Ran a 10k - Official Thread (14 Viewers)

286 miles for me which was a little less than planned but still the most I have run this year.  The schedule had a 10K tune up scheduled for Saturday but my fantasy draft is 9 AM tomorrow so I ran a 6 mile tempo on the treadmill this morning instead.  The tempo was a grind but I got through it. I am happy that August is over.

For the year I am 2 miles behind my 2015 pace but I am in better shape.

I never drink anything on my runs. The only time I do is on Saturdays when I venture out over 14 miles.
I don't get it.  For those of you who choose to not drink on your run...why would you do this to yourselves?

258 miles for me in August on 29 runs.  Up 43% YOY vs. 180 miles in August 2017.

1,829 miles YTD, which means I'll cross over the 2,000-mile mark in September.

"Drink when you are thirsty" - conditions obviously play a role, but I rarely get thristy as long as I stay under 90 mins (12ish miles).  If anything I may drink too many fluids, but I consume them between immediately after my run and about 30-45 mins before the next one.

Even when it's hot and humid like it's been?

Yes, you're setting yourself up for a multi-PR fall season!

I think I need to try this flip belt. That looks cool. Will it work with a larger phone?
oh c'mon.  I run with one of these exercise pocket belt things and there's nothing cool about it.  I do like that it's under my shirt so I don't have to advertise my modern fanny pack.

where do you see monthly miles on Strava?

As I prepare for my race next Saturday, the best thing I can do between now and then is drop a few pounds.  Of course, I had all you can eat BBQ and whiskey last night, plus 2 concerts, 2 parties and 2 FF drafts between now and then(!)

On desktop/laptop just go to your profile.  It defaults to weekly, but there's a monthly option directly next to it.  I don't believe you can access via mobile, but maybe the iphone (if you have one) is different than the droid.

I finished my second consecutive 300 mile month this morning.  (Thank god July and August have 31 days!)

I'm at 2,102 miles for the year.  (Last year was my previous high of 2,011 miles, so this is a PR for me.)

102 miles ahead of what I need to hit 3,000 miles.  I am doing a half marathon in a couple weeks.  I'll be interested in seeing how these long slow miles, without much speed, translates into HM time.  I'd love to PR but I think it is unlikely.  I will try tho.

i did that but it comingles run and bike.  I guess I'm around 70 miles this month.

It is something I’d like to get better at. As @MAC_32 mentioned, I am never thirsty on a run, unless it is over about 14 miles. It’s not a choice, I want to drink more water, but I forget. I look at it like stretching, do we all stretch as much as we should? I would guess the answer is no. Although we are all aware it is something we should do more, we neglect it at times. I personally do not enjoy carrying something when I run. I realize you think that is crazy, but it’s just my preference.

I truly debated going out today.  Legs felt a little tired when I first woke up but that went away.  Drank a good bit before going out with my wife and little one and just had a nice leisurely run around the park.  Really humid (71 dew point again) but at least it was cloudy and only 79 degrees so I'll take it.  HR of 141 for the whole run and I feel great right now and I'm actually glad I went out.  Ready for my 2 workouts this weekend and then taking it easy.  I completely forgot my 10K is in a week so I won't be doing as much as usual next few days.

And finally used @Ned's watch.  Might take a little getting used to.  I don't know what it did with the "laps" on Strava as they are just random funky distances instead of split up by miles.  The funny thing is, as I'm putting it on and getting ready to run, it was almost as if the watch was saying "don't do this".  But I just gave it a quick slap and ignored it.

Hi, everyone:

42/M/USA

Music:  Sometimes, probably on 60% of runs.  Prefer Bluetooth
Stretching:  Only after runs and not consistently.  Do try to stretch in the shower, particularly hamstrings and some calf stuff.  No foam rolling.
Water on runs:  Yes on runs over 6 miles.  Prefer water bottles on water belt.  Learning to stop on runs to drink if need be.
Plan:  Higdon.  Because it's all I know right now.
Early morning running/night running:  Not a fan, but do own a headlamp if the urge arises.
Running in the rain:  Hate it.  I might melt and might ruin my shoes.
Shoe size:  14.  The extra size has helped tremendously.  No more black nails or toe pain.
Hot weather or cold weather:  Overall, hot weather.  But I'm ready for summer to end.
Long runs or short runs:  Short runs all day.  But getting better.
Favorite FBG quotes:  "I'm a BMF".  "The juice isn't worth the squeeze".

Ordered 12 new pairs of running socks this morning. Balega Hidden Comfort, the only ones I'll wear. When I get them, I'll throw away all my old ones. Rinse, repeat in 6 months. Ain't no better feeling than new socks...as far as running is concerned, at least. ;)

Is the idea that stretching when cold doesn't really help and that an easy warm up run loosens you up enough?
I think stretching is less important for me because I strength train - that's my isolated muscle work.  But to answer your question, yes - it's all the warm up.  Sometimes it's a minute or two, other times it's a couplefew miles - that's all I need to loosen up though.  If something's tight after then I think stretching can be effective.  I'll usually just do some lunges and be okay, but back when I had more nicks and aches and pains (knock on wood) I'd sometimes stretch a little once done.

Btw, my son is ridiculous.

Kid has to run 3x per week for soccer in addition to practices. Always a struggle to get him to do his 30 minutes. And he always does them on the treadmill at home at like a 10 minute pace and hasn't bothered to try and get faster. His personal motivation is non existent. As such, he's joining the cross country team for 8th grade since they run on his non soccer days and he can knock it out with them and hopefully have fun running with other kids.

