had a dream that i bandited (is that a word?) a race that @gruecd was leading

he came flying up, looking like Prefontaine but with a beard and shaggier hair.

i fell in with him for a few seconds, then he disappeared... literally ... in to the mist.  then i got tackled by angry fans because i wasn't wearing a race bib.

:D   But that was no mist: It was a light sweat shower spraying off of @gruecd's back.  The man sweats like nobody's business.

Just did a point to point run. That was fun. Rode with my wife to drop our daughter off and then ran home from there as I checked it to be about 4 miles.

80 degrees but dew point of 72 was awful, felt like running through water. But, pretty run through an area I drive all the time but have never run through and enjoyed it. Started as an easy run but let myself go faster toward the end. Finished 3.8 at just over 9:00.

Calf feels good, looking forward to the race in a week and a half. Not sure I'll break 25 minutes but I'm pretty sure I'll break the initial goal of 8:30.

Yeah, I'm about sick of this weather. I ran last night when it was 89 with a dew point of 70 or so.

And Saturday morning when I'm supposed to run 11 the forecast is 71 with a dew point of 70 or so. Awesome.

what is your guys go-to meal the night before a big race or long run?
I usually eat a big lunch the day before. Almost always pasta with a meat sauce.

The night before I'll eat a lighter meal. Maybe something like 4-6 ounces of steak and a baked potato.

I will also start cutting down my fiber intake on Wednesday or so.

BTW, speaking of this. My sweating during runs is pretty normal and if anything, not that bad I think.  But afterward, it's out of control. I have to wait 15-20 minutes from when I'm done to even try and shower and even then, I still find I'm sweating even after 15 minute cold shower. Today it was nuts and I was still sweating almost an hour after I finished despite a couple showers and the fan on.

Is this normal? Anything to help with it because it's really annoying?

I agree with Chief that's it's normal.  I also think you might be sweating more than you think while running but it's quickly evaporating in the hot sun and moisture is being whisked away from your body in the air by your motion.

Is it the Kung Pao?

This.  Cut back fiber Wednesday or Thursday.  Eat a bigger lunch the day before, then a lighter dinner that's easy to digest.  If the race starts early, I'll try and eat dinner earlier to try and give everything time to move through before start time.

For me it's typically salmon or chicken and white rice and a glass of red wine.  Then a nip of Makers Mark at bedtime to try and help me get to sleep.

Ok, and now as I've been thinking about this race coming up, I'm trying to plan for it as it's my first one ever.

1)  Yes or no to music?  I run with it most of the time but I've gone a few times without it (music stopped streaming or headphones weren't charged).  On the race site it says it's strongly discouraged but it is allowed.  I think I'll be fine either way but wondering what you guys think of it.

2)  Do I want to run any kind of warm up before?  If so, do you just do this at the site?  And how much/how fast?

3)  Should I look at my pace throughout?  I'm thinking I want to see it early on to make sure I don't come out too fast and wear myself out, especially being the first time.  But after that, I'm thinking I just want to run.  But, with my goal of 8:03, if I'm close, do I want to know if I need to push any more?

My answers depend on whether you're dressed in a gorilla suit or not.

I like the silence and just taking the time to look around and check stuff out.

2)  Do I want to run any kind of warm up before?  If so, do you just do this at the site?  And how much/how fast? For me, I'll run a slow mile or two before a 5k. And usually at the site. And by slow, I'm talking really slow. Want to save as much energy as I can for the race.

I have run two 5k's, and had an idea of the pace I wanted to run in each based on training. So I had my watch set on pace, with a mindset of "don't let that number go over xx:xx time". So I knew if I kept it under my goal pace, I would be ok. But I am certainly no expert on pacing, but it has worked well for the 2 that I have run.

My answers depend on whether you're dressed in a gorilla suit or not.
The 5K coming up next Sunday (not this Sunday) is not in a gorilla suit.  The 5K 3 weeks after that will be in the gorilla suit.  This first race is by myself, my first race ever, on a flat course, and with me wanting to get the best time I can.

