Awesome weekend for JShare, Juxtatarot, Gianmarco and MAC! Lots of great running fellas.

Great pace on that 8 miler Juxt!
Just catching up on the epic weekend around here, nice job fellas!

This is such a real thing. Even for just the 5k this morning, as I'm getting closer to the end, I was thinking about how much it would suck if I fell off my pace and had to post about it here. There was no chance I was slowing down at the finish and have you guys see that.

I thought of @SFBayDuck briefly as well, but only for a moment because there wasn't a hill in sight at the end.
So true, the race report is a huge part of during race motivation.

I've noticed my best workouts usually come with a negative split, sometimes significant, and I still finish with gas left in the tank.  I figured by starting off with 6:15's that if things were clicking I could ramp it up in the second half.  If things weren't then I would be less susceptible to a mid-race flameout.  Even with my mistake mile 1 starting off too slow I still only needed to get down to about a 6 min/mile avg miles 8-12 to put me in a spot to kick it in for sub 80.  Objective was to find that pace between miles 7.5 and 8.5 after the shorter dirt/boardwalk section and before the big section of gravel.  I lost focus early on during this section, which really eliminated any margin for error then the side stitches started hitting shortly after I was starting to find that pace.  I'm guessing my breathing was out of whack and the cold temp's I obviously wasn't used to this year caused the problem.
Nice race @MAC_32!  Although :finger: about the bolded. ;)

Still dealing with my injuries, especially the calf, so only really hiking right now while getting treatment 2x a week.  It's started to improve the past few days, and I got in a few decent efforts over the past three days good for almost 3,400' of climbing over 17 miles.  So at least trying to keep the climbing legs in a little shape, even if the rest of me is taking on the shape of round.  Heading back in for treatment today, then on the road for a few days in San Antonio so will probably just rest with the hope I can get back to some running this weekend.

@SayWhat?, I don't think my buddy is doing Rio del Lago so I should be free to help you out if you'd like (we're talking tonight, but he still hasn't registered and I think it's sold out with a waitlist now).  Considering the above paragraph I'd say pacing isn't likely, although we'll see what the next 4 weeks brings.  But more than happy to crew for sure and help with logistics, as I plan on heading up there.

I was wondering how your recovery was going, so this was a timely post.  It sounds as though you're taking a smart and cautious approach, and that you're seeing some improvement each and every day.  That's encouraging.  Just like the ultras, slow and steady!

Yeah, I thought about your buddy as a I did receive an email not too long ago that the registration for RdL was now full.  That's kind of a bummer if he didn't sign up.  I don't doubt I'll take advantage of your presence if you decide to make the trek to the race.  I think I mentioned I lost my pacer for miles 50-75 due to an invitation to an impromptu wedding for one of his good friends, so it'll just be my wife and I making the trip and she's planning to pace me from Overlook to the finish.  Should be a fun time.  Well keep me posted as to your plans as we can coordinate from there, and good luck getting back into the swing of things!

...and when you feel great at the half DO NOT pick up the pace.  That feeling is a mirage.  If you fall to temptation regret in the form of a mile 18-20 wall is going to smack you in the face.  Then continue for 6-8 miles.  Trust your pacing and if you're feeling strong at miles 20-22 be proud, you ran it right, unlike most everyone else.  If you feel like you can pick things up at that point, and only at that point, then by all means.
Or you could always start fast and limp to the end like my last (PR) marathon.

Ah, fall

Starting to feel a whole lot better than a week or two ago. Of course this is day 22 back from 2 weeks off.

Finally went to the doctor for a heel that had been hurting me since April-ish since I wanted to be sure to get my Tri done before being told not to run.  I have Achilles Tendinitis...no running for at least 4 weeks, they gave me some splint to sleep in and im about to go pick up some anti-inflammatory pills.  At least its fairly easily treatable.

My strava run is gonna look funny tonight.

Went to my 12 year old son's soccer practice. Every Tuesday they have a fitness day. My wife usually takes him so she can get a run in, but with some work stuff I had to take him.

The coach takes the kids down a paved trail and does a mix of short jogging, sprints, hills, and mixed in are squats, crunches, stuff like that. My son LOVES soccer, but never wants to work hard to actually be really good at it. I've talked to him for the last two years on how the great ones are always working hard at their craft. And if he wants to be great, he's going to have to push himself.

