Ranking Led Zeppelin Songs - Request To Participate (1 Viewer)

Interesting that I grew up listening (well I was in college already) to Zeppelin via CDs in the 2 box sets. Listening now on Spotify and the songs are sticking out as just a little different with I guess different remastering things. I don't remember a hiss at the beginning of Immigrant Song for example but goggle says that's OG. Weird.

Is "No Quarter, Unledded" eligible for inclusion? I love the acoustic Gallows Pole more than the original.
Is that a live album?

There were also some later Plant/Page albums I believe that I tried to get into. That Black Crows/Page live album was strong though I thought.

Man this all seems so long ago, are we….old?!?😂

@Anarchy99Fair enough!

Yes, it was a live album of Page and Plant. It was on MTV back in the day.

To anyone having trouble ranking, go to the link below.  You have to sign up, which takes 1 minute, but you can then input every song you think you'd want in your top 25, and then the site pits every song against one another in 1 on 1 matches. You pick your favorite of each matchup and then at the end it tells you your ranking. Good stuff.

Definitely always there.  The first part of the song sounds like it was recorded on AM radio.

Were people serious when they said to count Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid as one song? I am cool either way, just wondering

It wasn’t initially, but they added it in 2008.
Pretty sure 1993 CD-version actually. 2008 was a remix release I think.

That kind of stuff sometimes feels like a marketing ploy. I'm not a fan, but I'm a bit of a purist.

Coda seems to have been maybe the best way to satisfy a contract requirement post-Bonham.
"Hey Hey What Can I Do" was included as a bonus track as part of the 10-disc "Complete Studio Recordings" box from 1993, but it was NOT included on the subsequent standalone re-issues of "Coda".

The song was also part of the 2015 deluxe edition of "Coda", as part of the bonus disc containing various remixes and rarities.

I view it as a B Side myself, just like Traveling Riverside Blues.

Perfect, then I think I have my top 25 and now I just need to sort it out.
I haven't quite finished my rankings but am close but it's going to be hard to keep a 2 for 1 off the list. You get 2 Zeppelin songs for the ranking of one. Hard to leave that off the list.

Was looking over the spreadsheet and found that FIVE TIMES so far someone submitted a list where their top song was not on the next list to come in at all.

Still waiting on lists from a bunch of people . . . and hoping to attract some more people to participate.

Gotta set a hard deadline to put some pressure on folks.

Identifying the first 23 was relatively easy. Ordering 16-23 was not. Neither was 3-11. And I spent more time than I care to admit thinking about 25. Ultimately, it was a choice between 4 songs from graffiti or 3 songs from II...and the former won out:

I - 4

II - 2

III - 4

IV - 5

Houses - 3

Graffiti - 4

No Coda - 2

Getting some ballots in lately. Hopefully we can get 40+ peeps to submit. Not many newbies have climbed aboard though. The more the merrier.

How are the mass ballots affecting the overall rankings? Are they more generic? Do the totally out of kilter rankings affect the overall much?
The odd toss in songs that aren't on many lists pretty much go to the bottom of the total rankings as they don't have enough total points to really make a dent. But things can certainly change with a bunch of similar lists. For example, there was a surprise song (at least to me) that was overall ranked right around the Top 5 for a long time. Then 5 lists came in and that song was left off all of them, so that song has fallen out of the Top 10.

No song has been on every list. Of the current Top 10 songs, here are how many lists did not have those songs: 2, 4, 3, 8, 7, 7, 6, 5, 6, 12. So the current #10 song was not included on 12 lists. The current #5 song had a total of 1 point after the first 5 lists were submitted. That just shows how varied the lists can be.

If all the people carry through on submitting lists as they indicated they would, approximately half the lists have been tabulated so far. A lot could change by the time we are done.

Why don't you take a stab at it? There must be 25 LZ songs you like.