And one last question:  Do I want to do a "race" type run before to see what I can do and how it goes?  Do it this weekend if I do?

totally normal

i sweat buckets. on the warmup walk to start, during the run, on the cooldown run after.. waiting to get in the shower.. in the shower.. after the shower.

it's a good thing

1. I recommend no to music so you can hear everything going on including runners behind you.  Obviously, though, it's a personal choice.

2. Many of us need a mile or two to loosen up every run but you might not need that.  Do you usually feel good right from the beginning? If not, how long does it take?  Just walking around before the start might be enough.

3. I probably check my pace about 20 times during a 5K.

Similar to others, a moderately light dinner - never red meat or salads, which don't digest as well (for me).  Chicken and noodles is about it. Goal = morning 'business' on race day.

For a long race where it matters, the carbo loading is two nights before the race and on into the morning before.  That's the food that gets digested to fuel your race.  After that, better to eat small portions and snack during the day.

I do music during race.  Most runners will not.  Do what makes you feel most comfortable.

Others have covered this - but do make sure that you pay attention to the start time and plan accordingly for your warm-up.  You want to get to the race early enough that you are not scrambling with bathroom, bib, watch settings, gear etc.  But don't get there super early and run 2 miles an hour before race begins.  I like to get there 45 minutes early ideally.  First 15 minutes is confirming start location, registration, etc.  Then 25 to 30 minutes out begin warm up.  Get to start line 5 to 10 minutes before race.

I agree with your thinking about being measured for the first mile, but after that, you just have to find that comfortable; slightly uncomfortable pace based on your breathing; not the watch.

2)  Do I want to run any kind of warm up before?  If so, do you just do this at the site?  And how much/how fast?  Unless you are young, its probably best to warmup to prevent pulling any muscles, especially on a cool morning.  Given what I know about you, I would recommend no more than a mile and start slowly and try to ramp up to your race pace.  If you can, I like to do a couple quick bursts of 5-10 seconds each where its picking up the pace quite a bit faster than race pace.  This will hopefully get the blood moving.  Obviously, you need to be gradual with this and don't want to pull any muscles, so listen to your body!

I probably look at my pace every 0.1 miles for the first half mile until I settle in.  But regularly looking at your watch is completely normal.

2)  Do I want to run any kind of warm up before?  If so, do you just do this at the site?  And how much/how fast?  Some warm-up is good, though the approach varies for everyone (my own warm-up changes on whether I arrive well enough in advance).  Most of it is very slow, but some short accelerations (faster than race pace) can be good to get the legs stretched out and get the mind psyched up for the effort ahead.

I'll save my long sermon about running by heart rate instead of pace, but being in unfamiliar territory, you probably will want to check it.  But don't overdo it.  Once things settle in, you can gauge by the runners around you.  Don't look near the end - focus on the finish and the crowd support and push it in hard with a strong stride.

Thanks, guys.  That helps a ton.

I won't do music.  I'll do a little running with a few sprints but that's it.  I generally feel fine whenever I start and I plan on coming out a little slower and building so that's ok.  I'm going to shoot for an 8:30 pace to start and kick it up by the first half mile or so.  I probably won't look much beyond that.

Been trending less on music use in training and at races. I warm up with music and sometimes keep one in leading up start. Then lock in to some tunes for awhile depending on race length and then take them out when it really starts to hurt so I focus.

Warm up is helpful, sloow jog and key mobility stuff for any personal things you need to get loose. No static stuff for me but lots of hip openers, some high knees and arm circles.

I would have my watch tell me splits at .5m on a 5k and leave it at 1m for anything else and periodically look at HR more than pace but inevitably look at both.

I smell conspiracy.

I'm so out of shape I'm embarrassed to have the temerity to open this thread.  Though I do appreciate the natural 36EEs.  :D

@tri-man 47 and @Juxtatarot, just tagged you in the Chicago thread as I'll be there next Wednesday night. Don't  we have others here from there?  Would love to meet up for dinner if so.
Any chance you are going for a run Thursday AM? I have to go downtown Chicago for MD appt at 830 and it would be convenient to go then.  Otherwise, keep me posted on Wednesday night plans.  I'm a maybe at the moment.