Of course, he comes home yesterday and tells me they had to do a mile run to see how they could do and improve later in the year when you do it a second time. How do you avoid having to run it later in the year? If you can run a sub 7 minute mile.

His time yesterday: 6:58.

He must have been properly stretched and hydrated.

Sure makes my son's 9:43 I was bragging about yesterday seem.....well.....inadequate.

Thanks jerkface.

Edit to add: I'm just busting @gianmarco sack. My son unfortunately takes after his slow old man.

Didn't count if it wasn't on Strava

Killian dropped from UTMB (de facto 100 mile trail world championship) because he got stung by a bee 3 hours before the race, and he’s allergic. Still managed to run 40 miles or so before he started puking and had to drop.

Walmsley faded after running in the lead early. Zach Miller and Xavier Thevenard (dude who was DQd from Hardrock while an hour in the lead at mile 91) within a minute of each other at 111 km with Tim Tollefson chasing not far behind . No American man has ever won this race, so pretty exciting that two are in striking distance now.

I’m a few glasses of wine in, but feel like hitting the trails right now....

I assume you already follow, but if not, Jim Walmsley is on Strava. I also follow Lance Armstrong.

Any other celebs/athletes worth following?

I signed up for 2019 Ironman Mont-Tremblant.

When is the right time to tell my wife?
Merde alors!  How supportive has she been of your tri training?  Given the training commitment, this was in all likelihood a bad move on your part ...but maybe she'll be good with it.  ("A late summer weekend in Quebec?  What fun, JAA!!")  Just in case, tell her you ordered a Medium race shirt and you're going to give it to her.

Alright, just ordered a pair.  They also come with a free pair of wired headphones .  Also ordered a pair of these as they are similarly priced and reviews also seem to be excellent.  I'll compare the two and don't mind having an extra set.  If I love both, then who knows, maybe I'll end up sending them to someone who changes their avatar to one of my choosing.
Quick update:

These both just came in. They are essentially the exact same product with just different branding. Otherwise identical in shape, function, etc.

I will say putting them on they are ridiculously comfortable and I think I'm going to love them. I'll try one out tomorrow and follow up.

And the streak continues.  Tim hurt his leg early and it finally stopped him, he was helicoptered out. Zach hurt his ankle, he was helicoptered out. Walmsley dropped as well. Top American was 12th overall, I think. And Xavier Thevenard picked up his 3rd UTMB victory.

And if I ever DNF again, I want a helicopter......

Definitely appreciating the value of proper fueling and hydration.

Previously, I don't think it mattered much for me since I never ran longer distances nor did I do much in the heat.  After that difficult long run a couple weeks ago, I learned from it and had a much better run last week.  Heading into my pace run yesterday, I didn't pay as much attention to it as I should have and suffered as a result, not being able to finish the workout as planned (not to mention the heat/humidity was brutal).  So I made sure I got loads of carbs yesterday, drank plenty of water last night, got a good night's sleep, and then hydrated again this morning before heading out.

Despite this being my highest weekly total ever (37 miles for this week and 48 over the last 8 days) and finally doing the long run on the heels of a speed workout (even if only part of it), I felt wonderful this morning.  Heat/humidity still there with an SI of 150 but I got out early enough to beat the sun and was able to just run comfortably.  HR stayed below <155 for the first 6 miles and averaged 156 total for the whole run which is great for me.  Legs felt good until the end when they were getting fatigued the last mile or 2 (especially on the hills).  It's my biggest concern with this HM coming up as that 10th mile has a mile long uphill.  But I think I'm getting more comfortable with these longer distances and how to manage them.

Drank 12 oz around mile 4.5 (both 6 oz bottles and refilled them at the same time), then drank them again over the next 3 miles and that seemed to work well.  I probably could have stood to rehydrate once more towards the end as that may have led to the last couple miles feeling a bit tougher, but I otherwise felt really good for most of the run.  Since getting home, I've drank close to 30 oz of water and the MM smoothie and I'm still down 6 lbs. It's nuts.

Anyway, time to cut down this week, enjoy Vegas for a few days later this week and see how the 10K goes in 1 week.

Next long run I'm going to try some fuel with water and see how that goes.  Also going to try some Gatorade before the run as well.

Oh, and the new headphones were ultra comfortable.  The sound was a little wonky halfway as it was changing as I stepped but I think I need to try the foam eartips that came with it.  But still, really happy with them.

Nice work!

Finished off a 58-mile week with 10 miles yesterday (7:34/mile) and 9.3 this morning (7:47).  This was supposed to be a "down" week for me, but next week is hellishly busy, so I had to do some "rearranging."  The result is that my "light" week ended up being a little heavier than planned, and my "heavy" week will be a little lighter.  Either way, I'll still be doing all the planned workouts/miles over the 2-week period, so it's all good.

I leave early Thursday for a quick "in-and-out" business trip to Alabama/Florida.  Rest day scheduled for Thursday, but I've got a 5-mile recovery run scheduled for Friday morning in Destin.  Can't wait to run in the Florida humidity...    It's gonna suck (bad) getting back home after midnight on Friday night and then having to get up and do a 20-mile cutdown run on Saturday morning.

Wife signed up for her 2nd-ever half marathon on October 28, so that's cool.  This was her first week of training, and yesterday she did a solid 7-miler at 10:02/mile.  A little 3-mile recovery run this morning got her 20+ miles for the week.
