I have my doubts about just how prevalent this reported "trend" is, but it may be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard:

It's honestly downright insulting to both civilization and those that live in poverty and don't have access to clean water to intentionally pay for and drink unfiltered untreated water that could very well make you sick and even kill you.
