Ran a 10k - Official Thread (22 Viewers)

I added mine.  I’ve got Feb and March of next year already set too.  I think I’m doing a twilight beach run (15k) in Daytona in January to get me ready for Half at the end of February (yes..I’m going to try again and hopefully not lose another toenail in the process).  I love running on that beach.  So nice.

ETA:  not doing my normal Thanksgiving Day run (8k), but prolly hit a 5k close to home for funsies.

Few friends of mine are heading out there for that - they've done it before and had a blast.
Yeah I'm going with work colleagues as a group and they tell me I have to wear a costume?!  For my first HM ever?!  I can feel the regret building already...

Btw, figured I might throw this out there for some of you that might be interested.

My buddy just visited Iceland this past weekend for the first time.  There were some cheap tickets available a couple months ago so he booked it to get away for a few days with his wife.  It turns out it was during "Culture Night" which is the biggest party of the year in Reykjavik.  It is also the same day that they run the marathon (and HM, 10k, 3k, and relay race).  He just happened to be there for it and said it was absolutely amazing (and would have run it had he known ahead of time).

If I'm going to do a destination race, this may be on my short list.

It's flat, scenic, cool, and a great atmosphere apparently.

Under the spirit of better late than never, I just added a 2018 page to the FBG Race Calendar (there is also a link in Ned's opening post) and entered the one race I've signed up for.  I'll add a few more when I sign up for them.

Several years ago, we were all pretty good about this and it was a nice resource.
So, this just got me looking at my races and thinking about my 10K coming up in a little over 2 weeks.  I forgot who, but one of you recommended getting one in to get an idea of where I'm at and help with my HM.  This will be my first "tune up" race.

I'm assuming I'm not trying to run this all out, right?  Do I use this to try my HM pace and see how it goes?  Or am I still trying to run this faster?  It's 4 weeks before the HM.

I was there a couple weekends ago and did a great hike in the east part of the island.  I posted a few photos on my Strava.  Which don't do the island justice for how stunningly beautiful it is.

And while flights are cheap, the island is crazy-expensive.  Hotel was USD450/night (for a vanilla Raddison) and fish & chips for four cleared USD125...

ETA:  Oh and FWIW I did do two morning runs (also on Strava) which share about 5km of the half/marathon course along the waterfront.  Quite enjoyable.

I always go all out for tune up races with the exception of being a little fatigued from not doing a proper taper.  I really can't help it.

Edit to add:  My 5K, 10K and half marathon PRs were all set at tune ups.

I echo @Juxtatarot - at that point in the training schedule I wouldn't taper (except take the day before off), but the race is all I got.  Just don't schedule anything intense for a few days after - maintain the mileage but it's all easy until your body gives you the thumbs up again.

Regarding the mileage, @pbm107 taught me to front-load the race week.  I think that works well.  And I don't do any fast running.  I figure the race provides enough training benefit.

Totally agree - my training schedule often varies week-to-week from the standard models, but Monday is a popular off day for many of them with some sort of quality either Tu + Th or Wed only.

Tune up race week, don't skip Mon and if you're doing any quality then it's Tu - Wed and Th are easy.

By coincidence, I was in Vegas while this event was going on last year.  I recall it being a laid back, fun, festive vibe, but I don't remember seeing any costumes.

This is one of those destination races I’d like a shot at.

Hmm, going to have to rethink this then. While I did a 15k last December, this will be my first real distance race. And without knowing what I can realistically do, I was planning on trying my hopeful HM pacing (or close to it) to see how it feels. Plus, this race is the morning after I come back from Vegas for a few days so leading into the race could be interesting.

I'm not worried about overdoing it if I race it hard but I guess I'm just wondering what the true benefit ends up being other than an obvious hard workout and race.

If there's one thing I'm worried about with the HM is finding a pace I can hold for that distance.  I do have some race pace miles scheduled in the near future that will help with that.

I guess I better start getting mentally ready for this 10k coming up  :oldunsure:

If you race this then you'll have a better idea what your actual HMP is right now.  Then you'll still have time to test that pace between this race and your half.

Have any of you guys used downloaded workouts to your Garmin?  Gonna give it a try on my run today.  Gotta do repeats of 1-minute hill, 15-sec jog, 30-sec stride.  Thought it might be a pain to keep having to look down at my watch to check the time.  We'll see how it works...

Last week I used it for the first time on quarter mile repeats.  I liked it.  My watch counted down the distance for the intervals and counted down time for the rest intervals.  It didn't show pace which was actually nice because it allowed me to run solely on feel.  It also forced me to shorten the rest intervals which is probably good for me.  I think I'll do it again next time.

Been using it this cycle for speed and tempo and even sometimes to force warmup/cool downs. It beeps and buzzes depending on how you set up the pace ranges and indications or heart rate or distance. I am glad I figured out how to use it to the extent I am.

I think you posted it earlier and it prompted me to look at it.  I set it up for my 45 min tempo run and it made it pretty easy.  The interesting thing also was when I did the 2nd run, it was almost a duplicate of the 1st by sticking to it.  It's pretty easy to do as well.

@tri-man 47, you'll appreciate this.  My coach sent me an email asking if I'd done my workout yet.  I replied and told him that I'm doing it tonight.

His response?

"Word."

Sounds like something that should be hanging out with a woolly mammoth or saber-tooth tiger or something...
One of the best beaches you can visit on the east coast, IMO.  Goes for virtually every beach in our state. :grad:

This is the best my ankle has felt in 2+ years.  3 runs in 4 days and it’s still 100% pain free. Today’s run had nothing to do with anything other than I was just really happy and free - I miss running in these low humidity days so I let my legs go and opened it up on the way home. It was slow, but I’m cool with that.  It’s somethig I’ve had to learn to accept.  I was pushing at the end and I still didn’t sniff my old MP.  Those thoughts creep in, but I’ve lesrned to ignore them and keep going.  Nowere to go but up.

Rehoboth is my favorite race and it’s good timing with how I’m feeling right now.  So I’m going to cautiously increase my volume and keep working on my core work and mtn bike riding (I swear that’s been the best thing for my Achilles).

Great to hear about the ankle progress.  Fingers crossed that you stay that way.

I never did the Rehoboth HM when I lived in DE, but I used to do a bunch of races around Newark and Wilmington.  Pre-internet so I guess they don't count.

@Juxtatarot and @Brony, are we passing on the 9/8 Itasca 5K?  I'd like to catch a race, but I'm indifferent about that one.  We have a local 5K on 9/15, and I'll have Dances with Dirt on 9/22.

@Ned, so awesome to see that you're doing well and getting back at it.

Updated calendar.

Of course JAA does the man's race while I'm just messing around.

Maybe my goal will be half your time?

I guess someone didn't like my 10K race so they just deleted it? :pokey:

ETA -- I'll return the favor and start updating some "goals".

We've got 3 going this weekend!

Good luck on the Tri's @JAA and @-OZ-!!

And good luck on the 10K @OrganizedChaos .  Hope some fresh legs let you get a nice PR and something to build on for the next one.  Can't wait to see how it goes.  You running with a dog or solo?
