I do understand the signing from both sides of the fence here. Giants get instant marketing as Unit chases 300 while Unit gets to stay in his hometown area, I get it.I just wonder how much Centrum Silver is going to be needed in that clubhouse.
A relative bargain for the Giants - its a one year deal and doesn't pay him a lot - IF the incentives kick in he will be pitching well enough to win some games for them - will add customers as Twilight said - especially if he wins #300 in SF.
Johnson won't get much run support from that team, but the park will favor him - hard to hit HR there and he has become more of a flyball pitcher these days.
It might also allow them (sorry if they are personal favorites) to trade either Cain or Sanchez if they could get a good enough bat for them........they do have some good young arms in the farm system who will be ready soon. If they don't trade a pitcher they will have one of the best rotations in a weak division and will thus be more competitive in 2009

Great signing I think for the short term. I'm Sabean won't trade away pitching unless he get what he wants. Sabean's said he'll need a young power-hitting corner infielder to trade Cain/Sanchez, but I doubt any of those are on the market, and settling for less is a bad idea IMO. Trading a pitcher to get any less of a hitter might make them better this year, but 2010+ when they're likely to compete will be less likely I think. By then their rotation could beLincecumCain or SanchezZitoLowryPucetesMadbumAldersonThat doesn't look like a contending rotation to me. Cain and Sanchez are good and could be great, but I think they'll top out at as 3 starters. Zito sucks. Who know about Lowry. While Madbum and Alderson had great years, they were in A ball, let's give them a year at AA or higher before we trade away major league talent.Hold on to these guys this year, let Cain/Sanchez settle out some, see what you have with Pucetes/Madbum/Alderson after a year at harder competition, and see how Lowry comes back. Then you'll be dealing with more knowledge about what you have going forward in a year you're able to compete and can use that knowledge to trade or sign for weaknesses within the offense.
Surprised the Dodgers did not make a better offer. 9/mill one year offer would make sense for them. Plus Unit goes to a team with better postseason chances. Dodgers ain't going to spend anything this offseason.
