Like you said, anybody registering in the first week has nothing to worry about.  My buddy of mine has crunched all the numbers  :nerd: , and he think the cutoff will be somewhere between BQ-3:50 and BQ-4:18. For the sake of @MAC_32, I hope he's wrong...

Yeah, it's really about the experience.  The course itself kinda sucks.

1:56 might be a stretch, but the weather in Boston KILLED times this year so that will help you.  I wouldn't be surprised if the cutoff got a bit easier this year.  There are websites that predict it but they haven't been too accurate over the years.

I would plan on waiting several days before you hear.  They do it via email.  Good luck.  I'll be rooting for you to get in!

Appreciated!  And yeah I read the same about predicting the cutoff - all who have tried have not been successful.  So I've just been following weather conditions for the bigger races.  Training conditions were brutal in both winter and summer, but the weather seemed to break right race day with some frequency - myself included.  Obviously not Boston though.

I'm not expecting to get in and honestly haven't thought about it much, but I knew once registration opened that I'd start to get anxious and it'd maintain until I get the rejection notice.  But to be fair, I did set outlook reminders each Friday before bigger qualifying races to check out their race conditions.  So I probably have thought about it a lot and I'm a liar.

 
No clue how @SteelCurtain does it with all the miles.  I've got 9-10-10-12-10 the next 5 days, and it's just mentally tiring.

If Boston doesn't work out, have you considered another destination marathon for 2019?  New York, Chicago and others would be a great experience.

I'm just curious and will throw it out there once more, especially now that I've done it once.  I don't know that I'll race it again next year unless some of you might be interested.

Any interest amongst you guys to do the KT82 mile relay race that I did next June?  We would need a total of 6 and could put together an FBG team.  And of course some of our resident badasses can also come and do the ultra by themselves (i.e., @SFBayDuck and @SayWhat?) even though I think it's only 67 miles for the ultra portion.

As I'm putting in my work schedule requests for next Jan-Jun, it got me thinking about it and whether or not I should ask for that weekend off.  Anyone?

Thanks I am not sure how it is going to go, weather could be an issue with suck index around 130. I have been practicing my suffering training, on travel for work- sitting in boring meetings and I forgot my watch so I have been running on the treadmill.

I should mention, I don't think the date is fully confirmed, but it looks like it will likely be June 1st (usually very beginning of June on a Saturday). 

Logistically, it's an all day thing that starts early in the morning on Saturday in St. Louis and will end in Hermann, MO, a small little German town in the middle of wine country.  At the end, can either pass the night there or head back to StL, doesn't really matter.

And to add to the competitive fire, the winning team last year finished in 8:57:43 for a pace time of 6:34.  2nd and 3rd were 6:58 and 7:04 cumulative paces.  Each leg is anywhere from 2.5 miles to 7.5 miles.

Is your PR still from the Love Run Half Marathon in 2016?  I've forgotten.

Nope - we're planning to begin the moving process in 2019, so if I don't get into Boston then the next attempt will probably be deferred until after that's done.

I'd be interested in something like this down the line, but not for at least the next couple of years.  Especially as long as it's that weekend.  My wife works at a K-8 school, so I'm usually needed for kid duty more than usual around then.  Someday we'll be able to leave the kids home alone, but our youngest is 2 and current society says you can't leave them home unsupervised until they're at least 20 so whenever I do agree to come it's because I've decided I'm tired of them take them away child & family services.

 
Fueling stuff...  I took a leftover Roctane out on a run last weekend and then realized I needed some more fuel stuff to try.  Stumbled online upon gel by Maurten that I remembered from the ‘Breaking 2’ coverage that those guys were drinking custom Maurten blends. I ordered some so I can report/compare in a few weeks.  Anyone tried?

 
How much do you guys run while sick?

I rarely get sick but I’ve had a cold the past few days. Took Monday off, did some Googling and read that it should be safe to run with my symptoms - head cold, runny nose, etc. So I went out yesterday and did a light run, felt really good during but afterwards I was just totally drained for about 4 hours. Taking today off too in hopes of recovering fully for some longer runs this weekend.

Hydrate + sleep more, but still run anyway (at a slower pace) and take no prisoners hawking loogies all over the sidewalk is usually my approach.

We're bringing in some northerners in the beginning of June when it's going to be a bit squishy.  I think you and I would probably smoke them as a result.  I hope they don't slow US down.

I was thinking I would take a one way flight to St Louis and have my wife meet me at Herrmann. We would probably stay there overnight and just hang out.

You could think of it like Fenway ...an old park with tons of history and distinctive elements (green wall; tucked into a city neighborhood).  Living in Boston, I suppose it's easy to become blase about the ballpark, not unlike Chicagoans with Wrigley Field.  As @gruecd described, the Boston Marathon similarly has both history and distinctive elements.  (But, yeah, it's a crowded course with some tough elements - early downslopes; late hills.)  The Boston race has an aura, too, because of the need for a qualifier.  On many occasions, when someone finds out I've run marathons (gee, how does that ever come up in conversation?!), they typically will ask, "have you run Boston?"

Yeah, Hermann is a great town for that.  Took my wife there once for an anniversary and stayed, did some winery tours, and enjoyed the town.  Depending on how you guys get here, we'll have the van that I'll take back to StL (likely the following day). 

This could be pretty fun!

Cool idea. That time of year is usually tough schedule wise with school ending and graduation parties.  Plus, that distance is above my paygrade at the current time.

Remember that it's 3 separate legs.  One of the runners gets legs of 4 miles, 4 miles, and 4 miles.  You'd get 2-3 hours to recover between each.  You got this!

I’d need a few biggish life unknowns to clear to be a ‘maybe’. Will know more later this year if the 6 pack isn’t rounded out. My wife is working on a pretty significant curveball for next year that I have to be mindful of. 

 
Just an FYI, it is a lottery, but we've gotten in every year so far. Since I ran it last year, I'm pretty sure I get preference. We knew by November or December last year.
