripen. We ate like kings once everything started to go. At this point I have frozen the following:

Green beans: approximately 15 bags for meals (one last bunch ready for processing)
Mixed veggies: green beans and carrots - approximately 15 bags for meals
Mixed veggies: green beans, carrots, corn - approximately 10 bags for meals
Diced tomatoes: 1 qt bags to add to soups, etc... - approximately 10 bags
Diced tomatoes/basil: for spaghetti sauce - approximately 5 gallon bags (more to come as I have a couple dozen tomatoes needing processing)
Grammas sweet corn: a recipe our family has used for 3 generations - 3 large gallon bags
Sweet corn: quart bags for soups, etc....aboot 5 bags
Apples: 1 gallon bag prepped for apple pie (more to process)

Finally had a hard freeze this week so the garden is done for this year. Picked everything left so I have tables in my shop with fresh fruit and produce on them ready for processing.

We are going to expand this garden with an additional 10' x 20' space. Ground prep starts now.

Anyway, that's about it for now. Been doing a lot of forest work lately - cleaning up the downfall and making piles near the edges of the woods so we can easily grab wood for bonfires this winter.

Enjoy your running and post some dang decent race reports once in awhile! :headbang:

@ChiefD I don't remember if it was your neck or back, but how have things been with your health? I'm assuming not too bad as you've obviously been able to do a lot of manual work with the gardening, forest work, etc.

Good luck in Chicago @SteelCurtain and @bushdocda.

@Juxtatarot will you be running? How is your heel feeling?
No, I'm skipping it.

The heel wasn't handling long runs well and the chance I wouldn't be able to physically run 26.2 miles seemed too high to give it a shot.

The issue is a Haglund's deformity. I had this on my left heel several years ago and now I've been dealing with it on my right heel. I thought I had it healed in late June/early July as I felt no pain for a few weeks, but it came back and progressively got worse with long runs/60-mile weeks. I thought I might be able to power through but it became apparent in mid September that I couldn't.

There are a few positives though. I think I'll be able to fix this issue with strengthening, stretching and reduced mileage. After all, my left heel had the same issue and it's fine now. Also, it's my only injury. I had a lot of hamstring/glute issues for a few years and those don't bother me at all any more. Finally, I learned from a cardio standpoint I can get in PR shape somewhat easily. My last "long" run was in Vaporflys and I averaged 6:32/142 HR over 15 miles. That was with a lot of slow miles in training and virtually no speed work. I don't think I'm too old to run well still, I just need to be better with injuries.

Wife and I spent a few days in the Boulder area this past week. I'd never live out there for various reasons, but man the running route options are just insane. Very jealous of the trail system out there for runners and bikers.

We went to Chautauqua Park to do a short but steep hike up the flatirons. After a few minutes of being surrounded by fit people, wife tells me "these people make you look out of shape". Gee, thanks dear! :lmao:

Marji Gesick sign up is on October 17 at 9:06 pm est for 2026. It's supposed to be capped for all events, but somehow it never seems firmly enforced especially with runners, but no guarantees. The event usually sells out in a few minutes if anyone was interested in either the runs, bikes, or duathlons. Sign up is on the official web page and I'll post that next week before registration just incase anyone thinks they want to give it a go.

After a few years health battle with some odd issues i haven't had any setbacks this season, so I'm signing myself up for the 50mi (actually 63mi) bike race. That's plenty hard for the average Joe and will give anyone all they can handle. Only goal is to finish at this point in my riding life. Without a really challenging goal like this it feels like something was missing. I'm hopeful any health issues are in the past and i can put a full effort into this with a few tune up races along the way.

You want to post an address for the funeral home so we can send flowers?

Lol. Might not be a bad idea just incase.

I thought i had turned the page on this kind of nonsense, but until the wheels fall all the way off my middle aged ego still has the itch.

Crewing and being part of the behind the scenes work was/is fun, but I'm too competitive to be content watching even if my only real competition is myself at this point.

Eta. I seem to have lost my emoji posting privileges. :(

It's my neck and it's getting worse. The manual work I do around the house is in small stages. At best I have maybe 2-3 hours a day where I can do stuff of a physical nature. And I certainly pay for it. If you ever see a run on Strava it's because I had a good day that day.

So for example, when putting up the fence for the garden, that took about 3 weeks. That would normally be a weekend. But I'm getting older, and slower, and the sad part is I'm only 56. But that is also why we moved when we did - so I could do all this hard work now trying to get the house and property where we want it before I can't do it physically.

Some days I can't do anything. Work is even becoming an issue with sitting. I have to move around a lot. Stand at my desk, take short walks, sit in different positions. It's really uncomfortable right now and getting progressively worse. Driving in car is bad. We have been driving to my son's games all over the Illinois/Wisconsin area for the last 6 weeks. It's been horrible: sit in a car for 4 hours, sit at the game for 3 hours, sit in the car for 4 hours to get home. Pain all the time.

Basically from the moment I wake up until I fall asleep I'm in pain. I've been working with my doctors on pain options so we are trying different things. At this point they don't think surgery is going to help. Due to the degenerative nature of where it's happening, my spine up between by C5 and C6 vertebrae has narrowed. So all those nerves are barking and my entire upper neck and back muscles are tight as hell, mostly on the right side. I also have arthritis now up in that area.

That being said, it is what it is. I can still function and still do a lot of the things as before. It's just slower and hurts. Some days are better and some are terrible. I try not to take too much pain killers because I need my liver to be able to still drink beer.

I'm not bent over and cripple or anything like that. It just hurts all the time.

But I can tell you this with 100% certainty - I would rather be here than anywhere right now. It doesn't hurt to lay on my back in the grass and watch the stars, and northern lights. It doesn't hurt much to sit in a chair outside and hear complete silence. And man, there's nothing like seeing some baby fawns freshly born stumble around and wobble as they find their legs.

We are happy here. I'm happy here. Life's pretty good all in all.

Just to fill in here when things are notable. Last of the rides happening now (getting too dark - boo hiss). Tonight was ridiculous. For my HR tonight spent 14 minutes in Z5 VO2 land, 16 minutes in Z6 max aerobic, and 3 minutes anaerobic - 40 total minutes at 170+ HR. I'm off to bed.
Come on up to redstone sunday. 100-112 miles, we’ll try to maintain 20mph
