I'm a relative novice at fantasy BB, so any input is appreciated. This is an 8-team live-draft H2H AL/NL league, so there are a lot of "all-star" teams.. so this team isn't as good relative to the competition as it might appear at a glance. Standard 5x5 scoring, start C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, IF, OF, OF, OF, UTIL, 5 SP, 2 RP

C - Joe Mauer

1B - Paul Konerko

2B - Martin Prado

SS - Troy Tulowitski

3B - Michael Young

IF - Billy Nutler / Derrek Lee

OF - Jason Heyward

OF - Shin-Soo Choo

OF - Jayson Werth

Util - Delmon Young, Mike Stanton, Rajai Davis

SP - Roy Halladay

SP - Tim Lincecum

SP - David Price

SP - Clay Buchholz

SP - Tim Hudson

Backups - Hiroki Kuroda, Jeremy Hellickson

RP - J.J. Putz

RP - Matt Thornton

Backup - Andrew Bailey (DL)

I like your team, but then I've never played on a 8 team league before.

Your initial positions are good across the board, but I think you are week at IF. Billy Butler won't provide much and Derek Lee probably isn't anything special in an 8 team league.

You might struggle in saves, but that is a position easy enough to address during the season. Your starting pitching is good.

Just realized I wrote Nutler. Uh huh huh huh.

I recognize that I'm weak in the IF - after taking Tulo at #5, I spent two of my next 3 picks on SPs (that's where the value fell) followed by Mauer, Choo, and Price. So, still needing a 1B, 2B, 3B, and IF after 7 rounds, the pickins were slim.

Top undrafted/currently available infielders :

Pedro Alvarez (Pit - 3B)

Ian Desmond (Was - SS)

Gordon Beckham (CWS - 2B)

Starlin Castro (CHC - SS)

Would you pick one or more of these guys up and dump Butler and/or Lee?

Your team is looking not so good, EG.

Alvarez might be better than Michael Young.

Your middle infield is fine; you just need (big) help at the corners.

Adam LaRoche, Ike Davis, Scott Rolen. Chipper Jones are CIs that are available. Also, Bourn and Pierre are out there, I could almost monopolize SBs with Rajai on my team already.

Chipper > DLeeAnd if Chipper breaks down in the middle of the season, which is entirely possibly, you could pick back up DLee or Ike. But you need more than WW help. You need one of the true sluggers at the corners to prevent you from losing too much ground to everyone else.

Corners? You think Konerko is due for a major fall from last years' #s? I know 3B is very weak, but I purposely waited at 1B because there are so many guys at that position with pop. Last year, I wasted my 1st rounder on Prince Fielder and suffered for it all year long. I figured taking a 1B in round 1 (aside from Pujols) was akin to taking a QB in round 1.I can dump LaRoche (or Bailey or someone else) and pick up Chipper. Chipper is my favorite player of all time, so perhaps I'm trying too hard NOT to make a homer pick, but LaRoche had 20+ HR and 100 RBI last year and Chipper is old and brittle. He IS still capable of hitting over .300 if he stays healthy, though.

Brittle players aren't much of a problem in an 8-team league. The top WW player will have enough replacement value that your guy breaking down will be a big deal. This is especially true when you're taking the brittle guy himself off of the WW so it's like you're risking a 5th-round pick or anything.Your 1B/QB analogy would work if you could draft QBs into two different offensive flex positions which is what you have with your IF and UTIL spots. But you don't have the 8th-best 1B. You have maybe the 20th-best or something.

I can pick Chipper up, but will have to drop LaRoche to accommodate him, so that would exhaust my pickups for the week. You're really down on Konerko, huh? I saw him as a great value pick, yes, he's 35, but his #s last year were tremendous - if he does 80% of that this year, that's still 30+ HR and 90 RBI with a .300 average. You think he's going to drop off a cliff this season? You've got me nervous now.

I don't know what I would project Konerko at but I wouldn't trust him to fill an important role. The line I use for this in my league is, "But Carlos Delgado hit 38 HRs last year!!!" which is what a guy in my league said after I mocked him for spending $12 (mid-level pick) on him in 2009. His 2009 was not his 2008.

Is Alvarez still out there? I like him way better than Chipper or LaRoche.

Yeah, I don't expect a repeat of last year, but if he can hit near .300 with 25-30 HR and near 100 RBIs, which would be well off last year's #s, he still would represent value where I got him. I'm beginning to wonder if I should ahve waited on SP and picked up corner infielders in the early rounds. Thanks for all the input, matthias, it's much appreciated.

Added Alvarez and dropped LaRoche. Good having you on the squad, Adam.
Good move. The thing about small leagues like this is, I think you have to gamble on some of the high upside plays like Alvarez at the start of the season. You can always find a LaRoche/Chipper type player on the WW throughout the season if needed because of the depth available.
