Ran a 10k - Official Thread (8 Viewers)

Go Steel Curtain!  Great morning here in Chi-town - crisp, cool air and no breeze.  Chief's morning storm blasted thru here mid-afternoon, and then winds were very strong at night, but all is good now.

That’s a little faster start than planned, no?
A bit fast, but not damaging.  In contrast, the young CC coach from my school, whom I know well, is running her first marathon ....based on a recent 1:36 HM, and from what I've heard, she expects to also run around 3:20 (I'd guess a little slower).  But her first 5K was a 6:51/mi pace, which is a sub 3:00 marathon.  I fear that's an "oops."

Yeah and I think he has the fitness to do it, just hope that the weather doesn't get too bad at the end of the race.
Going to get up to 65, I think they said.

His next 5k split was 7:33, so overall 7:29 right now. Hopefully settling in there and can hold it as it's definitely good for a PR.

Dog sitting this weekend with house to myself. Brisket finishing up, coffee on, marathon on TV, puppy on lap and marathon app fired up. Women leaders just went past my old apartment.

Heard Malcolm Gladwell on bs podcast talking about the kipchoge distance... How long could you maintain the pace of the elite runners? I might be good for half mile at my current age and state

From kitchen to living room.... MAYBE bedroom.

7:30 for 5k. Coming up on halfway mark in about 25 minutes.  Looking good so far.

Every person I know in the race has a jacked up half marathon split. Something is wacky between the 20k & half mat me thinks.

Was just out there near mile 17, trying to see our hero while sporting my Jerome Bettis jersey so he would see me when I yelled “Lets go @Steel Curtain but it wasnt meant to be.  I had to have seen him, but just didnt see his number.   One person did sprint by and they were a blur, so I assume that was him.

It's strange, on the app the splits look fine but on the website from my desktop, the 20k and half splits are way off.

Another great 7:30 split for him at 30K.  Coming up on mile 20 in a bit.

7:26/7:33/7:30/7:28/7:33/7:30 so far.

Now the real race begins. I’ve seen him hold on to strong pacing at this stage of the race. Confident he’s going to rock this.

Slowed down at this last 40k split to 7:55.  But, even at that pace, he'll finish at 3:19 which is easily good for a PR.

He's in the last mile now......watching the next 7 minutes!

We ate at Pompeii on Taylor St., just east of Ashland (right on the course).  Good food; easy logistics.  Afterwards we drove through Chinatown to give SC a visualization of that area and then drove the last couple miles up Michigan Ave. and the turn up Roosevelt Rd.

Brony is interested in a possible 5K at month-end ...maybe 10/28 or 11/4?  The 28th has options in Chicago or Villa Park.  The 4th has options in Chicago, LaGrange Park, or Arlington Heights (Brony's turf).  If you're maybe interested, If you're interested and we pick a suburban race, I could drive us out (I'm in Oak Park).
I'd join you guys if you pick a suburban one. (Assuming @Brony is OK with the AG competition.)

Way to go SteelCurtain!  You said you'd run consistent splits, and you're a man of your word.  Congrats on the PR!!!    :pickle:

A detail already addressed years ago, but heck, SC was done so fast, he'd of still had time to get married after the race. Just sayin'.

Thanks guys.  This race was an absolute grind and nothing was certain until I got to mile 25.  I'll get a RR done relatively quickly but know you guys were with me the entire time.  Thanks for all your support!

Running at my son's soccer practice tonight and was going to get a long run in. My previous max is 7.1 and planned to try and get 8, maybe 9. Was up to almost 6 when some "heat" lightning showed up in the distance and they pulled everyone off the fields and sent us home. Ugh.

I was feeling GREAT. I hit the 4 mile mark and everything all of a sudden got even easier. It was honestly as if I was putting no effort in at all. I know I had at least 3 more miles in me when I had to stop. It was also strange because my stride felt different, almost like just kind of gliding along, which was new.

I will say that my legs felt really tired and sore all last week and had to be from the 5K. Today, they felt the best they ever have. In fact, my knee with the ACL repair almost one year ago felt 100% normal for the first time ever.

Very encouraging day.

That's awesome.

On a side note, I had my ACL repair years ago, and to this day it really gives me no trouble when I run. As a matter of fact, I would say the running has probable helped it in that my quads and hamstrings are a lot stronger now than they were when I started really running 4 years ago. So you should be in great shape with your knee.

Oh, it hasn't given me any problems at all and I've actually healed really well. No issues with pain or swelling.

And most of the time, I don't even think about it. But the knee still feels "different" if I pay attention to it.  Hard to explain but I'm sure you know what I mean. Well, last night, that sensation was gone.  And yes, I attribute it to stronger muscles in my leg for sure.

10/28 and 11/4 weekends both work.   I can fake my age group - might have better luck in the 25-29 category, right?

My daughter wants to do the Hot Chocolate 5K on Sunday 10/29.  Why? She likes hot chocolate and the "free" jacket.  No interest in running for her.  I'm working hard to talk her out of it since I know she won't want that jacket when I wake her up at 5:30 so that we can get to the corral by 7:30 and wait for 90 minutes. Pass.

Steel Curtain, congrats on a great race in Chicago.  I was just telling my wife the other day that I'd like to run that race again sometime.  Being in Milwaukee, it's super easy logistically for me.

Personally, I feel mostly recovered from the marathon nine days ago.  I'm in Dallas this week (for Packers game this past Sunday and work conference tomorrow and Thursday), and I've run each of the past 3 days down here.  Yesterday I gutted out a slow, sweaty run around White Rock Lake in 95-degree heat.  There's also a nice, paved trail (Katy Trail) that's five minutes away from my Airbnb.  It's 3-1/2 miles each way, and it's a long, gradual uphill all the way north, which allows you to push the pace a bit on the way back south.  Literally hundreds of people out there walking, running, rollerblading, etc. when I ran it on Sunday morning.  Did an easy 5 this morning, then hitting Orange Theory this afternoon and hopefully heading back out to the lake for another easy 9-miler tomorrow morning before my conference.  I've got my 8-hour trail run on 11/4, so the plan for this weekend is to do an easy 5 hours on Saturday and another 3 hours on Sunday.  TBD how the legs will handle that.

I'll scope out our options.
