Ran a 10k - Official Thread (9 Viewers)

Just in case there is anyone on this board who doesn't go into the Yoga Pants thread whenever there is an update, I felt it my duty to borrow this recent pic and bring it here - especially since we haven't had much race stalking around these parts lately.

Don't forget to stretch

Best running accessory I own is this thing I picked up at the Boston expo last year called a FlipBelt. It's like a big headband made of stretchy material you pull up over your waist, has four slots in the material you can tuck thing into: gels, phone, keys, tp, id, etc. Don't even know you're wearing it.

For long runs I usually drive somewhere to start, then loop back to the truck for fluids and fuel. Or I drive out beforehand and stash a Gatorade in some bushes along the route.

Similar but this is the one I have:http://www.flipbelt.com
Oh yeah, that's the one I heard was awesome.
That's it, the thing really does rule.

I think the key for treadmill runs is to plan them ahead of time for days you know are going to be crappy and make them runs where you are varying speeds, inclines, etc in intervals so you're breaking the run into segments. I did a 6 miler this morning that I actually enjoyed; 1.5 M warm up, then 10x of alternating 2min of high intensity (increasing each rep) with 1min low, then 2M cool down. Had recorded the last quarter plus of the game last night, the minutes/miles flew by.

Traveling to Buffalo this weekend w my son for hockey and need to get a 15 miler in, could be a cold/snowy one but looking forward to a change of scenery. Hotel is right next t U of Buffalo, I'm assuming I can find a decent loop around campus.

As others have said worrierking, sorry to hear about you scratching the marathon...feel better soon.

I did a 7 miler yesterday, and it helped to add the variety. Used a 1.0 incline, but at the start of each mile, raised it to 2.0 for .1 mile, then on each half mile, 2.5 incline for .1 mile. A big benefit of the TM is that I can get work on inclines that's hard to do in flat Chicago. However, I can't practice the downhills, and that's equally important. And: The TM went into cool-down mode after 1 hour. Grr. Also, the TM pounding, for whatever reason, caused a bit of inflammation of the soreness on the ball of my foot.

Terrible day for me yesterday, running wise. I was driving to the gym around 5:45 a.m. but got a flat tire. Skipped the morning to attend to that. I got in 90 minutes yesterday evening but when I got home, I took a step after taking off my shoes and felt one the sharpest pains I've ever felt in my heel. I could barely even walk on it.

I decided to skip a run this morning due to the heel but now it feels perfectly OK. Maybe I'll test it out.

First run on the Hoka Cliftons today, 5M on the treadmill. Felt pretty good overall, a little tight on the side of the right ball which is kind of bulbous, and irritated, compared to the left. I assume it will loosen up. Love the extra heel cushioning though.

Anyone have issues with the tom tom watch syncing with Strava. Worked fine until Saturday, and hasn't synced since. Watch is syncing as normal with mapmyfitness, and the settings look fine. Haven't changed anything. Any thoughts?

What version of MySports Connect are you using? I am on 2.0.9 and haven't had any issues. If anything, it's been uploading really fast since the latest software release.

Not sure. It updates automatically, so I assume it's the latest version. Need to check it I guess.

Keep the updates coming PBM. I was sitting here drinking coffee thinking about where I would be in the race right now. And how I am missing the year the weather is perfect.

Thanks guys. Tough day, and don't beat yourself up too much Worrie, the temperature/humidity part was great, but the wind was stronger than forecasted. (not enough to be a huge factor, but hurt just a bit).

I might be running Boston. More updates to come in the next week or two...

Wow Steve, great race! If you run Boston we'll have to arrange an FBG cornhole...missed it last year but will make it happen this time.

Still debating about what to do today. About a foot of snow needs shoveled, but the city has shockingly already cleared our sidewalk. I assume they've done the other tier two roads, so I feel obligated to use them. Gonna be winded before I even start though from all the shoveling.

May need to channel some motivation driven by Steve to get this all in today...

At 15k at 49:17. 2:18:36 pace he needs sub 2:19 for Olympic trials.
Finished in 2:23:26. Fantastic effort!

simply awesome.

cold this morning, for Alabama anyway. 17 degrees with a windchill making it "feel like 8" according to wunderground. Still went for 14, my penis is numb.
Yeah, I will be experiencing that same joy later. 4 degrees when I went out side this morning. Should warm up to 19 by tonight when I run. Official HM training starts this week.

Gotta love seeing three older QBs in the championship games. Age is just a number!

Lack of talent otoh, that's a killer. ;)

A decent training week for me:

M: 7 miles (treadmill)

T: core session with trainer*

W: 13 miles, hilly

Th: 12 miles (8:32/mile, 142 HR)

F: rest

S: 1200m swim

S: 1 hr stationary bike

32 miles plus some cross-training. * New club membership comes with an assessment and a couple of sessions with a trainer. She walked me through some lunge/squat variations (it's like she knows) and a few of the machines. Tomorrow's session will include a quick swim assessment (which happens to be her background, including Total Immersion). I'm actually pleased that I could do a 1200m swim workout when this was only my second pool workout in years (otherwise just some lake swims in a wetsuit).

I got in 8 miles today in the 10 degree cold (-5 windchill). I actually bundled up too much and was rather toasty.

Last week was pretty ####ty for me training-wise with the brutally cold weather and some work stuff. Only managed two runs, a mid-week 10-miler and a solid 17-miler on Sunday. Like tri-man, I also had a couple of gym sessions with my personal trainer. Lots of core work and other stuff specifically designed to complement my running.

Super cold again yesterday, so I hit the Pettit Center for 9+ miles (33 laps) including 12 x 100M strides. The strides actually helped to break up the monotony. Warming all the way up to 15 degrees this afternoon, so I'm hoping to meet a buddy to knock out a 14-miler. Was up at 4:30 this morning to meet the trainer at 5:30, so I hope I'm not dragging ### too badly tonight...

I was able to get one more good run in 10 days ago before the snow started and I took advantage of the one good day since, but otherwise it's been a real mentally challenging stretch. Today is going to be very rough, but thankfully it looks like the weather starts to break tomorrow.

MRI Results:

"There is a truncation of the free edge of the posterior body and posterior horn of the medial meniscus suspicious for radial tear. There is some thinning and degeneration of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus. There is partial thickness chondromalacia of the articular surface of the medial femoral condyle. There is a cystic structure in the soft tissues posterior to the medial distal tibial metaphysis which may represent ganglion cyst."

Visit ortho later this week for treatment plan. Likely gonna get scoped again. The meniscus tear is no big deal except I already had a meniscectomy in essentially the same location eight years ago. The chondromalacia is bad because it may be the beginnings of arthritis. I am clueless as to the cyst and what it means. I'll google it later.

I am going home to pop an anti-inflammatory and drink a beer. First step to a complete recovery!

I'm jealous of you guys who get in weekday lunchtime runs. How do you do it? Are you working from home? Do you have a shower at the office?

So ya got a sore knee, right? Man, all that medical stuff doesn't sound good. But I suppose we all would show some damage if they took a close look.

Sorry to hear! I can only imagine how frustrating this must be.

Not to be dismissive of Worrier's injury (and I have no idea what most of that even means), but the bolded was my first thought. I remember a doctor telling me that as soon as you stop growing, your joints start the process of deterioration.
