Team FFA, duh. There won't be a work team this year, but I don't think we meet the club team criteria.Weren't you signing up with a team at work? I'm open to whatever you guys want to try.
Club Team Criteria:
• Club teams may be assembled from RRCA or USATF clubs, other registered running clubs, YMCA’s, school teams, etc. All members of a registered team must be members of the same club.
So it looks like we will have to signup individually.
What's your goal race?So ate a greasy burger, onion rings, and fries for lunch - not exactly the best lunch for a tempo run. So of course I went out and had one of the most fun, smooth, perfect run ever.
Thanks to hang10 and juxt for the tempo run information. Basically followed both of their postings. So the plan was for a 45 minute run. Ran the first mile as a warm up, at a 9:57 pace. HR was 145. Basically a minute faster at the same HR as a year ago. Sweet.
Ran the next 25 minutes combining hang10's and juxt's advice. Based on juxt post, wanted to keep my HR between 165 and 172ish, which is between 85 and 90% of my max.
Worked out beautifully. Average pace over that 25 minute segment was 8:34, with a HR of 172. Then I had a cool down the rest of the way.
Now I know why Ned loves these tempo runs. This was fun. And based on that pace I feel pretty damn good about this run and where I am already in this cycle. 10 weeks to go until race day. So far so good. Glad to be back in it mentally too.
Thanks for all the help.

I'm not skipping it (it's too good to miss), so looks like I'm going to double up; trail half on 4/30 & Broad St on 5/1. Maybe this will motivate me to get off my fat ### and run.I'd injured a Piriformis muscle last summer, and it truly was a pain in the butt (deep in the butt). Sitting was often uncomfortable, and driving was the worst (pain was in my right buttock). In exploring it, I see how it is tied to the hips and can affect nerves and sciatica. It all reinforces the importance of core and flexibility training in addition to our running.koby925 said:On the injury front, the steroids (Prednezone) have done wonders for the associated leg pain with my back issues. I may run a little this weekend. In researching a bit more, I see that pinched nerve or sciatica in the back is often really Piriformis Syndrome. Which is related to the hip turning and ties in the back, legs, etc. With my hip issues a couple years ago, I was already wondering if this back/leg stuff is related. Especially since the leg issue acted up after running in ice and snow. Which, by the way, I will never do again.
I agree. And it helps mentally too.I believe that by pushing the body beyond the desired race pace, the actual race pace is that much easier to run since the body has adapted to even greater stress.
I don't, but I just got an email the other day for a 10 mile trail race in February. Called the Psycho Wyco run. This is by a lake where I grew up. They have a 20 miler and a 50k also.Anybody got any races coming up? I'm running a 5K tomorrow morning. Conditions look good. I'd like to improve on my 19:05 for earlier this month. Hell, if I don't break 19 I'll be pissed.![]()
Dirty Love 10K on Valentine's Day. It's 99% on single track trails and this time of year it's anyone's guess what the trek will be like. I'm not even Mini-Duck. I'm like Mini-Mini Duck Jr. I love trail running, but I don't think I've done anything > 11 miles on strictly trails yet. I needed something different once it became obvious the sub 18 5K wasn't going to happen. Still proud of the 18:18 I posted, but with hind sight absolutely everything went right that day. I may venture back to them if I get my weight down enough to see how much impact that has, but I think my speed days are behind me.Man, you're east coast version of Duck lately. .I'm surprised to read this. You're only in your mid-30s, right? Plus, you've only started increasing your mileage for the last year or so. Good thing about trail races (at least around here) is that there are often multiple distances at each race, so you can experiment with different distances or work your way up if you'd like. One local company that puts on 25 or so events per year usually has something like a 10K, Half, 20 miler, Marathon, and 50K at each race. Some have other random distances like 5 miler, 22 miler, 30K, stuff like that. Just depends on what makes sense for the trails they're using that weekend. At this point I usually stick to the marathon or 50K at their events, but I used to do halfs, 30Ks, etc, and every once in awhile will throw one of those in.I'm not even Mini-Duck. I need to make up my mind about one thing though. Am I going to focus on trail running? or distance road races? I think I'm leaning former now and latter later, but we'll see how my run at a sub 90 half in May goes. Trying my best not to think beyond that right now, but every time I'm out on the trails I fail and start thinking about trail ultras.