I was holding out a shred of hope for MRI results to provide the "A-ha! we found the problem" moment, but alas that has passed for my calf.  Got a call this morning from the PA of the foot/ankle ortho specialist who's reviewed the MRI...  Looks good; no problems!   ugh.

His suspicion based on etiology of symptoms is that it's compartment syndrome related and that my surgery from back in 2015 didn't go far enough.   Not the answer I wanted to hear - not because I don't like compartment syndrome, but because even at the time of my compartment syndrome surgery, the surgeon (world renowned expert on this condition) was a little skeptical that that was the source of my problems (primarily because my pain was in one leg; not both).  Next step is to do formal testing for exertional compartment syndrome in downtown Chicago and see what's up.  Here's a linkee that lines up pretty closely with my symptoms.

I've shared my ups and downs with this thing and this is a down day.

I guess it's still good to get affirmation that whatever pain my running is inflicting on the joint hasn't caused damage to bones, tendons or ligaments.  But, I just want to know what the anatomical problem is and frustrating to still not have this.

Probably not, as with my strained calf I'm not running right now.  I actually did intervals on an elliptical in the gym yesterday, and couldn't take back-to-back days of that so hiked up and down the steepest route I could find up Mt. Burdell today.  Back to the elliptical tomorrow :(

Maybe Brony just meets you that morning and gives you a foot massage.  You know, for FBG-old times sake.  Keeping the tradition alive.

bummer, but I can relate.  My MD appt next week may get postponed, but I can't commit to Wednesday night until I see how involved puppy training will be.  I think I'm on night duty the first few days next week.

2 little tidbits to realize how you guys have reeled me in:

1) Had lunch with a good friend today that I don't get to see as often due to his work schedule. He's a bit taller than me, similar type guy, and while still looking skinny, he's at his highest weight he's ever been at 228 (he's 6'4"). I spent half of lunch telling him how great it's been since I started running and trying to convince him to give it a shot. He talked about not having time and I just told him to do 15-30 min per day for a few weeks and see how he feels. He might give it a shot.

2) It was hot as hell today and I didn't have a chance to get out anyway. But, even with limited time tonight and kids getting ready for bed and stuff, I just really felt the urge to get out and at least do a little. Ran a mile, felt good, came home. Just really needed to get out for a little bit. Never felt like that before.

That's all.

Found a 5.6k to run tomorrow morning in Berryville, VA.  They had me at "flat course"

I have other priorities right now, but if goals are accomplished over the next 7 months I'd be game sometime after Boston 19.  Always wanted to do one of these and the ultra runners around here have problems herding enough cattle for a team.

We put an FBG team together for the Bourbon Chase several years ago ...good times!  (A few less active/inactive members continue to do it with other runners.)  As the team crossed the finish line, they announced (on our request) "from the internet, team Useless Without Bourbon."  We had guys from Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Florida, Alabama, Kentucky ..and pigskinliquors driving in from Texas just for the after-party.

I leave soon for Michigan for another installment of Dances With Dirt in Hell, Michigan.  Sadly, our fearless leader, @2Young2BBald, can't join us due to insurance work in Florida.  Temps will be in the 90s.  Very ouch.

It's been I think 14 years, but I remember running through Hell - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-SndB7PV0s.  It was probably 90+ and I was on about 30 minutes of beer and whiskey soaked sleep.  How I finished that thing is beyond me...

EDIT: just looked it up on active.com, a 33:22 on the 4.8 mile race?  That can't be true.  Although I did get beaten by a 50 year old woman.  That part makes a whole lot more sense.

squeezed mine in this morning before the sun came up

74 degrees, dewpoint at 69, 95% humidity

sweat through my shirt, shorts and shoes. high of NINETY today. it doesn't hit 90 here almost ever.

saw people out there at lunch running. considered pulling my car over to have them hop in. thinking of going around and collecting their corpses after work.

It's nuts here today.  1 degree off record high with a temp of 95 although my car was just reading 101.  I'm actually bringing my son to soccer in a little over an hour and was going to run while he's there and think there's a good chance I may not live.  Definitely going to be an "easy" run.