Normally he is a pretty lazy kid. He will run once in awhile with me, but at games or practice he always looks to be wiped out or going half-###.

So tonight, we are running this trail, and he is consistently at the front of the group - top 3 or 4 - for ALL the runs. The hills, the sprints, the slow jogging. He never stops moving. Meanwhile, the other kids are jacking around, half of them are walking toward the back, and he is just killing it.

After the training, I look at him and say:

"Son, this is the most proud you have ever made me while watching you in sports. Remember all the talk we have had about working hard to be great? That was you tonight."

He grins and says: "Really?"

Me: "What you just did was simulate a full half of one of your games, and you just killed it. Your fitness is better than you think."

He smiles: "Yeah, you are right daddy."

Me:

A really great night. So great.

No lie, this is my son. And he's had nights exactly like you described.

And then the next week, he's half-assing it again

Its not taper unless head cold hits me.  :wall:

Chicago looking toasty on Sunday.....high temp of 78.  Low around 60.  Hoping it isn't overly humid.

Hope its easily treatable for you.

Hasn't been for me.  :sadbanana:

It's ain't race week if you don't feel like ####!

Looks like you'll be running with the SI between 110 & 120. Not ideal but not too bad either. Dew point is the gonna be around 51...that's pretty good. Well, that's good compared to what I'm used anyway.

I think I may have been wrong.  Tried using the splint last night and definitely couldnt sleep with it like they recommended.  Ill try to wear it at night before sleep but it is not comfortable!

Easy 3-mile slog yesterday afternoon.  First run back post marathon, and legs were predictable heavy.

Quit my CrossFit gym and joined Orangetheory Fitness instead.  I feel like the CrossFit programming is/was really geared towards people who could be there every day, and everything kind of built off previous workouts.  It really wasn't conducive to just dropping in for a workout a couple of times per week.  OTF, on the other hand, is all standalone workouts, and it will give me a good HIIT workout twice per week to compliment my (mostly long, slow) running.

I went this morning, and it became really clear, really fast that my post-marathon body wasn't ready for the intensity yet.  Backed it off a bit and made it through the workouts.  Nice way to start the morning.

Traveling to Dallas tomorrow morning for the Packers/Cowboys game on Sunday and a work conference next week.  Looking forward to going for some runs in a new place.

If it helps, you're way ahead of me and I'm only on the heels of a half.  I'm playing touch football tomorrow, but it'll probably be at half speed - if that.  At this point, I'll be surprised if I get going again by Monday.  We'll see how the weekend goes - it became overtly obvious by Wednesday that I pushed myself to more limits than I thought I did and my body was begging for a break.

On the plus side, with no run plan for Sunday I'll have plenty of time follow @SteelCurtain and several others as they kick Chicago's ###.  :towelwave:

It's so funny, now that my first race is over, my whole outlook on just running is very different.

First, I'm kind of glad I was as anal as I was looking at times and trying to figure things out in the beginning. I really do think it made a difference and I feel like I learned a lot.  And, it is also very clear you guys were all right in telling me to just run and add miles as there's no way I could have gotten anywhere close to that without that base. I'm still amazed at how smoothly it went and how I went much faster than I would have predicted based on everything I had done to that point.

That said, that "pressure" is gone and I feel very comfortable with where I am that I can just really enjoy and build however much I want. I don't need those time notifications anymore. And I don't feel like I need to push for most runs. Even though I signed up for this 15k in a couple months and it'll be my first "long" race, I already feel much better going into it. Will look at some training schedules but for the most part will just keep running miles and see how things go.

Just did almost 6 miles and took it easy. Without even realizing it, I started getting faster from mile 4 on and things felt nice and loose. It's a great feeling knowing I can now run that distance pretty easily and not be tired at all at the end.  And this ended up being a pace that would have been hard for me just a month ago.

Anyway, looking at some race equivalents, it looks like I should be able to do this 15k at an 8:30 pace. I think I can manage that although with 2 months to work at it, I'm going to see if I can get that down even more.  But even if not, I'm actually ok. That 5k result for me was a bigger deal to me than I initially realized and put a lot of the rest of any of my running in perspective.