Not really. I only have a double CD compilation that i maybe listened to twice. I could probably get to 10, but it’s just not in my musical taste. Gets boring and repetitive quickly. Same with AC/DC. I love the passion of people who really get into them, but needs more synth and electronica lol

I am much more interested in the maths and numbers side of this exercise lol.

I'm curious - not that we could ever determine for sure - how songs rank based on age.  The guys my age and older who grew up listening to it versus those that came along later.

Out of my purview in terms of screening questions. LOL. I have no idea how old anyone is. In my case, I came along right at the tail end of the band. So I missed all the good years and then doubled back to get into them. But there was a good 10 years from when the band broke up that FM radio was FLOODED with Zeppelin. From what I remember, they were played more than when they were still together. There was even an FM station in Florida I think that went to an all LZ format. Crazy times.

Not sure where that puts me, as I grew up listening to them . . . but they were already out of the picture and not releasing any new material. IMO, I'm a lot different than a kid today that would have to go exploring to get into them. They are still popular, but not like they used to be.

I'm not submitting a list because I'm either too lazy or too busy (and I'm too lazy or too busy to know which one it is), but.....

I was born in 1962 and Zep's early stuff wouldn't have much been on my radar as a young kid, if I were left to my own devices (AM Radio). But I had a hippie aunt nine years older than me who used to baby-sit when my parents would go out, and who had a profound affect on my pop-culture growth. She listened to free-form channels, which were really the only outlet for the Woodstock-era artists before the rise of AOR (unless they had an AM hit). So, I heard a ton of LZ (which took) and the Dead (which didn't).

If I were submitting a ranking, it would - like most - lean early, but I liked Presence and ITTOD better than many die-hards and would have at least a couple of songs in my Top 25 from each. I was a teenager when those 2 LPs came out and they hit hard.

My aunt also took me to a double-feature of one of the Herbie The Love Bug movies and Blazing Saddles when I was 12 :loco:

I think you could probably make yourself available to make a list. You certainly are qualified. Laziness and busyness seem like excuses to me. You have a minimum of 2 more weeks to work on one. Pretty sure you could work within that window.

If I'm able to run the gauntlet I have the next 7 days, we'll see. I'll need to marathon their albums. Some of the song titles on the written page still confound me after 50 years of listening, so I can't shoot from the hip like I can with most artists (Beatles, Barry Manilow, all the other giants) by just looking at the name of the song.

First of all a big thanks to @Anarchy99for doing this. I've been jamming out to a whole bunch of Zeppelin over the last few weeks. It's been a blast making my rankings.

I don't know but I assume that my rankings will be quite a bit different than the average but we'll see. Oh and I was born in 1970.

I don't hate Hot Dog as much as most. Not in my top 25 but could possibly squeeze in my top 75 or so. My least liked Zeppelin song is probably "Down By the Seaside". I just can't.

Here's my breakdown :

I      6

II     5

III    3

IV    2

HH   3

PG    1

Presence. 2

The Song Remains the Same   0

In Through the Outdoor    2

Coda       1        I think

First 5 out(in no particular order) :

Friends

Fool in the Rain

The Lemon Song

Ten Years Gone

The Rain Song

That's it. Can't wait for the end results.

I just wanted to point out that in the boxed set, Heartbreaker leads directly into Communication Breakdown.
Technically and logically, Heartbreaker and LLM should be two songs, but since I didn't specify and some folks sent me lists with them combined, I just let them count as one song. Having enough trouble getting folks to submit lists, not going to chase them to have to send me an updated list. It won't make that much difference in the long run.

Hopefully everyone had a good Christmas and now has time to finish up their lists. If I know some of you, you are just starting to sober up from all the partying. Hopefully we can land a few more recruits while we wait on the lists to be completed and submitted.

Late to the party here, when is the last possible day to submit?  I've been a fan since the 70s and had every album on vinyl until my mom decided to sell my entire recorded collection at a garage sale shortly after I got married 30+ years ago.  I've recollected almost all back on vinyl and think it'd be fun over this weekend to build my list while listening.  Would a later Sunday PM work?