I've read how the increased mileage will benefit shorter distance running in the long term, but convincing me of this right now isn't going to happen. We'll see where my mindset, and times, are when I shift focus back to shorter distances again...One of my buddies emailed me about an inaugural race this November where we do most of our trail running, distances are half, full, and 50K. I told him he is allowed to talk to me about this two days after my half in May, but I think you can guess where my mind is thinking about this race.Good thing about trail races (at least around here) is that there are often multiple distances at each race, so you can experiment with different distances or work your way up if you'd like. Just gives a nice variety. Plus, think of all the new PRs you can set running these random distances!
I doesn't seem like I good idea to me, but what do I know. I guess it may not matter if we don't get in as a group.pbm - remember that trail race I was telling you to come do with me (the one with the triple as an option)? Its the day before Broad Street.I'm not skipping it (it's too good to miss), so looks like I'm going to double up; trail half on 4/30 & Broad St on 5/1. This doesn't change anything. You will be an executive, so you go in there and DEMAND an office with a shower, and that you will need a two hour lunch break every day. Wala!Man, my running life may be taking a serious change... A huge opportunity fell in my lap yesterday and already had an interview today. It's still early, but I've got an inside track on a executive position at a different bank.
If this goes down, I'll be back in the office which obviously drastically changes my running habits. This is too big of an opportunity for me and the family to let my current work from home set up to sway my decision.
Excited and terrified!

Atta boy Chief, sometimes it just takes one run like that to get you fired up and back in the groove. And I just figured out who you are on Strava, glad you finally joined us!So ate a greasy burger, onion rings, and fries for lunch - not exactly the best lunch for a tempo run. Great start to the season! I think you should be thinking about sub 18 too.Freezer Burn 5K
Starting coming down with a cold yesterday started to really feel like ####. My shakeout run was so bad yesterday that I almost decided to make it private on strava. I was seriously bummed that I wasn't going to be 100% for this 5K because conditions were looking great. Woke up this morning and my resting heart rate was elevated about 15 beats but it's only a 5k so I'll just give it a go.
I raced hard and was pretty pleased with the results.
Mile 1 - 5:55
Mile 2 - 6:05
Around 2 1/2 I caught 2nd place who went out too fast apparently. Everyone was cheering for me to pass him because he was gassed...I was thinking that he wasn't the only one! But I dug a little deeper and passed him pretty easily...he was blowing up.
Mile 3 - 6:06
.13 (long course) - 5:20 pace
Finished 18:49 tying my PR but with the length of the course it was actually a 4 second a mile PR (6:00 pace). 2/378 over all and 1/40 in my age group. I'm happy.

Really impressed how you just crushed your marathon and then just rolled right back into training without missing a beat.A bigger mileage week for me with some quality mixed in.
M: 1/2 mile swim (went late after teaching a night class)
T: 11 miles easy (8:28/mi, HR-143)
W: off
Th: 10 miles w/4 tempo miles (7:35/mi, HR-160)
F: 12 miles w/8 light tempo (8:06/mi, HR-145)
S: 7 miles recovery (8:40/mi, HR-137)
S: 20 miles easy (8:23/mi, HR-144)
60 miles for the week. 199 miles for the month. Still a lot of training weeks to go, but I'm liking where the HR is at already. Marathon HR tends to move from the 150s to 160s and some 170s near the end.
Other than SteveC (who is indeed from another planet), even the highest mileage runners here are barely running over an hour a day on average. The average American watches almost 5 hours of TV a day. Time shouldn't be an issue for most people, merely an excuse.Things I learned today:
1. I have no idea how you guys have this much time to run that many miles.

For me, it's the new life as a professor - no classes on T, Th; a single noon class on F. But in keeping with your thought, I have no idea how I managed to do it before, given work and family. A big trade-off was sleep.Things I learned today:

Exactly. I run about 6 to 7 hours a week. But of course, I do that pretty much every week. Admittedly it's a bit of an of obsession. I'll run early. I'll run late. I make time for the things I enjoy doing.