I'm definitely hooked, though. Thanks, #######s.

@gianmarco - you went through about my first 3 years of running planning, anxiety, learning and execution (without the speed) in a couple months

You will.  Now's the time when you will keep beating the calculators and projections as long as you stay consistent and healthy.  The bell curve flattens at some point, but you're nowhere near the top.

A word about the calculators...

When you're trying to figure how fast you can run a longer race the calculator makes the assumption that you've taken the time to train for the specific race in question. It also assumes your 5K is about the top end of your speed. If you're using your first race as the input neither of things are probably going to be very accurate.

At this point @gianmarco you most likely don't have the endurance for the 15K but on the other hand, you've got more speed potential than your first 5K could possibly show. That's why you just to need to run more and reassess. ;)

Looking forward to picking up Steel Curtain at the airport in a few hours!  We'll meet Brony for a beer, then head into the city. (Juxt is busy or we'd loop him in, too.)  I'm trying to identify a good restaurant with jumbo chicken breasts and buckets of rice.

Good luck this weekend @Steel Curtain!

You are gonna kill it. Can't wait to read your report. Chicago is a GREAT race to run. Enjoy Boys Town. Make sure you look around and take it all in.

Do we have a tracking number for @Steel Curtain?  The race goes right past my apartment building at mile 14 and 17 so maybe ill go shout things at him.
Sorry I didn't think to include you in for our gathering!  What a great night, though.  Picked SC up at the airport, then met Brony for a beer.  Picked our way through Friday rush hour traffic (scenic route through my neighborhood) and on to dinner on the west side.  2Young and gruecd- same place we ate several years ago.  Drove through a couple of race sections and got our guy to his hotel.  Go SC!!!

The wind shifted within .5 miles of my run and came out of the west. Pouring buckets of rain. I was lucky to be near a strip mall, so I ran under the overhang for the next .25 mile. I then turned north and ran a south to north route for a few miles, and it was glorious having 20 mile gusts and cold rain in my left ear. <_<

But, once I hit about the 5 mile mark, the rain stopped and was a nice cool run the rest of the way. Glad it's over though.

Ran a one mile race with the kids this morning. This thing was kinda small when I first ran it 3 years ago (only time I truly raced it :sadbanana:  ), but man has it grown. It’s a big school fundraiser now - cool to see them shut down Main St just for this.

My kids are funny. 11yr old was working much harder than my 8yr old who was jogging and complaining about going so slow. I was waiting for the older one to deck him.  I made them stick together and finished in 8:38. I know the 8 yr old could get into the 7s.

No worries, next year perhaps!  Where did you guys eat?  I live right in Greek town.  Good luck @Steel Curtain.  Maybe ill track you in the morning and head out to cheer you on when you are running past...if I do ill throw on my Bettis Jersey to try to stand out.

We ate at Pompeii on Taylor St., just east of Ashland (right on the course).  Good food; easy logistics.  Afterwards we drove through Chinatown to give SC a visualization of that area and then drove the last couple miles up Michigan Ave. and the turn up Roosevelt Rd.

Brony is interested in a possible 5K at month-end ...maybe 10/28 or 11/4?  The 28th has options in Chicago or Villa Park.  The 4th has options in Chicago, LaGrange Park, or Arlington Heights (Brony's turf).  If you're maybe interested, If you're interested and we pick a suburban race, I could drive us out (I'm in Oak Park).

Would normally take you up on that offer but I am getting married in Charleston SC the weekend of the 28th and then heading straight on a honeymoon and wont be back til the 12th.   Also battling off Achilles Tendenitis.  If its feeling better and anyone is running anything after the 12th Id be interested in joining!

Great to meet up with Steel Curtain and Tri Man yesterday and I know Steel  will do great on the marathon tomorrow !  Very cool of Tri to take him around the city this weekend. Good dudes on this board

Thank guys.  It's been two pretty bad nights of sleep here in Chicago but I'm gonna give this my best shot.

Fun meeting @Brony and @tri-man 47 Friday night.  And if you ever need a marathon tour guide, @tri-man 47 gets 5 stars!

thanks for the support and I'll try to represent all of you as I hope to break my PR of 3:21:04.
