Raspberry Pi 3 - $35 computer (1 Viewer)

if i want to torrent movies/shows etc how do you downlaod and view on a raspberry pi?  Kodi and store content on a usb external hard drive?
With Kodi, you stream movies and shows, you don't download and view them.  While that doesn't make the practice 100% legal, it does make it "more legal" than downloading.

Whoever has what you're looking for available.  This isn't like netflix or Amazon Video.....
This is all going to be a new world to me. I ordered the starter kit for $75 on amazon plus a snes controller. I have a spare wired usb keyboard, a wireless usb mouse, a ps3 and an ethernet connection at my tv.

It was all new to me up until about 6 months ago.  I still haven't done the retropie stuff (retro gaming), but I love using my pi for Kodi related stuff.  Once you get Kodi installed (you can find tutorials around all over) install the Titanium build (you can find youtube tutorials for this as well).  With it, you can find nearly anything you want to watch/stream including movies, TV shows, even sporting events (though those aren't as reliable as the TV shows or movies).

And kodi and retropi can co-exist, correct?

Unsure.  Worst case you have separate memory cards for each (likely how I'll do it myself).  This way when someone goes wrong or needs to be updated with one, it won't mess with my ability to use the other.  With Kodi and it's updates and such, I've been doing a "clean refresh" every 2-3 months - only takes 10 minutes or so once you get the hang of it.

And store roms on an external drive?

i saw a dual boot of retropie and kodi on YouTube earlier today and it looked sweet. Maybe instructions were in comments?

I find it hard to believe it's not possible to store Retropie or Kodi plus whatever roms you want on a single 32gb card or even a 16.

Will i need additional sd cards?  A separate usb external hard drive?  I never have been a torrent guy, but is this a good means of doing so?  How?

Am i going to get addicted and need more than one?

should i be asking google or another forum these questions?

Where do you stream from?
You need to stream from another device as Pi does not have the horsepower to render video; that needs to happen somewhere else. Run Plex on a desktop computer IMO.

FYI, no Netflix on Pi either which really sucks.

No, you don't need to dual boot. Install Retropie, then install Kodi. Can link some guides if you need. I have it set to boot right into Kodi. To get to Retropie, I just exit Kodi. To get back into Kodi, reboot.

Good stuff!!

I thought kodi was for streaming?

Yes, you can stream with Kodi. Worded that wrong. I don't think you can store media on the Pi and play it if you torrent stuff.
I never used a torrent. I assume you could use an external hard drive?

but the kodi streaming available is pre-released movies etc as well, no?

Yes/no for external HD. Depending on the type of video it is and how it is encoded. 1080p h265 is not supported by the hardware so you'll have big time heat issues and very poor display. Anything less and you should be fine. But you'll still need to be downloading to your external drive from somewhere else (well, you can do it from the Pi if you're good with Linux) then move the drive to your Pi. Instead of doing all that, store the video where ever you're downloading and run Plex. Plex is incredibly simple to setup and use.

Yes. Kodi works great for any new movies (and pre-release) or TV. Hit and miss for older or obscure stuff.

If you're doing Retropie, you'll have to torrent the Roms (roms are the games)... at least I've never found any outside of torrents. I can PM you some links once you're at that point.

I cannot freaking register on the Retropie forums.

There is a spambot question and it says to choose the answer from a list. But there is no list???  I have tried on safari, firefox, edge, and chrome. Wtf?

Are you talking about this one :https://retropie.org.uk/forum/

If so, I just went there with Firefox and had no "choose answer from list".. just got a place to select "I am not a robot" and my registration went through without issues

I meant raspberrypi.org. My bad.
 tricky UK people.... they want you to choose one of the words listed behind the question "What is a raspberry pi" ...    ComputerFootballerCarBook

So I typed in Computer and I registered just fine .

I typed that whole thing in like 321 times

I have not set this up yet, but this link seems to be what I am going for.  You have the Raspbian OS, RetroPi, and Kodi:

https://retroresolution.com/2016/03/31/multipurpose-raspberry-pi-installing-a-media-gaming-pc-replacement/#li_install_raspbian

My kit came with a 32GB SD card with NOOBS pre-loaded.  For some reason, the link above specifically states that the version of Raspbian he is using is NOT the NOOBS version.  Why would that be?

I am thinking I will install Raspbian via NOOBS and the instructions that came with my kit, and then following the link above to set up RetroPi and Kodi.

Thoughts?  I don't want to brick this thing.

Man, that seems like a lot of work and time that I just don't seem to have right now..

My original plan to get the pi3 with just Retropie & controllers failed as my wife wanted to make other purchases on Amazon and by the time she went to order there were no pi3 with just retropie and the controllers available...

So we ended up going with pi3 with Retropie, Kodi and controllers

Will have to re-purpose the Roku3 now for another room but, in theory, all I need to do is get the ROM's we want added to a USB drive and Christmas morning get to playing :excited:

Think this is too much to pull off?

Am I going to #### this up?

It appears getting roms isnt super simple either, unless the video I watched was overkill. Need to use a usb stick and do some command codes etc.

It's easy guys. Maybe a dozen commands to run and it's working.

Easiest way for Roms is through SFTP from another computer. No USB needed.

here is a link to the video I saved ..

It goes through the installation of RetroPie and adding ROM's, so I just linked to the start of adding ROM's which, IMO, seems pretty easy :oldunsure:

Hmm, I might have to look into this more. Don't want to overheat the little guy. I just like that Kodi can play MKV files, while my PS3 can't, so I was hoping to use it to play downloaded movies over the ethernet connection.

I couldn't make Plex work with my system, so I've completely given up on that as an option. 100% no-go.
Plex with what system? Your NAS or Kodi?

Yeah, somewhere in the middle it all went screwy. Gave up on it and not really interested in trying again. From what I remember, at some point I looked up the error I was getting on the Plex site and got the answer "it just won't work".
The only advantage of it is that it makes your library look pretty by downloading all the synopsis and cover art. Meshes nicely with the Kodi Amber skin.

I think I'm happy just browsing my folders on the NAS. I keep them pretty organized by genre on there already. But if there's really a risk overheating with 1080 videos, then I'll need another solution for MKV files, which are distressingly becoming more common.
That's the other advantage of some like Plex or PS3 media server. It does the transcoding so your Pi doesn't have to.

No, you don't need to dual boot. Install Retropie, then install Kodi. Can link some guides if you need. I have it set to boot right into Kodi. To get to Retropie, I just exit Kodi. To get back into Kodi, reboot.
And by reboot, you mean unplug it and plug it back in, right?

I haven't tried retropie (yet).  I mean in Kodi, I can't find a way to have it "reboot".  I can exit kodi, but then it's just a blank screen.
There should be an exit option. Will depend on what skin you're using. Will fire it up later to get the exact spot.

I'm using whatever skin is the standard with the "titanium build" mentioned earlier here.  What I'll likely do is just use another sd card for any retropie type stuff, though.
